This definitely seemed like a lame move from Best Buy (I say if they couldn't sell the phone profitably for the retail price, they should have just not sold it unlocked to begin with), but all this "Best Buy is lame and needs to shut down" talk is kind of silly, if you ask me.

There are certainly times when their prices are not as good as their competitors (like this present situation), just as I'm sure it also works the other way around. But for the things that I frequently price check — movies, monitors, TVs, various Apple products — they are *usually* quite aggressive at keeping their prices in line with at least Amazon (the other one I check the most, along with newegg, bhphoto, etc.), sometimes even cheaper. They have maintained a killer price matching policy over the years even while other retailers such as Wal-Mart have recently abandoned theirs. Their rewards program is great, and their website / app generally offers a much better user experience than I get with Amazon.

And, of course, the most obvious advantage Best Buy has over any online retailer is... there is an actual, physical store where I can A) Go and experience/test out various product in person, first hand, B) pick up many products immediately rather than having to wait two days for Prime shipping (which is great and all, but not as great as same day), and C) RETURN products without having to go through the hassle of printing out an RMA, trying to package everything back up, and making a trip to the UPS store, etc. I'm sure some of you have had legitimately bad experiences, but my own experiences with Best Buy returns have always been quick, easy, and problem-free — and that alone would be worth wishing for their continued existence, even aside from all the other benefits.

And to steal a line from Scrooge's nephew, I believe Best Buy has done me good, and will do me good, and I say, God bless it!

Was the phone Best Buy selling a SIM free unlocked phone? If so, then for some people I'm sure it was worth the extra 100USD to get it on launch day rather than wait for Apple to start selling their SIM free version.
This whole thing seems to me like a tempest in a tea pot...

All BestBuy’s iPhones are the closest thing to Apple’s SIM Free phone.

Someone up top at Best Buy has no idea how to deal with the consumer public. Amazing.

What else are they going MSRP+ on in their stores? I guess I better not shop there or else they may try to **** me on a washer dryer or fridge.

Lol who am I kidding? I walk in there with my amazon app, scanning crazy barcodes to add to mywishlist.

That's not the same at all. "the table next to me" analogy doesn't work because the guy in BB in a different line isn't getting it for a lesser price. Everyone at BB who buys the phone pays the same price, just like in a restaurant. Are there other restaurants selling the same wine for a cheaper price? Of course. But does everyone curse the first restaurant for charging more? Of course NOT.

Sounds like you're just the kind of customer Best Buy likes, then. Of course the person behind you in line can get something for less than you if they insist on a price match. Maybe you know enough to get the lower price too, but maybe not. Sure, it's easy with the iPhone, but are you sure about everything else? Might as well just shop elsewhere in the first place. That's what Best Buy's promoting with a markup on such a high profile item. I don't see how that's a brilliant business strategy.

In September I bought an AT&T prepaid iPhone SE 32 GB for US$139 plus tax. AT&T was charging US$149 plus tax for the same phone and Apple was charging US$349 plus tax. I don't recall anyone claiming that Apple was gouging its customers at the time.

I've gotten great deals on iPads from Best Buy and I've gotten great deals on Android phone from Best Buy.

Just out of curiosity, who else is/was selling unlocked iPhone X's

I like Best Buy. It's an organized, well laid out store. Sometimes they have good sale prices on items. I shop there all the time without incident. It's actually one of the few stores I enjoy going into o_O. I do not need assistance for purchasing items, as I'm quite informed about purchases via the internet.

You just need to be an informed consumer.

One less reason for me to shop there... still deals like their recent sale on the iPad Pro (12" 2017 for $150 off and free Apple Pencil) still compel me to go.

Seriously... its a business. If there was a market for devices that cost $100 more, then good on them.

Don't like it? Don't buy it. If enough people don't buy it, they will have to adapt. If they do, then they found a niche where they can make a few more dollars.

I was able to buy a Verizon iPhone X outright from Best Buy so my dad can travel to China and use TDS-CDMA (3G). I didn't have to jump through hoops of proving I was a Verizon customer (I'm not) or any of that non-sense, so although I wasn't too happy having to pay an extra $100, I was willing to do so. Honestly paying Best Buy the $100 is way better value for me than deal with being ripped off on Ebay/Craigslist or waiting in line this Friday. It meant I will get the phone in the mail on Friday and my dad is happy.

"causing some confusion with our customers and noise in the media"

Oh no. We got caught, let's blame it on the media. Hmmm, who does that remind you of?

What if people who placed orders at $100 more don't care paying the extra amount? Is BestBuy going to still honor those orders they took on opening day?

Most things are priced at or below competition anyway, even during sales. I’m constantly on slickdeals and whenever deals pop up, more often than not, it’s akteady st that price in Beat Buy.

Remind me to never shop there ever again. They still oh me 80 for a return I made months ago

They’re still honoring orders. And some in this bread have said that they also were refunded the $100 when they asked.
