It's funny but I'm noticing that people who upgrade from the 3GS claim that the battery life on their new iPhone 4S is fine. While people who upgrade from the iPhone 4 claim that their battery life is draining too quickly.

I think perception is playing too heavily in this debate.

My 4S has gone from 100% to 7% with just 2:30 hours of usage! And fairly light usage at that!! Only Internet browsing over (mostly) GPRS. And some FB/twitter etc..
Also standby drain is awful. I left it overnight and it lost 15%! The phone also gets really, really hot when being used for basic things... I hope 5.0.1 is imminent...

On my THIRD 4S already

- Got iPhone 4S

- Did not sync with iTunes as backup (set up as brand new right on the phone)

- Location services 'off'

- Ping 'off'

- Brightness '50%'

- Auto brightness 'off'

- Weather / Stocks notification 'off'

- iCloud 'off'

- Ran down battery to 0 and charged back up to 100% overnight

Then I went ahead and browsed the web on 3G (nothing else) to see how long it would take to go from 100% to 1%...

3 hours 57 minutes :(
(Should be 6 according to apple)

I have similar results with WiFi browsing as well (only getting 2/3rds of what I should)...

You're holding it wrong.

lol, I'm sorry, but can you provide a bit more information such as maybe a screenshot of your logs.

that's good...I lost about 4% overnight on stanby...did you do anything special? did you turn anything off?

Damn i guess im lucky since i have no battery problems. I charged my phone up to 100% lastnight and took my phone off the charger after the World Series so around midnight. Did some internet browsing maybe 15 mins and went to sleep, woke up around 730 and my battery was at 98%. My 4s batterylife compared to my 3GS is WAYYYY better.

Sure thing you mean screenshots of my usage statistics right? I'll be happy to once in at a computer :)

Or does logs mean something else?

Settings -> General -> About -> Diagnostics & Usage -> Diagnostic & Usage Data -> Screenshot

FWIW, my 3GS battery life was better than my 4S.

Then again I had a lot of crap enabled... going to disable near everything and see what happens :)

I remember the 3GS clearly and I had to keep a charger at my desk at work. The iPhone 4S drains faster than the iPhone 4 but I don't have to do this. I would consider other options because your phone wasn't designed to have to disable everything and get similar battery life. Thats like taking the "i" out of iPhone.

Yesterday I got so fed up and restored my 4S and setup as new (previously I had restored my iPhone 4 backup). And the battery is exactly the same - terrible. I'm still convinced that Exchange is the issue.

** 12 Hours of standby, and still holding @ 96%!!

I commented a long time ago in this thread about my battery draining at 10% every 3 hours. Well, long story short my 4S died, and I returned it to AT&T for a new one. The new one was just received yesterday and I set up as NEW (no restore) and only set up my email, and one or two apps (RSS readers). I used it pretty heavily setting it up and email the first day, received it around 11 AM with 75% battery and by night time it died. I gave it a full nights charge.

Now I have had the phone off the charger for almost 12 hours and am still at 96% battery. Granted, I've not used the phone for one second (I'm testing the standby time with only my email accounts configured (Exchange, Exchange-Gmail and POP)). I plan to not use the phone at all to see how long it will last just on standby, but assuming even if the phone was at 90% after 12 hours of standby that is great.

I'm going to add back in bluetooth and other settings, and eventually do an iCloud restore to allow and see how that affects it, but so far I like what I see. Originally I restored from iTunes from a 4, and I don't plan on doing that again.

Just checked my log and have HEAPS of low memory hits.

Haven't noticed terrible drainage, but it does seem faster than it should be.

Have a 64GB 4S about half full, so not sure why I'm getting low memory logs??

51% 3 hours 35 minutes of usage. mostly ipod for bout 1:45, medium use on facebook, texting

Alrighty, finally got some battery life I can live with. I (i) reset network settings, (ii) ran two consecutive full charge cycles, (iii) disabled notifications for everything I don't regularly use (which isn't much); and (iv) disabled Location Services for Time Zone Adjustment, iAds, and Diagnostics & Usage Reports.

Other than that, brightness at 80%-ish and pretty much everything else fully on, including bluetooth, wi-fi (incl. wi-fi sync), dozens of app-specific network services, about a dozen notifications (including mail), an Exchange Account with everything on including push, an IMAP account with everything on including push, and iCloud with everything on including push (except iCloud backup).

Had a Genius appt today and they said the diagnostics came back with a faulty battery. The phone would also randomly reset itself as well. Tried the restore to new phone, adjusted all the settings, etc, battery could barely make it 12 hours. Had the phone since launch day. The straw that broke the camel's back- I had it fully charged last night at 99% before going to sleep around midnight, and woke up this morning at 8a to it being at 74%. 8 minutes of usage and 9 hrs standby!

Apple's customer service was awesome, I was in and out of there with a new phone within 20 mins. They even gave me a free screen protector since I had one on both the front and back. First iPhone, and while it's been some ups and downs this past week, today made me really happy with Apple.

Hoping this new phone's battery is better.

Quick update. I'm only on the 2nd full charge of the phone, but this battery is working out much better. This is with about 40 mins of gps/maps, some FB & Twitter, plenty of texting/email, wifi off, bluetooth on, and about 2 hrs of voice use. Exchange is push, Yahoo is fetch, iCloud is manual. Conclusion for me- defective battery/device. I essentially have this phone set up the same way as my last, so I can't blame any particular settings on the last phone. Not sure if it makes a difference, but my last phone was DNP, this one is C38.

If you are having issues, I suggest making a Genius appt.

Okay so I did another full drain and recharge and erased and restored as a new phone (which I'd done to begin with) and I'm seeing zero improvement. I'm down to 94% after 48 minutes of light WiFi usage which has mostly just been setting up bookmarks in Safari to 5 sites I read, including this one. 3G and Bluetooth are off. I have push on for email and facebook since my 4 year old blackberry can do that with no problems and location services on for Lookout (an alternative to Find My Iphone). iCloud is off. Siri is off. All my apps are closed and I close them immediately upon finishing with them even if I'm in the middle of a text conversation. So, what's the glitch? Is this iO5 or is my battery defective? I even took the phone out of its case thinking maybe it was overheating or something, but it's not really warm. I have not even used iTunes and have no songs in there and nothing to sync. And I'm already down to 93%...

I charge my 4S all night and am at 100% in the morning. By 12 noon I am at or below 50% and I cannot make through an entire work day without charging.

6% for 48 minutes of wifi usage is damn good providing you were actually using the phone with the screen unlocked. At that rate, you'd get 13 hours of usage before your battery died. Not really sure what you're expecting or complaining about.

Yes, there are battery issues in iOS 5, but people's expectations seem a bit off as well.

Completely die. Then a full charge, uninterrupted.

Uninterrupted. That means no notifications as if I was to get a text notification?

I haven't turned the phone off since I got it so when I dies and I plug it into the charger will it automatically turn itslelf on?

Uninterrupted as in don't unplug it until the phone is at 100% with the "plug" icon. You can still use the phone while recharging it.

It doesn't flow consistently. I'll buy you a vacation to your island of choice if I can get 7:30 hrs of usage and be at 50%.

I'm at 88% right now with supposedly 1 hour 30 minutes of usage and even more laughably 2 hours 11 minutes of standby. The internal clock or whatever is calibrating time is doing it wrong! Or this device does not exist in our time plane.

I believe low memory logs have to do with the RAM.....
