Those are OEM prices. I expect 3rd party solutions to be a lot less considering the low end materials being used. Also, related to what you said, the single power brick this uses won't ever get close to 60W.I'm sure cheaper ones will pop up from other manufacturers on Amazon, but if you add up all the separate components from Apple's website the Belkin solution is cheaper, only takes up one wall outlet, and looks a hell of a lot better.
You can also charge a non-MagSafe phone on the base, as some people have pointed out before.
The advantage to MagSafe charging is that the phone is precisely placed on the coils and can therefore operate at a faster speed with lower wasted power and thermals. The Android crew is going to whine about having fast Qi charging forever, but the chargers rarely output the full power unless perfectly aligned, which Apple is attempting to fix here.
If they can only figure out how to transfer DATA as well through MagSafe... We won't need a port anymore and it'll be glorious.
Magsafe Charger ($39)
AppleWatch Charger ($29)
Wireless charging pad (>$30)
3x 20W Power Adaptors ($19x3)
Total: $155
I don't hate this design idea, but I find the implementation poor. I am really hoping to see the import knockoffs improving this design by using Apple brand magsafe and apple watch chargers along with an economically priced qi base. I could see BYOC solutions going for $25 to $50.
