Hey all, I have installed Wipr, but it is not "officially" a Safari extension as:

1. it is not displayed in the "Safari Extension" feature in the Mac App Store.
2. After installing, the actual extension is not in /library/safari/extensions but they are spread in library/containers, library/application scripts and library/group containers.

I am now afraid and have disabled the extension to ask you guys, and especially who knows a lot about software development etc. Is it possibly malicious or something? Has anyone verify this?

Thank you!

Take a look at Better Blocker https://better.fyi/

They support only Safari and iOS. They are NOT paid by anyone to unblock (AdBlock Plus has been known to do that for example). The team is husband and wife and they are ardent anti-surveillance advocates, so your payment to them helps support it from that angle, if you care.
Does this thing use Safari Content Blocker API? Or some VPN stuff. I can't find anywhere in their website that says they use content blocker API.

I haven't read the thread so I'll just say this: AdGuard, the application (not the extension) blocks everything perfectly and consistently. I've been using it for years and it's my favorite app. It has saved be so much time over the years which is invaluable, of course.

Hope this helps! :)

I second Adguard for Safari. The Basic filter with Peter Lowe's list and Adguard Spyware filter seems to cut 99% of the cruft I encounter.

I'm also searching for a tight addon since uBlock Origin is dead.

But I don't really trust AdBlock with it's policy... They can access my private data - but they don't do... But who really nows.

I'm not really convinced at the moment.

Same here. That’s the reason I decided to pay for Wipr.
It works a treat.

By the way, whether AdBlock intentionally access private data or not, is irrelevant.
The point is that the tool has th ability to do so and it could be exploited.

+1 for Wipr.

It's really cheap but it works great and is very fast.

Bear in mind, by "new" I mean the ones I tried were mostly established brands in ad-blocking but they had just released their new versions into the MAS to comply with Apple's new Safari extensions model (after Mojave was released?). The four others that I tried were uBlock, AD Blocker (by FIPLAB), AdBlock Plus and AdBlock for Safari (by BETAFISH). None of those four had icons that occupied the menu bar, only AdGuard did.
Yeah, I'm not a fan of having an icon, not even so much in terms of looks or something like that, but based on the permissions that seem to be needed for it all for some reason (going by what's shown in Extensions section of Safari's Preferences).

For now I've just been sticking with Ka-Block! (both in macOS and iOS, although in iOS I sometimes switch between a few other ones like Firefox Focus, BlockBear, and Norton Ad Blocker).

FWIW, AdGuard fixed it now so that icon no longer shows in the menu bar - I guess they caved after a number of people complained. I’m now back on their bandwagon : )

Sorry but how do you know that “They can access my private data”?

EDIT
From here: https://help.getadblock.com/support...ock-can-access-my-data-and-browsing-activity-

Which Ad-Blocker does not do that?

Wipr doesn't. Adguard doesn't either in the new version, as long as you disable the Safari icon. 1Blocker also doesn't, but it's outdated, and I wouldn't recommend it at this point.

Btw, you can check if any extension has this ability by going to Safari->Preferences->Extensions, and then clicking the extension you're wondering about.

But I use actually the Adguard App for the macOS and the iOS (not extension). So I would be tracked, right?

Hello, I am a member of AdGuard team, so I believe I can answer your question :)

No, you will not be tracked. The filtering happens within your Mac, we don't know anything about your traffic. If you use AdGuard for iOS and use AdGuard DNS -- sure, we know what domains you send requests to, but we don't store or use this information in any way.

If you have any specific questions, they will probably be answered by our Privacy Policy: https://adguard.com/privacy.html

And if you still have more questions, ping me and I'll try my best to give answers.

Thank you very much for this reply.

Actually, I bought a lifetime license because I find the app to be very good.

I have two other questions:

1. Am I able to use more than 50.000 filters on Safari if I use the Adguard app? With the Safari-Extension I receive an error. Now, I activated more than 50.000 filters but I don't know how safari behaves here.

2. Unfortunately I cannot use on my Mac the website www.s.to anymore because, if I click on something, I am been redirected to this website https://gaitheed.com/1803695.html which Adguard blocks. But on Windows and Microsoft Edge + the Adguard app I have no problems with it. Why? Is there a solution for this on Safari?

Thank you again for

With AdGuard for Mac standalone app, there are no limitations oh now many rules you can use at a time in Safari. Feel free to use as many as you like.

We were unable to reproduce it. Make sure you don't have anu custom filtering rules in your User filter in AdGuard for Mac. Otherwise you need to use the reporting tool to send us a report (while on the problematic website, click on the Assistant icon in the corner of the page, then select "report a website").

I tried again with basic filters and it doesn't work. That is really strange! I sent a report.

By the way, it doesn't work neither on the iPhone. In the past I had no problems with.

Ok, if you get no news or replies to your report, consider sending a message to support@adguard.com (you can do it right from the app).

I solved the problem.

It was the AdGuard-DNS:

176.103.130.130
176.103.130.131

Without it – but with AdGuard-App – the website works.
Interesting, but we still had no problems with navigating the website, even with AdGuard DNS on.

Could you please give your exact setup? I mean, the browser version, the OS version, if you use any app to set up custom DNS etc. Do you use AdGuard at the same time with the DNS?

Sure:

  • Safari 12.0.2
  • macOS Mojave 10.4.2
  • No other apps to set up custom DNS
  • Now I don't use anymore Adguard at the same time with the DNS
With the iPhone / iPad was the same.

I've been using AdGuard extension on the iMac without any problems for over a year now. I tried some of the others mentioned in this thread. I find AdGuard easy to work with and it does an excellent job at blocking. :)
Also I have been using AdGuard (Lifetime) on the two PC's since 2014.
