Its a toss-up between Gran Torino and Let The Right One In.

(I reserve the right to add Moon when it's released to rent on iTunes next week!)

i think we forgot about the most insane film that almost all girls wanted to be in;)

I thought Gran Torino was pretty good, but the acting (other than Clint) was terrible. That's what you get when you cast a bunch of non-actors in lead roles, though.

Haven't watched many movies this year.

I only watched 2012 and Transformers 2. I prefer the former. ;)

The Hangover. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time.

Honorable mention goes to Bruno.

I'm a fan of comedy movies more than anything else. I enjoy action and sci-fi flicks, but I don't think one will ever be my personal favorite of the year, unless all the comedies in that year really tanked.

Worst movie is New Moon. Haven't seen it. Don't ever want to see it. But all I know is that I'm a straight man and I'd rather watch the scene in Bruno with the closeup of his cock in a loop for 2 hours than New Moon. :D

(500) Days of Summer
Public Enemies

And I am certian that'll I add 'Up in the Air' to the list when I see it later this month.

Star Trek. All the way.

sleeper pick: Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. i know, it should suck. somehow, it doesn't.

i am glad to see the tarantino over-rating system still in effect. some nobody makes basterds and everyone would notice how fragmented, disjointed, and self-indulgent it was. but then, it IS tarantino. :)

i'm just sayin' ... in a movie CALLED inglourious basterds, showing ads FEATURING said basterds... is it too much to ask to spend more than 4 minutes with the guys? really? maybe take ANY time to tell ANY story involving any of them? give them some individual personality of some sort? no? darn.

yeah yeah, he's a genius. or a hacky twit who has lost track of how to write a movie. one of those, for sure. :D

Not so fast. I just watched G.I. Joe. I challenge anyone to name a worse movie. There was literally nothing redeemable in that drivel.

No way man.

if you were looking for a slick, modern, military-tinged, sorta patriotic, cool-gadget superhero team action movie for 12-year old boys, then it is EXACTLY what you are looking for. it is an EXCELLENT version of one of those.

if you don't like that sort of thing... you will hate it.

but it does succeed as one of those kinds of movies.

just as transformers succeeds as a movie about giant transforming robots. i mean, what else are you looking for? they are giant robots. that transform. mission accomplished.

First off, Gran Torino was a 2008 release--otherwise that would be my choice. As such, I'd pick Up.

i really enjoyed I love you, man. Kind of crude at times for my liking but I liked the concept and idea behind the movie.

That's reminded me "I Love You, Man" and "Role Models" were both pretty fun, especially "Role Models"

i am glad to see the tarantino over-rating system still in effect.

I really don't get Tarentino. I still need to see Moon, but I liked the trailer.

With that, I think the best movie I have seen so far this year is Moon.
Moon is my favorite (so far!) for 2009. I saw it twice in the theater and it was great both times.
Am I the only one who thinks the movies released in 2009 were pretty weak?
No, unfortunately. I go out to see movies pretty often (usually about 70 times a year) and there have been only a handful of really good ones. In addition to Moon I also really liked Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Ponyo (released in Japan in 2008 but in North America in 2009), Star Trek, State of Play, and Up. A few I just liked including ...
I thought 2012 was a riot. I actually was thoroughly entertained by that.
I'm not sure if the director, Roland Emmerich, intended it that way but I thought 2012 was one of the funniest movies I saw all year.

actually i'm happy it's didn't turn out like it was advertised
and what would have more time with the basterds achieved ? for most the motivation was more or less the same and quite some where fit with enough personality (brad pitt, eli roth, till schweiger)
i rather prefer having the other characters added (Brühl, Diehl, Waltz, Krüger especially) than having more scalping scenes instead

yeah yeah, he's a genius. or a hacky twit who has lost track of how to write a movie. one of those, for sure. :D

while tarantino often has quite a bit of problems writing whole films (some kill bill parts, deathproof) what he on the other side often excells are his dialogues scenes
the basement bar scene alone is brilliant

oh yeah state of play wasn't that bad either ... (if i comapre it to some other movies of this year)

and having watch 2012 yesterday i'm glad i didn't pay any money for it... and who granted all that money to make that movie ?_that's_ what i call a bad written movie.... as Transformers 2 script wasn't written but only consisted of a collection of pictures of robots, explosions, megan fox close ups, explosions, military equipment and not to forget big explosions

Zombieland ... I'd be so bold as to say that Woody Harrelson deserves an Oscar nomination. He's that good.

The International ... All kinds of problems with the plot but an absolutely great shootout in the Guggenheim.

Taking of Pelham 1-2-3 ... Fantastic remake of a great movie.

Defiance ... (imdb lists it as a 2008 movie but it's release was Jan. 16, 2009)

Looking forward to: Sherlock Holmes, Avatar (although I'm getting trailered and teasered out), the Lovely Bones.

Transformers was a kids movie but didn't insult my intelligence at every turn. G.I. Joe was just plain stupid.

This thread is premature by a few weeks. But I'll list my top 5 of 2009 (so far) and will post my final Top 10 the first few days of January. I've included the US release date.

Top 5 Movies of 2009 (so far)

5. Zombieland (10/2/09)
4. 500 Days of Summer (7/17/09)
3. Watchmen (3/6/09)
2. District 9 (8/14/09)
1. Outlander (1/23/09)

2009 was a good years for films. However, compared to the last few years, it was not as strong. 2006, 2007 2008 could possibly be some of the best years in film history.
