I thought about the reception, but it looks like I'm getting a 4/5 bars from ATT.

It is what it is...initially I thought the refresh to factory solved my issue with 100% for about 4 hours or more...and then it started creeping down on standby... at my rate, I won't get the Apple advertised standby battery life, but oh well... I'll get a replacement for a new phone after a year from now :)

I did a refresh back to factory settings and i'm getting 8 hours of usage (maps, browsing on wifi and 3G, no music). I think the 1% every 2 hours may be due to reception issues...i live in a strong AT&T area so I bet my phone is working less hard than yours to keep the signal.

yes, but I have restrictions in general already off, or not activated so there is nothing to turn off, like ping.

That's not how it works. If Restrictions is disabled then everything under that setting is ON. You have to enable restrictions in order to disable PING, otherwise it is on.

OK, got back from the Apple store with my new phone.

It has a C39 Serial #. The battery came out with a 68% charge from the box.

I've fiddled with a few settings over the course of about 15 minutes, and sent/received a dozen texts or so and the battery is now at 59%.

This isn't a good indicator yet obviously as it has to charge/recharge at least a few times before I can tell what the true life might be.

I'm not downloading any apps whatsoever until then though, the only thing i've enabled is my Gmail (Fetch every 15 minutes).

Will keep you guys updated.

My battery only gets about 5 hours usage but im pretty much continuously on it so is that good or bad?

Is today, the 28th, the last day I can exchange it(if I got it the 14th) if I have a faulty battery? or is it covered by the warranty and i can take it in whenever? I feel like this battery life is just a little better then my evo. I dont know if its faulty or not and its my first iphone. I usually surf the web a lot, text, and play a little bit of games because its my first iphone im on it a lot playing around with it. It seems to drop about 1% a hour in standby.

So the main question is, is today my last day to swap it out or can I wait cause its covered by warranty?

Should I take mine in from the above quoted stats.

5 hours is the going average before Apple releases some tweaks.

so your saying that I shouldnt take it in and just wait for a software update? btw I dont use it for music or anything which I know doesn't eat up any battery and usage would be higher. This was just with web browsing, texting, email, and running a few apps just to play with my phone. Last night I got 5 hours playing words with friends and this other game mostly on WiFi and dropped 10% overnight in 8 hours standby.

My original appt. was made over the phone so I could see someone at the genius bar. Can't hurt to call and see if anybody cancelled?

Today I just went in, checked in and then waited like 30 seconds for the check-in guy to grab my phone and give me the new one.

Guess this will do....

Calibrating now

I now regularly seem to be getting 6 hours usage with 2 days standby on my 4S. I have done about 5 full discharges now and have everything on apart from all the Location System Services and Bluetooth. My battery life was shocking the first few days, so I'm pleased with how it is right now. My iPhone 4 was definitely better though.

5 hours is the going average before Apple releases some tweaks.

I don't know if I should feel relieved then that my 4S is getting "average" battery life, or upset knowing that it is apparently a very *real* issue of too much battery drain.

I shouldn't have to :
- disable Ping (does this even work?)
- attempt multiple restores (I've already set up as a new phone twice)
- disable most Push notifications
- disable automatic email checking
- disable Time Zone Lookup
- turn down brightness
- disable all radios
- uninstall all unnecessary applications
- leave the phone alone and simply not touch it
etc, etc.

I too have seen the rapid battery drain. Turning off the sending of diagnostics, adding all email accounts from scratch, and resetting the network settings has helped a lot. Still not good. But much better.

One interesting thing. In the system area of the location services, it looked like Traffic had been using my location. Why is this interesting? Because I have never once opened the maps application on this phone. I turned that off as well. But it didnt seem to help much.

You should get very close to the same amount of usage time with those functions turned on. If you feel up to it, enable each one little by little and see if the battery suddenly drops off a cliff. If you do then you've found the problem, but otherwise enable these features and put the "i" in iPhone.

It is the 28th and unless you are on your way to the Apple store to return your iPhone 4S then you are stuck with it. Assuming you bought it on the 14th. If that is the case sit tight, turn off battery %, and wait for Apple's update.

So...? 5% means nothing. I could drop my battery from 100% to 5% in 60 minutes just playing a ****** heavy game. Should I post the "5%" status and complain, too?

Just posting that your battery is 5% means nothing!

uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Guys I'm getting about 6-8 hours usage on my phone no problem. I don't have this battery problem and I don't understand what all of this nonsense is about.

I'm turning off my battery percentage and pushing off. We'll talk when the 5 comes out. Good luck, everyone.

Can you explain this rant, I apologize if its obvious, but what exactly are you complaining about him complaint about?

I'm getting the average 5-6 hours of usage before the phone completely drains. Unlike everyone else though, I have location services on for things like GPS enabled apps. I also have push notifications for facebook and e-mail.

Seriously, if you're going to turn off all these neat features that the phone offers for battery life, why not just get a blackberry or a non-smartphone?

That's the question everyone is asking. The problem is the battery burn is too great. Drain the battery when actively using, fine. Drain it when the phone is not in use, not cool.

Coming from an Android phone, I'm very disappointed with this, because it was supposed to be so amazing on this side of the fence.

However, with that said, I managed perfectly fine with my Android gas guzzler... I can do the same with this....

1. Turn off things you don't use. In fact, best to turn everything off to start, and turn things On as you decide you want your phone to perform that task.

2. Give it 2 weeks. Your usage should even out. You'll get used to when and where you need to charge your phone, and you'll be happy enough.

3. Hope for some fixes from Apple (a few pushed by google a while back fixed some of the bigger battery issues with android).
