i had to return my 2nd 4s today due to 2 dead pixels. at first i was thinking of just dealing with the dead pixels cause with the retina display they were very very small, but im glad i did return it...the new phone's battery is 100% better obviously there is something going on out there and hopefully its addressed.

Did a full charge cycle (drained to 0 then charged till 100) took the phone off charge at 3.30 am battery was 100% until 7am after a bit of light usage with safari, i'm down to 81% this is ridiculous!! some how it managed to rack up 24 minutes of usage whilst i was sleeping :S

the battery drops to about 30% after my kid was playing with Siri for about an hour... really need a backup battery

Does anyone wonder if this is just simply the apps we are using aren't designed with the 4s internals in mind, as i'm now noticing more and more updates with 'bug fixes'???

Did you reboot the phone? It never shows usage data after rebooting until you charge it again.

I didn't know that. As a matter of fact, I rebooted right after removing from the charger. This morning, at 7:09am, I'm at 40%. I've never had an iPhone battery last this long on a single charge,

I received my 4S on launch day from Apple. The battery life was bad. Much like described in the forums. I noticed the usage would be higher than my actual usage. After using is a while it would show 10% battery life after it claimed to have had usage of 3 and a half hours.

I took it into the Apple Store and describe what was going on. The guy immediately said it sounds like your battery firmware was corrupt and reinstalled the firmware. He said the corrupt firmware makes the phone think the battery is fully charged but it is not.

When I got home I restored the data on the phone and got it back to 100% charge. It lasted for the rest of the day with no problems at all. 5+ hours of usage.

It seems like that fixed the problem.

I just did my first semi-controlled test of battery life compared to my old iPhone 4.

With the 4, I took daily walks for 2 hours, using RunKeeper to track my course and time by GPS. I always cleared the multifunction tray, turned off wifi, and turned screen brightness full on, with auto brightness off. During the walks I would occasionally respond to texts, or check email, but only once or twice.

On the 4, I would return home with 78-81% battery according to the indicator.

I just did the same thing with the 4S, and had 74% charge. There is a definite difference, but not much. I'll keep checking throughout the week to see what deviation I experience.

I was on a 100 mile bike ride last month with my iPhone 4 using cyclemeter to track my performance and distance. During this time, I also streamed Sirius XM Radio for about 25 miles of the ride. My phone lasted 6hrs and had a percent or two available left.

This month I went on another 100 mile bike ride with the 4s using cyclemeter and I had one or two percent left after 6hrs 20mins. I also streamed but this time used Pandora for about 20 miles of the ride.

Not scientific but all in all, I think I got similar usage.

With this said, for some reason may day-to-day use seems to be less with the 4s......

On the 'Time since last charge' My Usage and Standby measurements are exactly the same?! Disconnected my phone from the charger at 7am and its on 47% at the minute

And like i said useage and standby are both at 5 hrs 54 mins.

Thats a bit weird?! Might back up and restore my phone tonight and see if that does anything. Tried the whole discharge and recharge thing

That usually means there is an app that has crashed or is crashing causing your phone to think it is still running. You may have a faulty app. When you restore, setup as a new phone, DO NOT restore from backup. You will just be putting the same faulty app back on. Download your apps again from the app store. Should fix your problem.

When that happens to me I usually close all my apps in the recently used apps and the usage time will stop increasing constantly. Sometimes I try to narrow it down to find out exactly which app is causing the problem.

Also, for people seeing that issue with usage and standby times mirroring eachother, doing a hard reset wont correct it. You need to actually turn the phone off for a min or so then turn it back on. Doing this allows the phone to correct itself. Doing a hard reset doesnt close and open or "stuck" apps that are running.

Took about a week but now my phone lasts at least as long as my iPhone 4 does...

I think it may have something to do with wi-fi. I'm primarily on wi-fi at home and it seems like I really burn through the battery while using apps and browsing the internet. I've noticed the phone is on 3G when I wake it from standby and then picks up wi-fi. It this normal?

iCloud and wi-fi sync is off.

My Verizon signal can be spotty at home as well. Fluctuates between 2 and 5 bars quite a bit.

So far at work on 3G with solid 4/5 bars, I'm at 1 hour of standby and 3 min of usage. Battery is still at 100%.

update

Update: I think usage is getting better.

Note, it stays on 1% a LONG time, I would say about three hours in this last case, i kept sending and receiving emails.

so I kept track my overnight progress being on standby...

10:08pm 58% 3 hours 21 minutes
7:00am 54% 3 hours 27 minutes

Battery Getting better

My batter sucked but seems to be getting better with charge cycles so hang in there. Hopefully you'll see improvement.

usage/standby the same

i had this same issue for the first time over the last day. My battery has been working fine but I noticed it was draining without much use on my part so I checked. Closing the apps didn't help so I turned it off for a minute. That stopped whatever had been running and crashed or couldn't stop...so now my usage and standby figures are different. Even with this issue, I'm at:
Usage: 20 hrs, 49 min
Standby: 22 hrs, 48 min
battery remaining: 28%

can't complain :)

I think my battery is getting better...still not as good as my ip4 was though...

One thing I noticed is it drops pretty quick from 100% down to 70% but seems to drop less frequently after 60%

I'm guessing they didn't have email/calendar accounts or applications with push notifications (i.e. Facebook) installed on their test model. If so, they probably would have seen significantly worse battery life just like most of us are experiencing.

Tough to say since there are also plenty of people with all this stuff turned on who don't experience any battery issues. I have an Exchange push account, all of iCloud and notifications and location services turned on, wifi & bluetooth always on, and see similar battery life as I did on my 4S. Not saying the problems people are experiencing aren't real, only that the source of elusive since there's a wide variety of experiences.

Can't speak to facebook though, I have it installed but rarely use it.

After a few tweaks my battery seems pretty good. I just turned off location data in apps that don't really need it, turned off ping in restrictions, and turned off sending diagnostics/crash reports to Apple. Right now I'm at 8 hours 15 min usage, 1 day 4 hours standby and the battery is at 30%. Usage has been mixed between web surfing at home on the couch and listening to music at work.

I was getting decent battery life before making these tweaks, but they definitely seem to have helped. I've also ran my battery down to 0 on most nights during the first week of owenership. Killing the battery on purpose in most cases so I can do a full charge overnight.

I'm convinced I should go to the apple store to replace my phone. This is quite simply horrid.

edit: It was 100% at 8am-sh. Only skype is kept open in the background. The usage consists mainly of reading tweets, a tiny bit of browsing, and 10-15 minutes of gaming. a 2D game.

My current breakdown after another full charge and discharge is:

Usage: 4 hours 38 minutes

Standby: 1 day 23 hours

This is with everything on but iCloud.
