Just because something is old does not mean it is outdated; it would be if there was something fundamentally wrong with it but there isn't. It doesn't deliver crackly sound, it doesn't have wow and flutter. Floppies and CDs got tossed because they were slow and limited. The audio jack has hung around so long because of its beautiful simplicity, it works well and it doesn't need batteries. I think you're right, we will adapt, but it is unnecessary.

I am sorry you want it to exist forever, but everything in tech changes. Fortunately, there are a multitude of simple options. Remember, most people just use what is in the box-- they won't notice. The next biggest group never uses headphones and will love new stereo speakers and enhanced BT. A small percentage use other headphones and the vast majority of those have just one other pair that they will attach the tiny adapter to and forget it's there. The handwringing is amazing and the concern greatly overblown. Except for the media fanning it, most folks would just shrug as no big deal.

I've got bluetooth, usb and auxiliary... I use auxiliary and USB, but I hate using bluetooth; drains battery life, cant stand having to remember to turn on bluetooth on the phone, sound quality sucks, the microphone picks up all the loud noise within the car, etc.

I just use in-ear phones with a mic and plug in only one earpiece to chat. Takes a few seconds only and I dont have to constantly have bluetooth turned on.

But christ, Apple really dropped the ball on this one. Everyone I've talked to at work said they're not getting the next iPhone because of the headphone jack. I hope Apple's sales tank HARD with the iPhone 7; they need a wakeup call and start listening to their consumers demands.
I couldn't agree more. Consumers need to stop accepting Apple's game and I think this may be the final straw.

Use a BT headset. You can find noise cancelling ones very cheap nowadays. And you will have better range of motion to look around. The wires limit how far you can turn your head.

Thanks for the advice, but I will stick with what works for now. Nothing against what works for you, but I don't have any issues with my headset.

The earbuds easy to use, carry, no need to charge them, have a few sets of them around in case I lose or misplace them, and the audio quality is pretty good.

You might have problems using the earbuds that you have described, but I don't. So, there is no need to buy something else, at least for now. Maybe in a few years, when I upgrade my phone, I might consider a change.

It's elitist to tell someone to get a Bluetooth receiver from Amazon for $15? Anyone can have Bluetooth. Get a Bluetooth receiver, plug it into your AUX port, and boom. Now you have Bluetooth in your 2010 car.

But, then you would have crappy BT audio.

This is both brilliant and duh to a level that makes my head hurt. Hello old Apple. Crush these idiots who are leading you astray, OK? They aren't giving us the future as much as they are giving us the profit game. We have become so gullible. Charging and listening is NOT a new feature worth an extra expenditure; WTF.

"I would like to put it on record I will eat my iPhone 6 (Sept '14) if Apple inc dont include a FREE adapter in the box for the '7' worldwide."

JUNE 9th 2016

You called it. I think I remember reading that post.

At first I wouldn't have agreed with you, but with today's Apple, all bets are off.

Sorry, but you'll need something else to get the mob to storm Cupertino. Remember, the majority of users only use the Earbuds in the box. They'll notice nothing but better sound and features. The next group never uses headphones and the will love the great new streaming and New stereo speakers with twice the volume . The next group that has an other set of headphones will just attach the adapter Apple gave them and never think about it again other than being grateful to Apple for giving it to them for free. A very tiny number won't fit into the above categories and will sit and simmer on these blogs for about a year until they realize no one else cares about it and move on for your own health the sooner you do that the better good luck

Amen to them for making this - but cheez and rice, Apple is going down the wrong path. USB-C would have been the right way to go.

That adapter is hideous. I will take my chances with other Bluetooth options. And Belkins customer service is not the best.

I was thinking 25-pin serial to 36-pin Centronics parallel coming out of the computer.
Except the block is the same width on both ends, as are the connectors. The Centronics connector was somewhat larger.

Catch-22. Apple has made a significant commitment to the Lightning connector, which came first, and USB-C probably wouldn't have the form it does now if Lightning hadn't existed.

Great, buy an adapter so we can use an adapter with the adapter ;) (3.5mm to lighting for us with "regular" headphones)

NO this available soon-
at 14.99

People need to calm down about the audio jack removal. I mean, who is really crazy... the one who removed an ancient connector from their modern pocket computer, or the one who bought analog headphones for $350 now screaming and shoking... jeez.

The crazy one is the one who removed perfectly good standard. There was NO need to remove the 3.5 jack other than to sell more Beats headphones and licenses for lightning cables. As old as the 3.5mm jack was, it just worked. I didn't need an adaptor, and I can plug my headphones into my phone, my iPad and my laptop just fine with the 3.5mm jack.

Or just get an Android phone and post your iPhone back to Tim with a post-it note and the letters F U written on it!

Very true. I just see a company that doesn't meet my requirements any longer for mobile or desktop. A shame really because they created such a good ecosystem only to **** it all up with poor hardware choices.

Oh, I'm calm. Calmly enjoying my Note 7 (I'd be calmer if it wasn't the exploding model, but it'll be swapped soon enough).

Actually, it's because of the jack that I bought the Note 7, but wow, Apple is living in the stone age. The Edge Panels alone are worth leaving Apple's ecosystem. Not to mention the gorgeous screen.

Phil is right, everyone should have the courage to give the note 7 or s7 a test drive. I'll never own another iPhone.

So I can choose between a phone that explodes or at best is slowed down by Touchwiz and infrequent updates? Poor warranty service and apps that even devout Android users complain about? No thanks.

Give it a couple of months. You're going to be able to buy adapters exactly like this that are MFi certified for a fraction of the cost.

People are missing this. Look at how the charging cables and cases proliferated, people are nuts if they don't think that shortly there will be a whole market of cheap accessories that will make their lives easier. Most people will pick these up or just use the ones that Apple provided.

It's more likely that they did it to free up room and push towards wireless while preparing for the iPhone that will remove the bezels etc. The adapter comes with the phone and most people will use it and get over it.

This was real life
"I lost my iphone 6 last night after a late night walk in woods nearby.
I used "find iPhone" on rMBP "iCloud" to locate approximate area in woods. Got up early and my apple watch picked up on the iPhone - then I "pinged it".
Brilliant.
Very relieved - the apple watch and find iPhone saved the day."

If it had rained that July night please can you tell me (weather) sorry I'd been better off with a "6" a "7" - simple answer and no "be more careful next time" please, thanks

And a lot will move on too, and out of the apple ecosystem. If you use your headphones on multiple devices you will soon get pissed off with the adaptor. And if you bought good headphones (which I also see a lot of) you won't want to change them for new ones with a lightning connector, you will keep them and just get a different phone next time around.

I VERY much doubt this change will effect iPhone sales - the future is ALL wireless apple is leading (sorry) the pack.
