Siri-ously? Android users feel so inferior that they're willing to pay actual money to diguise their use of actually inferior equipment? Come on, if it bothers you that much, just buy effing Apple hardware, and donate your Android crap to a women's shelter.

If people could afford $2/mo then they wouldn't be on Android to begin with! Just kidding...

Seriously though, I don't care about green/blue bubbles. I just want to be able to send/receive my Android friends better quality pictures etc. SMS/MMS sucks. So excited for Apple to at least adopt RCS for that.

So they raised $16 million in funding, but they're still charging $1.99 per month? For people to access their messages?

This may just be me, but worrying about what people think of you based on what color your messages use in a messaging app on a phone seems rather odd.
You think that $16 million was just "free money" ?

Just watched the SnazzyLabs vid that goes over the technical details, and I've gotta say, this one looks pretty dang legit. So long as the devs aren't lying about their encryption (they're inviting independent review, so let's look for that) this looks like about as close to perfect interoperability as you can get without Apple themselves releasing an Android client.

My wife uses Android and always has. I use iPhone and always have.
The survey says women dislike green bubbles more than men, so your scenario wouldn't apply (unless you are also a woman) . I do agree that it's a silly survey and not vouching for the validity of it, but absent any other data it's ok to make observations.

How could it possibly be "pretty dang legit"? Accessing Apple servers without permission? Claiming e2e encryption to an unverified endpoint?!?

I also watched that video, and I’m actually impressed with this implementation. It really sucks that Apple won’t just release iMessage for Android and be done with it. Sure, some people may switch to Android, but overall I think the iPhone and the Apple ecosystem offers a much better overall experience, so I don’t think that many people will jump ship completely.

It is hilarious to me how defensive and misinformed Apple mafia is over this.

I'd actually pay for official iMessage on Android. It'd be very functional and useful. Tie it to iCloud backup.

This is blatant plagiarism and is typical of Google and Microsoft who have never had an original idea other than: COPY APPLE.

Google could have developed their OWN messaging app. They had Hangoust and then canceled it to do some other stupid moonshot that has since been canceled. Google has no originality, no creativity, and are currently copying Apple's custom chip with their laughable Tensor line, which is nothing more than a Snapdragon.

Instead they went with a now antiquated RCS, and apparently had to surrender to the absolute positive proof now that iPhone is superior and Android is a cheap rip off, because someone had to reverse engineer iMessage, which is in and of itself partially unethical given it relies on exploits to a system that were heretofore undiagnosed and Apple will soon be patching and locking down.

Dear Google,

Get some creativity and make your OWN app rather than hacking competitors and then open sourcing for free someone else's hard work, as is typical with anarchists and syndicalists.
Wow that post is a ride! I mean, no copied code so no plagiarism. Google has developed their own messaging app... like, loads of times, they can't seem to stop, it's honestly a meme at this point. Tensor is based on Samsung's Exynos lineup, nothing to do with Qualcomm's Snapdragon line. Google's RCS is actually more well developed than the version of RCS that Apple will be implementing next year, though Apple claims they're working with the GSCM on that. And this app didn't reverse engineer an "exploit", it's Apple's notification framework as designed, they just figured out how to tap into it using the same methodologies as hackintosh users, who haven't exactly been locked out yet.

Wild how just about every sentence there was wrong! Let's see, anything else? Oh, right, this app wasn't made by Google. Like, Google had nothing to do with it. So your open letter to Google at the end there is uh... seemingly in the completely wrong thread.

"pretty dang legit" in that it works just about exactly like iMessage does from the user's perspective. The security question is separate from that, but like I said they're inviting third party verification of their claims so it might not be a bad idea to actually wait for that third party verification to happen. At least on the Apple server end of things it's using Apple's own encryption.

It's hilarious to me the lengths Android (L)users will go to in a vain effort to look like Apple users! Y'all ain't foolin' no one, podner!
I have an iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPad Pro 12.9" M1, MacBook Pro M1, 1 homepod, 4 homepod minis, and 3 AppleTV. But I also have a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 for no reason other than because I can.

I guess I'm a loser for wanting to be able to also get my messages on the one of my 11 devices that isn't made by Apple.

I'd say the security question is fundamental to the legitimacy of the app.

Apple will simply deep-fry every Mac serial number (spoofed or real) on that GitHub. You might be able to get around it if you have an existing Apple ID that only has one beeper connection and looks like legitimate usage. I'm sure Apple will disable it entirely but people with actual Macs and android phones will probably chug along for a little while.

I thought Apple's whole M.O. was that they waited for technology to develop/mature, so by the time they released their own product it would be fully fleshed-out and a much better experience?

That happened with Blackberry/PDAs, that happened with the OG Windows tablets from the early 2000s, and it looks like that might also happen with AR/VR. Hell, you could even argue that happened with BBM.

It can't be both ways. They can't wait for the technology to develop while simultaneously being copied.

Beeper Mini operates by identifying text message conversations from iMessage users and converting them to the recognizable blue bubbles associated with Apple's exclusive messaging service

wtf does this mean? I hope this was copied and pasted from text provided. This is not a good explanation.

I just tried and wow...it really works well and VERY simple to setup.

This is a game changer. Lol. My iPhone friends were like...welcome back. And I'm laughing because I'm sending it from my Android phone.

You won’t be laughing when your number gets sim swapped because you let a third party service intercept your messages.

They are both massive for-profit companies and I don't care who copies who, for whatever reason they want to copy, nor do I care who came first or invented something first..

Use what is best for you and ignore the silly "who's on first" nonsense of companies who don't care whether you exist or not.

It's worth noting that Eric Migicovsky is the founder of the Pebble Watch, which was arguably the best smartwatch until Apple released the Apple Watch. It was also one of the most funded Kickstarters of all time, and he's a serial entrepreneur that does stuff with YCombinator.

I've been following Beeper for a while, and this is not their main business model. Their goal is to take all of the different chat platforms that people use (SMS, iMessage, FB Messenger, Telegram, Discord, Snap, etc), and merge them into one app.

In other words he’s used to having Apple swoop in and ruin his business model.

iMessage envy is a thing for real? I was just thinking google was whining because google.

I mean maybe if they didn't start and kill 3459 different messaging products they could replicate it.

They did replicate it, so many times. Hangouts was it. Then they had another chance with Google Chat.

But Vic Gundotra basically ruined Google by burning everything on the altar of Google+
