If all you ever did was do/buy what you need you'd live a miserable and dull life.

You're missing the point. People are trying to claim they NEED a brand-new iPad. A luxury tablet computer is not a need.

If you could afford all the things you need, and had them.. how would that be dull? You might want to reevaluate what life's about, which is pretty much survival. If you had all the things you need, then you survive. Maybe I'm thinking too far into this...

I just want an iPad because I never had a tablet before. I have own and tried Macbook pro, iPhone now next iPad then maybe iMac or Mac Mini.

LOL.. Yeah maybe you think too hard on this. Not everyone actuallye NEED an iPad, maybe even most of buyer. They may only be curious, purely Apple fan, or at the least depend on their iPad for their job.

But why worry too much? If you find that you actually don't need it,you can always sell your iPad, just make sure you take care of it and you can get most of your money back. Consider the loss as rent fee after using it for some time.

Nah I don't need it. In fact, I've been have some cold feet because of the worry of it being a white elephant due to my other gadgets being in much more regular use and like the other poster said, it does exactly the same thing as the iPhone but is larger. But I haven't had a tablet and I've been curious for a while and I have the funds so...bring it on!

I don't need it as my iPad 2 handles my needs just fine. It was a gift from the 'rents and in return i'm giving them my iPad 2.

To all the folks out there that pre-ordered the iPad (myself included), did you get it cause you actually need it, or because it's just a cool new gadget? Personally, I got it because I don't have an iPad and it might be cool to have a tablet, by no means do I actually need it. My iPhone can pretty much do the same things. Oh well, I'm sure i'll love it! :)
Edit: For those of you who thought I meant like literally need it, no, I meant you bought it because you would have a use for it that another product wouldn't provide. Or buying it because you like Apple gadgets. Thought I would provide some clarification.

Nobody needs an iPad. All you NEED is food, water, and shelter. I bought it because it's a cool gadget. :)

The thread title is deceptive. OBVIOUSLY no one needs and iPad.

Yet they line up here and try to defend themselves, and a few are almost at fisticuffs (I always wanted to use that term)

What a bunch of suckers :D

Life is not about survival, it is about happiness. I don't need a TV, a computer, a car, or even a wife. However, I want them all because they bring me joy. I'm not saying an iPad is on the level of any of those things, but it does generate happiness.

Different people, different ideas. Survival first and happiness is what I believe.

Its a good thing its 2012 and most of us are in 1st world countries where personal survival is not much of an immediate issue. I doubt many people are passing up on basic food/water for an iPad.

I suppose. Seems silly to me since its pretty much an impossible goal, you will die and I'm certain there are plenty of things you do everyday that decreases your chance of living to see another.

Everything in life is for comfort and survival.

Death is inevitable, dying from stupidity isn't.

I ordered the original iPad the moment they were released and held off and did not pick up an iPad 2, despite some mighty strong temptation. I need this one so I can give my first gen one to my kids!

Actually my iPad is my fave device ever. I use it whenever possible, it's always next to me and I use it whenever possible. It's a convenience, a luxury an extension of me. I only ever use my computer for word processing, file transfer, storage etc.

I don't even eat sliced bread.. Ask yourself, what's the best thing since the iPad? Nada. The functionality and the smoothness of iOS. The iPad is like comfort food. I'm in love.

I just NEED it to hover in the air above me and adjust to when I change positions so I can read. Or if it could project its display as a hologram. Cue star wars theme.

Paper and a pen are cheap. You don't NEED an iPad.

It's much easier to make edits on a computer, but you're right, no one needs an ipad. It's not as functional as a typical computer in overall working speed or screen area. Using one with an external keyboard for many hours writing a report is just asking for neck strain looking at it.

Computer lab. Library. Typewriter (yes, you can still find them).

#firstworldproblem

Typewriters are still not easy to make edits on. Considering how cheap you can get a used PC that's a few years old (and just put a clean install on it), the typewriter isn't a really practical device especially when the terms of a typical report for high school or college tend to assume computer access. Anyway you're right, people always try to justify purchases that they want. It would make more sense if the ipad was a true standalone device with little compromise to use as a primary computer.

Even what we think of as third world countries have computers, especially in urban areas. Sometimes they're older, but even old computers can perform quite well for basic duties with an appropriate installation and reasonable maintenance.

To understand what it's like to own an Apple product (at least for me, a sinner who is filled with technolust), please check this out (it is, truly, perfect):

It's a want that has almost every sensation of being a need...
But of course it's not actually a need, and it's not like I can't live without it. Theoretically. But, I'm not willing to risk finding out.

In the meantime, I just don't know how I'm going to be able to wait until Friday.....

I NEED it as its gonna be my electronic portfolio for my ART, Photographs of installations, Sculpture, Video Art, illustrations and it will be so handy taking to exhibitions and showing/meeting people with all your work in one tiny flat device instead of those A1 size portfolio case back then! This is evolution baby!

Retina means a sharper screen when I'm reading software developer / programming ebooks. Do I *need* that compared to iPad 2? Nope. Does it make the ebooks a lot nicer to look at, especially when reading for HOURS? Yes.

This was my issue with the iPad 2. I got tired of reading on it after a short while. Text just looked fuzzy to me. The retina display is the one improvement I wanted before picking up another iPad. I'm now at a point where I am reading a ton of technical white papers and also reading other things and I think the iPad with retina display will be the thing to finally make me move from print books to ebooks. Not even my Kindle could accomplish that.

If you dont have a tablet youll be surprised how much you end up using it.
I have a 1st gen, I probably didnt need the new one, but hey, you only live once, contrary to what Bond movies say.

I'm just a gadget freak.. specifically an Apple gadget freak.. I sold my previous ipad1 for an ipad2, then the ipad2 for an ipad3.. It's minimal cash to upgrade, if you're smart about selling it at the right time.. so why not.

Its a loaded question ;) Do I NEED it, as my life would stop or I could not do my job without it? No. But did I get it just as a cool new toy? Also no. I use it quite heavily, both at work and at home (its great for meetings). So, while not a drop-dead necessity item, it is one that makes a lot of things I do easier.

Yep. This is a social network site to talk all things Apple, not Apple's tech support forum.
