I must say, these threads are highly entertaining. In a few years we will all either be laughing at them or shaking our heads at Apple's mistakes, it'll be interesting to see which.

I can imagine we're going to see a flood of new accessories - Apple is one of the biggest manufacturers, there are going to be plenty of things to choose from.

Friendly reminder, this is how it'll look when trying to listen to audio and charge at the same time:

Only if you don't use wireless or lightning equipped headphones, or a dock, or another model of adapter. Nice try though.

There will be a dongle soon that will have lightning (male) to 3.5mm and lightning (female). Should've been included with the phone, along with the lightning to 3.5mm. Would've settled this whole thing quickly. They honestly should just swallow their pride, include the other connector for future shipments, and ship them for free to initial customers.

Every manufacturer will go this route, btw. It's foolish to think Apple will be the only one to remove 3.5mm from a major product. Emphasis on major product. Android phones without 3.5mm jacks do exist, already.

More kludge for a crippled phone. Why not just get an Android phone and make your life easy?
Sure, until next year when they all start dropping the audio connector, too. A couple of them already have...

It's super frustrating, but this is the direction the industry is going.

Holy Crap this is so terrible looking that adapter is huge just to listen to your music. Something is so wrong with this picture this is not streamlining your product it's creating more and more adapters on an already thin iPhone. I can't understand any of this, it's a nightmare. I'm keeping my iPhone 6s and SE.

Hey what happen to the updated SE2?

within 2-3 years and we'll all be amazed we were so attached to an outdated cable type.

Just because something is old does not mean it is outdated; it would be if there was something fundamentally wrong with it but there isn't. It doesn't deliver crackly sound, it doesn't have wow and flutter. Floppies and CDs got tossed because they were slow and limited. The audio jack has hung around so long because of its beautiful simplicity, it works well and it doesn't need batteries. I think you're right, we will adapt, but it is unnecessary.

People need to calm down about the audio jack removal. I mean, who is really crazy... the one who removed an ancient connector from their modern pocket computer, or the one who bought analog headphones for $350 now screaming and shoking... jeez.

You simpleton, there are many devices besides headphones that use this "ancient" world standard jack. There are external Mics useful for specialized purposes, credit card readers, wind meters and others I'm sure. Charging and listening is very useful when flying long distances so I can arrive with a full phone.

Just because you can't imagine a use for this ubiquitous jack certainly doesn't mean that it is very useful.

And yes, I don't have to buy it, and guess what, my whole family is skipping this one and the watches as well this year, 8 devices lost. We were very loyal and early adopters but this stinks.

Lol. What?

Having never tried a vanilla android, I'll take your word for that. But the Note 7 with Touchwiz is still wiping the floor with iOS. I've only had it a week, but I'm still kind of in shock about how much I was missing out on with Apple. It is just so sleek and simple to access everything compared to a grid of icons.

no idea what the complaint is about Touchwiz on the S7 as I found it to be very good and nice looking and the Note 7 to be even cleaner still. Old days of Touchwiz were pretty bad but not anymore. Besides you can change the launcher. My favorite launcher is "Action 3 Launcher".

Yah, my Fiance has the Note 7 and I agree it beats the pants off the iPhone. She went from an iPhone 6 Plus to the Note 7. What drew her in besides the eye dropping gorgeous edge-to-edge screen was the stylus with the configurable action menu on the lock screen. Her favorite app is the drawing app with the oil color blending on it. Oh, and she got the GEAR FIT with it for free. For her needs it's a great fit band as it lasts for several days instead of 1 day.

She's getting a wireless dock soon for it which brings up another sore point; I do not understand why Apple does not have wireless charging since they went all ape on removing the headphone jack so why not go the extra step and add wireless charging. Boggles my mind.

Not only is it smug but it is completely ignorant. I have a 2010 car and it does not have Bluetooth. I rely heavy on the aux port to blast out my tunes.

Many people's cars do not have Bluetooth. Some of the folks on here act like most people have Bluetooth in their car. Very elitist.

I've got bluetooth, usb and auxiliary... I use auxiliary and USB, but I hate using bluetooth; drains battery life, cant stand having to remember to turn on bluetooth on the phone, sound quality sucks, the microphone picks up all the loud noise within the car, etc.

I just use in-ear phones with a mic and plug in only one earpiece to chat. Takes a few seconds only and I dont have to constantly have bluetooth turned on.

But christ, Apple really dropped the ball on this one. Everyone I've talked to at work said they're not getting the next iPhone because of the headphone jack. I hope Apple's sales tank HARD with the iPhone 7; they need a wakeup call and start listening to their consumers demands.

I honestly cannot, with people suggesting this problem is nothing. I have owned EVERY iPhone to date. I have NEVER EVER, NOT ONCE used Bluetooth ANYTHING - or needed it. I do not want it. I do not need it.

WHAT are my options? To have a cluttered mess of cables, a dongle acccessory, buy a dock (which then I can't use the phone as it's sitting in that anyway - ridiculous suggestion from Phil Schiller there), or use...wireless headphones. That are expensive, that will ultimately fail and break, or easily fall out of my ear and pocket and be lost. It's STUPID. That's why no other company has done it. The iPhone goes way beyond the #firstworldproblems US, and in other markets Bluetooth is far from catching on. Many people will miss this. It will be a thing.

Given the price I'd be more inclined to get Airpods. With a battery case and 5hrs of use, it basically negates any concerns about charging and talking simultaneously.

I'm inclined to think Apple made the Airpods to partially address this issue.

Given the design of the iPhone 7, dont resist the wireless future and embrace it sooner rather than later. That would make more sense compared to buying more dongles and probably make for a more satisfying ownership experience.

Yeah, one or two exist out of how many... thousands? Why does the headphone jack bother you anyway? Please explain how it hinders your phone use.

Bought one of these for my iPod Mini over a decade ago:

Of course, the Mini had a headphone jack-- the point of this was to bypass the headphone amp and get a clean line out (for use with an external portable amp) without using the dock and whilst allowing charging. This is what I'd like to have handy for the occasional plane ride or road trip. Maybe it's just me, but it seems less obnoxious than these big boxy adapters. If something like this existed for the iPod 11+ years ago for a handful of people who wanted external amplification... should be a no brainer that there are enough people who'd like a solution like this for charging + listening for the iPhone 7.

The iPhone 7 is the same size as the iPhone 6... you could listen to music and charge at the same time on the iPhone 6. To do the same on the iPhone 7 WHICH IS THE SAME SIZE you need this (relatively) huge clunky adapter... and this is progress?

Does anyone know which JBL headphones they talked about in the keynote?

I think they have the new W1 chip inside... so they probably haven't been released yet. I want to keep an eye out for them.

Does anyone yet know whether Lightning was updated with an analogue audio pass-through, or does every adapter need to include a DAC? I've not yet found an answer to this.

Oh thank goodness! Now to plug in my headphones and charge while driving, I just plug my headphones into my 3.5 to lightning adapter, plug my usb cable into my car charger, plug that usb into Belkin's new adapter, plug the 3.5 to lightning adapter into Belkins adapter, and plug Belkin's adapter into my phone.

Thanks Apple for working closely with Belkin on this solution to your courage!
Apple wireless technology - includes lots of wires.

very cool would like that for my bought from new 10 year old blue 256GB mini
cheers

Oh great, my iPhone 6S does this already without anything.

Am I the only one who would actually go out of my way to not get the new phone?

Nope, I have a 6s plus on the upgrade program. I got it specifically because I wanted to pass on the 7, going out of my way to get it instead. I will look at the next one and upgrade if I like it otherwise I will just pay off the 6 plus and use it for a few years.

I had a moto x pure and loved it, I got the 6 plus to use the same apps as my ipad. I can easily go either way, biphonial I guess, so won't commit to anything until I see the next iphone.
