I tried that today in Queens, NY. I went there after running an errand, even though I didn't receive the ready email. They did not have the black pair I ordered. Since the email said it was available today they said they will probably get them in later. They did have white so I just got those instead. Worth calling first.
Problem is, they NEVER answer the local phone and you sit for 15 minutes before be routed to someone sitting at the computer who sees the same thing you do online. Poor service.
 
You are scaring me! Placed the order at 5 AM eastern and still no news. Really hope they did not mess this up, as just now I see they are no longer in stock in black at my local store...
I went to the store and told them I had an order that they had not processed and they said the same happened to several people today who ordered beats for pickup. Something is up with their system. Luckily they still had some on the shelf despite the app saying they were out of black.

It is odd that a multi-billion dollar tech company cannot pass orders through from their website to their stores. Glad I went to the store and got them. Took around 10 minutes on the phone to cancel my pickup order. Odd that the Orlando store wasn't trying to figure out where all the orders went.

Just looked again, they have 6 white and 5 black on the shelf. So stock is good.

Apple chose G. Smartly, in my opinion.
Bahahah, yes exactly. It's a win-win proposition...they are quite literally the best selling iPhone accessory in their stores. now they scoop up that profit, too.

I am in the same boat. Did an order on Apple.com first thing this morning. My Apple store now sells out of stock. But my order still says processing when I check the status of it.

I just came from the Queens Center store just now, and I picked up a black pair, in and out in less than 10 minutes, no problems.
 
Consistent with in store pickup in Memphis, Tn ... everyone is describing here ... mine "wasn't ready" but in the back, I had to cancel the order in store and just buy from shelf .... there was about 6 on shelf 3 white 3 black.
 
I've got the airpods and love them. Have Bose SoundSport for the gym / activity. I don't really see the advantage of these over something like the SoundSport. Sure they have the W1 chip, but the benefits on the Beats X seems to be minimal (faster pairing, a bit better reception, and better battery life). I don't think thats enough to make me switch from the comfort of the Bose.

Now the sensors (switch source, play/pause/stop) on the airpods are amazing and totally act as one would naturally want to interact with headphones. Without those features these seem like any other set of BT headphones.

Went to the Orlando store where I placed my online order for. Something is wrong with the Apple online system, they did not have the order yet even though I placed it 5 hours ago.

They had around 10 on the shelf so I bought one and am cancelling the other order.
Same here. Called store and they said they hadn't received my order yet, decided to stop by on my lunch break anyway to see if they had any in stock. King of Prussia store had 3 black left. I grabbed one and then, of course, as soon as I got back to my car I got the "ready for pickup" email.
 
I ordered for instore pickup about 5 minutes after it became available in my area (around midnight) and just got a text saying it's ready. Was starting to get scared there for a second since the store was showing as OOS since 8 am this morning.
 
Placed an order at 8am for in store pickup. 1:30pm still no ready for pickup email so I just showed up at the store anyway. While the associate went to the back to look for my order, I grabbed the last black pair hanging on the wall. He comes back and tells me there's no record of my order, even though he was looking right at it on his device o_O While he rang me up, I logged on and canceled the order.

There were at least 10 more pairs of white hanging there. Looks like more stores are out of the black ones. Imagine if Apple made the AirPods in black, you might have a 6mos wait lol.

They sound great. I prefer a brighter sound, and these are even brighter than the PowerBeats3, which are brighter than the AirPods. Deeper bass too. It has a deeper V curve on the equalizer than even the PowerBeats3, which is a bit of a surprise to me. The audiophiles who prefer a flat EQ curve, these are not for you, but then no true audiophile will put on any Beats anyway :p
 
It comes with a Lightning to USB-A charging cable...ya know...so you can buy a dongle to charge them with your new MacBook Pro. Come on Apple...at least include a Lightning to USB-C cable too to keep pushing your 'move' to USB-C/TB3...
 
Just got back from my local Apple store. They had one black and 2 white on the shelf. Not sure if they had more in stock in the back.
 
I placed my order at 7:30am (EST) this morning and still nothing. But hearing people are getting pickup notices 10 hours later is encouraging at least. :)

ETA... and just like that, I get the pickup email.
