But are they any good? My daughter fancies a pair but I just don't hear it. So if I buy a pair of these for her Christmas pressie am I just throwing money away on £30 of tech and £200 of Rose Gold Beats branding. Or is the ratio more in the tech's favour?

Lachlan (lachlanlikesathing on YouTube) is one of the best / most in-depth reviewers on headphones / earphones, with an audiophile's ear, level of understanding, but without the audiophile bias / elitism (he's open-minded towards the entire range). The level of detail he covers is extensive, and he ranks it between his two favorite headphones within that price range. Check his review of the Solo 2 here:

If curious check his reviews on Bose headphones. ;)

If I want a phone I go to Apple, If I want a camera I go to Nikon, If I want headphones I go to Bose, I go to Sennheiser, I go to the people that know music and have a track record of creating devices for audiophiles.

I put this to my girl and she stared that stare, I knew that meant I was older than her and knew nothing of the real world.

Look, Beats are certainly not the best of the best in terms of sound, but it has decent sound and recent updates to the hardware has at least brought some welcoming improvements. If you strip off the branding of the Bose and Beats I doubt she'll know the difference. It's all about what will most satisfy the receiver of your gift, rather than what you think is the best.

Apple did not invent the term "rose gold". It is a very standard and well-known (in jewellery) type of gold that contains a higher proportion of copper than yellow gold

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gold#Jewelry.
Even though they did not invent the term...(believe me I know...my ex was very heavy on the rose gold)
I think Chrjy has a point as the color Apple is labeling rose gold does not realy get near any of the color range in (real) jewellery. To me (and some others it is plain and simple metallic-pink)

So sexy. Ordered a pair of the rose gold urbeats. I have some blue ones and they work fantastic for me. Also have Studios and Solo HDs. I'm no audiophile but I love the sound. The main thing I love about these is the colors.

there are tons and tons of infinitely better options not only in construction quality, but sound quality. beats are only stylish, yet, there are also plenty of other better sounding stylish options. take a look at this: http://dreamplain.com/audio/

those are the best headphones money can buy; as far as the research has extended. but every single one has undergone intense scrutiny and only the best quality reached the list.

The truth is they're not worth the price. You can get Jabra headphones for cheaper, that look good and sound better for a cheaper price. However, Beats Solo2 is not a bad product, particularly for bass heavy music. If you can find them in eBay for ~$100, it's a decent pickup. Still, the Jabra headphones can be found in eBay for cheaper and still sound better. I own both products.
