Snapchat on my current phone does that already. I will go back and watch again but I dont remember an indication that this app is tracking your pupil location.

What if there's simply a permission setting for the face scanner, just like for the cameras or location data? Also, any company/app developer stupid enough to try this would face a huge public relations backlash. I doubt that Apple would even allow it, as they have final say over what goes in their App Store.

Look, I'm not sold on FaceID either, especially as it replaces TouchID, which I love, but there are reasonable concerns and then there's looking for any reason you can come up with to hate something.

Why are you making things up???

There is a third party FaceID API (just as they demo'd with snapchat on the keynote). That means all the apps with ads will know if you looked away! You will be forced to face the ad to continue otherwise it will just pause!!

Really disappointed with the iPhone X! What a mess!

You mean like how tons of apps uploaded your full address book before Apple found out after 3 years? Apple is not a perfect police, come on wake up

I don't care about taking down an empire. I have the choice to use offending apps. Or not. Or use alternate access methods (ie. web). I don't really understand your post.

The point is we all lose if something like this happens.

You not using the app doesn't fix the proposed problem but you said it like as if the solution is as simple as not using the service.

The idea is that people want a service and to not have it be compromised by bad practices.

Saying "don't use it" is a loss, and by no measure a win.

Past a certain size user base, boy cutting is impossible.

This is slightly different in that the app developer obviously can't hide it or do it covertly.

You're being paranoid and irrational, but if you're worried, don't get the phone. End of story.

But that's my point, the developer can "hide" it, because the reviewers are probably not looking at ads.

Just got an email. Your order of tin foil hats has been shipped. :D

It's really not. Remember, I'm not pointing the finger at Apple. They are doing the right things. The problem is the app developers, they will abuse it for a long time before Apple realizing what is happening

I was probably a bit rougher on you than I needed to be. Hopefully, this won't become a problem.

if this is true, and i believe it is, their is no way in hell i'll ever buy a phone from apple again. they manage to sneak ads on mobile devices before which i hate, this will be icing on the cake.

Don't worry, it's not true and actually what the OP described is quite hilarious.

FaceId is very smart and evelopers have APIs for recognizing people's faces for unlocking phones and security.

This is great technology, but can you imagine what companies can do with this? YouTube can play a video ad as long as your face is staring at the video, otherwise it pauses. Spotify can do the same thing too, waiting for people to actually stare at the advertisement before it plays.

Is this a dark possibility for us? Or are APIs restricting FaceID only to authentication?

Oh it's not just dark, it's sooooo dark

of course

Google will farm your face and make you watch ads over, and over, and over. once you are sufficiently detached from reality, they will install Google AI into your brain so you do not need to watch ads... every thought is a Google approved ad

best get the iPhone 8 and leave the X to me

No. Your face data points will be treated the same way your finger print is. Third party apps can’t use your TouchID data because it’s encrypted within the A11 chip and only used for authentication.

I can't believe there is this thread, and a thread about Apple telling advertisers that web surfers expect privacy. How can those two things coexist?

Do we think that Apple will restrict tracking cookies in Safari but let Google track eyeballs in YouTube?

I think the MacRumors staff should create a "doom and gloom no need to wait for facts" iPhone subform for threads like this, and all the other woe is me type threads. Maybe the teenager and adults acting like spoiled teenagers would migrate to such a subform, where they would feel right at home complaining to others of like mind.

I think where there is an opportunity to collect data/make money, companies will take advantage, even Apple.

Not to mention how a government will looks at this closely.
