Im getting the new iPad, the iPad 2 will be used by my wife and cat, the cat likes to play with some app, fish in water made by a pet food maker, maybe some day the cat will get into the numbers app.
Im sticking to this story.

At the end it doesn't matter what you buy.... What matters is that you feel happy with your purchase. Its the same thing with the iphone. I know many people that prefer to get the iphone 3gs because its free and the are happy with it. Other prefere the latest iphone because it makes them happy.

Thats like saying I don't need a car because I could bike to work.

I can type 100 WPM, between losing a ton of speed and having to rewrite a final version (or have very little editing ability otherwise) pen and pencil is simply a waste of time. When the value of time saved far surpasses the price of a purchase, defining it as a "luxury" is silly even if technically correct.

So why buy a $550-850 iPad 3 when you could buy a cheap notebook for $300, a netbook for under $200, a used iPad 1 for $200 or less, or a used electric typewriter for $20?

Luxury. Not a need.

My iPad (1st Gen) is used almost daily for all kinds of things, including work-related items such as WebEx meetings and email during non-work hours. During business travel, it's a constant companion in the air and at breakfast in the hotel.

The decision to upgrade was a no-brainer.

P.S. Life is not just about needs. If that were the case, it would be a very boring and utilitarian life. Life is also about fun, luxury, and improving the very experience of life.

Well, all we really NEED is food, water, and shelter.

I justified my purchase because I am running out of room on my 32g version and 64g will make my life easier. But then at my age I figure I don't have many years left and I got by on just 'needs' long enough. So now, I treat myself.

Plus I seem to have a fetish for new electronics and luggage. #

I am hoping it can replace my laptop. I am tired of waiting for a computer to turn on only for it to die an hour later without being charged.

Let me be honest .................. Stop Starting STUPID Friggin Threads Like This People!

If you got it great if you didn;t great ... if you need it or want it who cares, if you got black or white who cares, if you got the 64gb instead of 32 or 16 who cares why, if you got it cuase of the retina or didn;t whoe cares, if you are mad at the A5x instead of an A6 who cares .......God I Can Go ON AND ON with all the stupid question threads.

Let's keep it to real tech related questions.

You pre-ordered ... I pre-ordered ... we will be happy on Friday ... enough said.

Ok now I can exhale after this pent up aggresion has built the last few days cause of these STUPID ASS Threads!

It'd be interesting to find out how many of the people claiming they "need" the new iPad are buying it on credit or with all their available cash, rather than with a very small percentage of their liquid assets.

I'm betting it's easier to admit a brand new iPad's a luxury item you want and don't need to justify when you can easily afford it (and by "afford", I mean "you have substantial cash reserves and no debt").

Need? Of course not. Want? Yes.

Why? The screen; I've disliked the pixelated fuzzyness of small text on the ipad and ipad2 as compared to the iphone 4 & 4S. I knew I'd be ordering a new ipad the minute one came out with a retina screen.

Me too. I can't wait to read books in the new iPad!

To all the folks out there that pre-ordered the iPad (myself included), did you get it cause you actually need it, or because it's just a cool new gadget? Personally, I got it because I don't have an iPad and it might be cool to have a tablet, by no means do I actually need it. My iPhone can pretty much do the same things. Oh well, I'm sure i'll love it! :)
I don't need it but I promised may preacher dad that if I upgraded, I would give him my original one. and since I skipped the 2, I think this is a great upgrade.

Hahahahahaahahahahaha... I got to say that I agree with you...

I need a MacBook and an iPhone, but I don't need an iPad 3. I do want one though, and I can afford it, so I'm getting one :)

Like me momma said, all you really NEED for life is food, water, basic clothing and shelter.

You don't really need a music player, phone, car, expensive bed, coach, TV.
You don't really need to drink sugared water, beer, or eat steak and expensive lobster to live.

So most of things or gadgets we bought are things we don't actually NEED. But you ordered the new iPad anyway, right? :D
As long as you can afford it without distracting your other needs, mortgage, or family. Why not

/firstworldproblems.

I need it because whenever I want to use my iPad 1, my wife is using it for Facebook, Angry Birds or Flight Control.

I need my own iPad.

Its silly to define it so black and white. Yes its a luxury, but its a very minor one if you use it for hours a day for relatively important uses.

When I think of true luxury purchases, I'm thinking of $500 handbags with absolutely no extra utility and hardly any difference between some $50 variant other than the brand, expensive jewelry, paying thousands for the original copy of a piece of art, a really expensive car, various collectibles....

The iPad is a luxury in that you can fulfill most of its purposes a little less conveniently for a lower price.. but it still has a lot of practical use and is not price gouging for the brand (as perhaps various other Apple products do/have done in the past).

For me the ipad is the perfect gadget to give your laptop or pc a break... Now you can browse the web, see your Facebook and manage your tweets more confortable. Now I dont have to take my MBP to my work... I just get my ipad and check my emails at lunch... Or maybe read something... A book, the news... Etc...

Computer lab. Library. Typewriter (yes, you can still find them).

Well, in theory, nobody NEEDS to type papers either. Or write them. Because it has nothing to do with surviving from day to day.

And hell, why bother having this debate? We don't need to talk about the tools we use every day that make our lives easier.

However, society has been formed into a disciplined structure that is characterized by the ringing bell. If you are not completed your work by the predetermined due time, you fail and someone else comes along to take your place. Anything to ensure that you meet the deadline is a tool. People need tools to survive in today's society. If the iPad is a tool for your specific field of work, then the iPad is considered a need. If your field of work is surviving on the bare minimums from day to day, then the iPad is not a need.

To all folks out there that post in MacRumors (myself included), did you do it cause you actually need it, or because it's just fun to post? Personally, I did it because I have the account and it might be fun to post here, by no means do I actually need to post any. My life without MacRumors pretty much stay the same. Oh well, I'm having fun here! :)

I was surprised/a little worried about the amount of people on these threads who were saying things such as 'when will the money be taken from my account because I don't have enough in there' or 'I took a short loan to pay for it' etc. I, personally, am getting the iPad for a present for my birthday on the 17th. Being a student, although able to afford the new iPad, would find it hard to justify that amount of money, especially if that amount represented everything in my bank account.

The amount of people buying things they can't afford is a sign of the times i think.

Indeed. Some of those posts terrified me. I mean seriously, people: If you have to use multiple credit cards to buy one, if you had to borrow money to get it, if you don't have enough money in your account to cover the charge...YOU CAN'T AFFORD IT!

What times?

What times?

In the UK (Maybe the US as well?) at the moment there's a lot of media attention/social commentary about the culture of buying luxury items on credit by those who simply can't afford to. Personal debt has become quite an issue.

There seems to be an 'entitlement' culture here, where people believe they ought to, or should, own whatever things they desire. This link starts to show the extent of it http://www.creditaction.org.uk/helpful-resources/debt-statistics.html

I don't need it but I want it. This is the first Apple product that I kept up with and it will be the first product that I bought "on time". I bought my iPod Touch 4 months after it was released (got it last November). I'm happy it's still "the latest" iPod Touch :)

I'm not a fan of the iPhones so the only thing left for me to anticipate/want is the iPad.
