I missed the opening and I would love to see the whole thing uninterrupted, preferably in full screen with decent quality if not HD. I looked on NBColympics.com and their silverlight video player under 'as seen on tv' to find the "Opening Ceremony Sights and Sounds" but it seems like it is cut down and not the whole thing. Is that just because of the commercial breaks or is there a fuller version somewhere? Also, can that player go full screen? I haven't been able to get it to yet.

Do a search. I'm sure someone has had to have posted it somewhere.

it5five: http://nbcolympics.com Not every sport is available, but most of them are. All of the available events are broadcast live and they don't have any NBC commentary--it's just the video straight from the official camera crews.

I think they save the "popular" ones for LIVE TV where they can sell more commercials. But after it's over they post it under the Videos subsection of each sport. You can even go to the Navigation tab and jump around to markers points.

There is a text commentary tab for the small video and a translucent popup for the large video. Not as "full" as a speaker, but you wouldn't want to read that much anyway. ;)

Was wondering the same thing. They look like the average age is around 13 or 14. Since they are the hosts they get this one pass on the rules but the public's eyes can't be deceived by passports, not when it's THIS obvious they are 11.

Bela Karolyi said that he felt confident that half of the Chinese team were underage, though he said fourteen or fifteen years old.

I am boycotting the Olympic Games because of China's disregard of human rights and the Olympic promise.

Did you read that the "$100 million"opening ceremony was a fake! The city-wide fire crackers and the flying child singer.... both fake!

But still..... Phelps is certainly doing well with his 4th Gold!

Oh pluleeezzz...don't be so gullible to be manipulated by media. They sell ads causing controversy. Like that never happens in the USA. It's called Show-biz.

I actually didn't mind the tough interview with her. It was not impressive to me the whole "about to cry but noo must stay strong" thing she was doing. Like, just cry and get it over with and move the f*** on. Had she got'en it out of her system before floor she could have helped her self and at least helped her team mates. But the whole super stoic thing... she was not pulling that off. Really, too much pressure for her and she did not know how to deal with it. But they are really young and pretty much isolated from the real world (home schooling etc) so they all did really well considering.

Well, I can't comment on the other girls, but I know for a fact that Shawn Johnson goes to PUBLIC school here in West Des Moines. Just an FYI.

Well hopefully that will be your last post in this thread. If you read the first page, this is a thread to celebrate and enjoy the Olympics and not a place to discuss the politics of China.

Now back to the games. looks like our games are over as far as the tennis goes. Andy and Jamie Murray have been knocked out of the doubles.

But on the plus side, we've got quite a few in to the rowing finals. So could be a few more medals coming team GB's way in the next few days.

Pity about the women's 4 x 200m freestyle relay though. :(

What is that about counting chickens again?

Never understood the idea of resting your best people when you don't have strength in depth. I'd like to think we'll learn from our mistakes, but you know we won't.

Do you know how difficult and dangerous it would be to shoot those footprint fireworks above the city live? Yeah, the shot was CGI, but who cares.. they even said it on the broadcast. I'm pretty sure they still had the fireworks go off in the city.

All I have to say is "GO Shawn Johnson on your individual events", "Go Michael Phelps on continuing on receiving your gold medals", and "Go Treanor and Walsh on kicking ass in volleyball!" Those are my favorite to watch.

Question...did u guys read that article about that previous world record holder for swimming, that Michael Phelps was trying to beat (which he did by a long shot)? I forget his name...but he was offended that he never got invited to the Olympics, as other previous Olympian winners/title holders got invited, and here was Michael Phelps trying to beat his record, and he never got an invite. Well, I guess he was pretty offended by it. What do u guys think? I think I'd be a little offended too if other people got invited and I didn't, especially when there is a guy trying to beat my world record...

Mark Spitz and his seven medals. His Wikipedia page already has a section on the snub.

Heh! You can only get away with a mustache like that these days if you're a motorcycle cop or an airline pilot. :)

Lipstick Jungle = (Sex and the City) mod (Desparate housewives)

correct?

> wow I don't like that deep throat NBC lady's fluff pieces. The other pieces are fine. She is thumbs down.

I suspect Spitz would have won even more medals, were it not for the considerable drag factor of his moustache... :p

Actually modern swimmers do have that extra advantage on that note. They have a suit where some scientists reverse engineer the skin of dolphins and replicated it on the molecular level. The suit that they are wearing is a nanotech device actually, so one can wonder whether Phelps can actually beat his record on even grounds...with a moustache too... :D

Which summer olympics gold metal takes the most event hours to win?

Misty and Walsh play man games in a whole tournament to chase their single gold metal. I know there's a 6 hour bike ride to win gold. Which event is the longest road to gold in terms of hours participating in the event (such as total game time for volleyball)?

I would guess basketball is the longest road. If you divide the length of event time by the number of gold medals awarded I wonder which event has the highest number. For instance basketball would be 2hrs*number of games played divided by the number of players + coach. Or in beach volleyball divide by two.

Haaa NBC's crowd audio track at swimming just went dead and you could hear the tape stop.

There has been quite a bit of controversy about that. The rules say everyone must be at least 16 in gymnastics (each sport is different), but there have been reports that some of the chinese girls are 13 and 14.

Rumor has it that this would been a much more vocal issue if the olympics had been held anywhere else.

Hmm, you don't think a government has the ability to issue passports with what ever ages it wants on it??

someone suggested that the girls are taking puberty delaying drugs: http://grg51.typepad.com/steroid_nation/2008/08/are-chinese-gym.html . and those chinese girls looked way younger than 16.

btw, did phelps just win again, i may have missed the last swimming event on nbc.

talking about nbc, they suck. they act like we're watching sex and the city instead of sports. i don't want to hear sob stories, i want to see the sport and less talking.

It's the number of gold medals that count. This practice of counting 'total' medals only came about because the United States has a less than even chance of besting China in the final gold tally. In previous games -- Atlanta, Athens, Sydney, even lesser regional games like the Commonwealth or Asian games, gold medal tallies have traditionally been the way to 'rank' the various countries. I have never seen it done the other way... until now that is.
