I used to occasionally find generic beer in the supermarkets, it was purported to be the bottoms of the big brewers vats which mades sense, since sometimes it tasted like Bud, other times like Coors or MGD.

That's like RepoMan and a "Drink"

the one I'm having right now....

2 great attributes in a beer

1 Cold
2 Free

I have to agree with stu here (as usual actually)
As I explained to my son a few years ago holding up a 6 pack that it was the most wonderful kind of beer in the world. Free beer.

It was Straub. A very plain tasting beer.

My favorite brand I would have to say in Yeungling. Great stuff. My sister had me run a keg down for her wedding and it was a hit.

Sorry guys
Microbrews all the way.
I love the local breweries and the products they make
one called Storm Brewing makes this wicked almost black beer called the Black Plague Stout with a cool diseased rat on the label... plus their summer lemon twist beer is unbeatable, kinda tastes like a good version of corona.

Granville Island Brewing makes really good beers too, and their seasonal ones are worth waiting for.

One company even makes a beer that is brewed with expresso shots...yum drunk and hyoer at the same time. actually it adds a weird but good smoky nutty flavour...

Sleeman's used to be good. Now they are nearly bankrupt...:)

Although I do enjoy the odd Samuel Adams, this Canadian always gets a case of Rolling Rock (Latrobe PA) when I'm south of the border. But I too am disappointed this discussion is limited to USA beers only, as we Canadians make some pretty fine beer too. Try Sleeman Cream Ale or Steamwhistle if you ever visit Ontario. You'll love 'em!
i'm a big fan of sleemans, but lately i found creemore springs and upper canada lager so they're topping the list. i'm about to crack open some st. ambroise oatmeal stout, good timing!

oh and i just turned 19 friday so at least now i can try new things at will (easier than getting the parents to pick it up)

Trader Joes actually had a really good winter-only brew that was bubbly like champagne. Had a hell of a kick too, IIRC it was like 12% alcohol. I've got two of them left, supposedly you can age them like wine.

Similar, theres a great place in the Santa Cruz mountains called the Boulder Creek Brewery that served something called 'Barley Wine' in the winter that was an 11% brew. Came in 8 oz glasses so you didn't hurt yourself.

The rest of their brews were top-notch as well.

Yea my Coors Light and Woodchuck Cider suit me pretty good, I haven't heard of a lot of these though.

Believe it or not, Sleeman's is now THE largest Canadian brewery. (Molson is owned by Coors of Colorado and Labatt is owned by Interbrew of Belgium.) Sleeman is currently for sale. Their problem is, they're both too big and too small at the same time. They're too small to get the economies of scale that keep the "huge" breweries profitable. And they're too big to get the subsidies and tax breaks the government offers to "microbreweries", which is why Steeler and Lakeport can sell a case for half what Sleeman's charges. It would be a shame to lose Sleeman's from the marketplace, as they're a rare company that demands quality above everything else. (Well, Sleeman's and Apple, anyway...)

La Chouffe, which I've only consumed in the US, so I guess it counts. ;)

I still have my Fort Collins, CO "BrewFest" T-shirt as a remembrance of my participation there in 1994. Man, oh man... I don't remember the various labels, but almost all of them were very, very good.

fin.
For some odd reason, I thought those beers aren't domestic to the US.

Fine, knew we'd get into other beers. :p I like Kostritzer.

Big fan of Guinness. Also of Harp when looking for a change.
Local beer I enjoy Goose Island 312 when I can get it. I don't know how far it is distributed, but its from Chicago

ps- 21st birthday is on the 26th.

Magic Hat out of Vermont is hands down my favorite beer ever!!!!!!!!!!!!

They make all kinds of fantastic beer....But #9 is truely something special..

Also,

Fat Tire
Iron City
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
Cut Throat Ale (canada)
Lancaster Milk Stout
Guiness
Victory
Rogue
Crazyhorse (do they still make that?)

oh...to have a #9 again.......drool.....:D

I enjoy a wide variety of beers, so it's hard for me to pin down a "best beer."

But I will throw out New Belgium and Saranac as two of my favorite breweries for having stellar beers across the board.

Magic Hat #9....beat me to it. Plus the label is really cool.

Rochefort Trappist beer is supposed to be some of the best you can buy worldwide...I'd be interested in trying it.

I have to put in a vote for beer of the root variety....

Sorry... I don't drink the regular stuff so I have no opinion there.

Yeah it's hard to pin down one. During the summer I tend to gravitate towards the IPAs and Hefeweitzens and other lighter beers. In the winter it's the stouts and the bocks and the darker, fuller beers that I like more often.

And wine is the same way for you. I have my favorites, but I have to switch it up or it's no fun.

Stuff it, I'm throwing a few others into the mix.

Big day beer: Cooper's Pale Ale
Sessioning Beer: Cooper's Sparkling Ale
More expensive sessioning beer: James Squire's Original Amber Ale
Winter Beer: Cascade Honey Porter
Summer Beer: Cascade Summer Blonde
Awful disgraceful beer that still works nonetheless: VB
