They aren't holding stock back. They failed to plan to have adequate inventories to meet at least 80% of the demand. Poor logistics planning,

yes and no...they thought they were covered but weren't due to large number of IUP orders and as a result had to procure other sources (BBY) to fulfill those orders...

I just checked my order with Verizon and see that the expected ship date went a week later from what it has been.

lol Apple has a quarter trillion dollars in cash in the bank. You think they did this because of the threat of a lawsuit from some no name attorney?

Class Action Lawsuits can sometimes cause a little stir, i guess apple

I think apple looked at the # of people that were gonna be in that class action suit and decided this might be cheaper....surprised its only one retailer, or maybe that best buy was to have that much stock

I guess this explains why AT&T listed October ship dates for Jet Black 7 Pluses. If there's one thing everyone knows about AT&T, it's that they'd much rather lie about something than apologize for a mistake, much less offer rewards...

lol Apple has a quarter trillion dollars in cash in the bank. You think they did this because of the threat of a lawsuit from some no name attorney?

no but they lead to bad PR and that can hurt the bottom line, especially when its returning customers, and yes if there were 10,000 plantiffs at $600 plus per thats $6,000,000 extrapolate that and yes it can hurt the bottom line..

Again, no they're not holding $800 phones in a warehouse that would be immediately sold just to have press. Not only would the board of directors immediately get rid of Tim Cook, but Apple would be in legal trouble from their stockholders as well. This ridiculous theory has been debunked for the last 9 years. I'm not sure why it's so shocking to you that the most popular phone in the world is hard to get when it first comes out.

its absolutely what they are doing, and do every year...the only phone that is actually short of stock is 7+...they were overwhelmed by IUP orders, which is why they evidently bought BBYs preorder stock.

Ordered the iPhone 7 in silver for my son and an 7+ gold for myself, both from AT&T on their "Next" program. His went straight to a Sept 16 delivery estimate, but mine claimed 23rd to 30th. Which of course I was bummed about, however, I had hope that they would be able to get it to me early, so I've been checking all week. His has shown as shipping for a couple of days, but mine finally went to 'shipped' this afternoon. Both are expected by 8pm tomorrow, yay!

On a related note, I'm sure that the Samsung Note 7 literally going up in flames has helped make this release much bigger than expected.

Yeah if you think Apple uses artificial scarcity you don't know Apple...or business. They could sell the phones and make a ridiculous amount of money rather then keep them in some warehouse for the lulllz and risk losing customers for a lesser phone or a different manufacturer.

nah.. they can sell more phones at higher prices due to the perceived scarcity..

for one, it makes the phone launch 6weeks long instead of 1 day.. if everyone who ordered the phone, receives the phone immediately... then launch day is over with.. nobody is talking about it anymore.. with it being spread out over a month, then it's launch month instead of launch day..

it makes the phone appear so great that apple can't fill the orders.. which leads other people to consider buying this spectacular new phone.. it becomes a must have item.

people waiting on their phone to arrive will be excited about it.. they'll talk about it in a not-too-different manner than a kid excited for christmas... excitement is contagious.. and excitement also helps numb the brain regarding sticker price.

more people, during the wait, will go for higher priced version when it finally comes their turn to purchase as they've had a few weeks to swallow the cost and arrive at "well, $150 more isn't so bad".. more people will do that than going the other way..

------
here's a question for you.
why does this happen every single year? if it happened once, sure, bad planning.. twice? hmm.
every single year?? it's controlled.

apple could easily make an abundance of phones prior to selling them.. like- they're definitely one of the most capable corporations in the world as far as the ability to produce the necessary amount of phones for everyone that's wanting to buy one right now..
yet, they 'fail' at it every year? i don't think so.. srry.

You do know that Apple isn't doing this for PR right? No amount of PR would make up for the sales they could have made. It's the most popular selling phone in the world, it sells out every year. They're not artificially holding stock back when they could sell them and make money.

Oh okay.

Wonder who screwed up calculating this mess.

DId any of of you have difficulty ordering the new iPhone 7 on release day?

I stayed up until midnight last Thursday on a workday so that I could order the new iPhone 7 and for the first time I decided I was going to use Apple's upgrade program. I logged into Apple's website at 12:03 and everything went smoothly until Apple attempted to verify my address with AT&T. I knew for a fact that my address was correct, both billing and shipping with AT&T. I tried to complete in order about seven times on the Apple site. Thinking there might be an issue with AT&T somewhere, I tried to log into AT&T's website but instead was met with a 30 to 40 minute wait time before I could even login. I needed to wake up early the next morning so I went to bed figuring I'd just go to an Apple Store on Friday and wait in line for a new phone.

The next evening I logged into AT&T's website and check to make sure my address was correct. It was. Still something didn't seem right, so I clicked around on AT&T's webpage until I found an address that I didn't even know was there. There is a 3rd address that is buried in the webpage. The address is in response to a question "where do you use your cell phone most often". This address had some PO Box I had 20 years ago and I don't even know how it got in there. This was the address that Apple was using to verify my address, not my billing address! I have no idea why, and it doesn't make any sense to me.

Now I discover that all iPhone 7 pluses are sold out and none will be available in stores, and if I order now expected delivery date is in November. I can't tell you how disappointed I am. I have been a die hard iPhone fan, and have bought a new iPhone every year since the first iPhone was invented. I am so upset that I am not going to buy a new iPhone for the first time ever, let alone use Apple's upgrade program to do it.

I guess my question is, does anyone know why the address that Apple used to verify my address was not my billing address but this "where do I use my phone" address?

Wow, weird story, maybe system glitch between both AT&T and Apple, sorry and hope that u can get a new phone soon....

For me I used Apple website, but it was not that smooth either, the site didn't work until 00:06 PCT and by that time shipping for Jet Black 7 Plus was pushed to first week of October....I had the option to order another color including Matt Black on launch day but I went with the Jet Black anyway....

Better not be f*%k the apple upgrade customers. Just cause they are broke they get special circumstances

You're trolling, right? For the umpteenth time, the IUP customers were not given equal access to inventory in the first place. No one in the IUP asked for special treatment, just equal access. Apple righted the wrong. If you don't like the outcome, blame Apple, not the IUP customers because the customers are the only innocent ones in this.

I won't even dignify your "broke" comment with a response.

Was this Apple diverting supplies from Best Buy to sate its own IUP customers? Or was it Best Buy "overbooking" hoping that a large enough number of customers would cancel and they could sell all their inventory? That makes no sense because an iPhone is not a perishable commodity like an airline seat.

Some customers who pre-ordered an iPhone 7 or an iPhone 7 Plus from Best Buy are getting some bad news less than 24 hours before the official launch date, with Best Buy sending out delay notification emails this evening.

We've heard several reports from disappointed customers who are now seeing delayed shipments of their iPhone 7 Plus models that were originally scheduled to deliver on launch day, September 16. It is not clear if Best Buy has also delayed some iPhone 7 models.

According to the emails customers are receiving, they can now expect to receive their devices on October 7, a full three weeks after launch. As compensation for the delay, Best Buy is offering customers a free $100 promo code to be used on a future Best Buy purchase.

Yesterday, Best Buy also began notifying customers who pre-ordered the Apple Watch Series 2 that their devices would be delayed. Customers who originally had a delivery scheduled for 9/16 will not get their new watches until September 28.

Supplies of the iPhone 7 Plus and the Jet Black iPhone 7 are highly constrained, leading Apple to announce that no iPhone 7 Plus models and no Jet Black iPhone 7 models will be available for walk-in purchases tomorrow, with stock having been fully depleted during pre-orders.

Apple recommends customers instead place orders for the iPhone 7 Plus online, where many models list shipping estimates of two to three weeks, and up to November in the case of the Jet Black iPhone 7 Plus. Apple Stores are expected to have some iPhone 7 stock available for walk-in customers, and carrier stores may also have very limited quantities of the iPhone 7 Plus.

That's why I always go to Wireless Wave... they are great and called today and it's had already been delivered

how does it feel to be an unpaid intern for Apple Marketing?
They have had plenty of time to queue up units for launch. They simply manipulate the supply to help gin up hysteria. Nobody will have any trouble picking up a 7 in a month.
But the temporary state of demand outstripping supply means a few mentions in the media.

I'll have no problem when I go buy my phone tomorrow.
I'm getting the most recent one that still is compatible with headphones.

Again, Apple isn't manipulating supply. This has been debunked every year. Why is It so hard for you to grasp that the top selling phone in the world 8 years running is sold out for launch day??

It happens every year because it's the top selling phone in the world every year. This isn't a hard concept to grasp. Popular items are going to be popular. Story at 11.

Secondly Apple doesn't sell more phones at higher prices due to scarcity. The price is the price all year long.

Third, production doesn't even begin until august. Only weeks before preorders begin.

Seems like Best Buy underestimated the demand and didn't order enough.

Either way it still is a bummer if you ordered with an expectation of getting it on 9/16.
Actually, no. I talked to the general manager of my local store tonight about the launch tomorrow and he said Apple shortchanged all 3rd parties this cycle, and he received a grand total of five phones today. He said that Apple has a habit of shipping stock the day of launch, so he expects more tomorrow morning, but it could be 5, could be 500. He has no way of knowing until those boxes arrive. I'm of course pretty ticked off at BBY for not being more honest about the tight supply chain and possible delays in delivering pre-orders, but I can't place the blame completely on them for this. If Apple is going to allow 3rd parties to sell devices for launch, they need to be a lot better about getting the proper number of devices to those third parties in a timely manner, because ultimately it is the loyal customer like me that is getting the shaft.

Except Apple tells you the ship date when you place your order. They don't contact you a week later and tell you it's been pushed back several weeks.
Only they don't. If you don't get into the first batch, they give you a time frame that could be two weeks long.

From what I was told today by a obviously weary General Manager, it's the former, not the latter, and it's not just Best Buy that's having to deal with this.

All of this nonsense and these shortages are hilarious. Especially because "nobody wants the iPhone 7/+ without a 3.5 mm, that's definitely a deal breaker". I suppose that's why I'm having to wait til Nov for my JB Plus to arrive. At least I'll have it by Thanksgiving. Something else to be thankful for. Haha
