I'm also searching for a tight addon since uBlock Origin is dead.

But I don't really trust AdBlock with it's policy... They can access my private data - but they don't do... But who really nows.

I'm not really convinced at the moment.
What do you mean by uBlock Origin is dead? (I still use it on both my work and home iMacs.)

It is not at all dead. Just apple trying to pretend anything not using the new blocking api is not worth using. Which is totally wrong. I am not sure how long they will let us keep using these tho.

And to the people not trusting adblock- i understand your position- but really- anything doing serious blocking needs to examine what is happing in the browser- or it CANNOT block everything. Adblock does not transmit any of this data to anywhere- it all happens locally on your machine. Install Lulu or little snitch to prove this for yourself.
As for adblock desktop app- well that actually does a man-in-the-middle on your whole connection and installs it's own CA certificate. I am not sure i like this behaviour- but adblock seems legit to me. Just use their free dns service if you dont wish to use the browser extension or the desktop app.
Happy blocking.

FWIW, AdGuard fixed it now so that icon no longer shows in the menu bar - I guess they caved after a number of people complained. I’m now back on their bandwagon : )
Still showing in my menu bar. I have the full app version of AdGuard though, in case that matters.

Edit: Nevermind, I found the setting to hide it from the menu bar. Thanks!

Another vote for Wipr. Both on iOS and macOS.

If anyone can suggest actively developed alternatives which do NOT have permissions to view data, I'd be all for trying it out, but Wipr has been doing well so far.

Have you looked at Ka-Block! -- it doesn't seem like it has permissions to view or do anything with data, although I'm not sure how actively developed it is as updates don't seem to be frequent (although it might be that there isn't that much that's needed in terms of updates).

The best adblocker for Safari (and other browsers)?

Install bind9 via macports and generate a list of ad delivering domains and reroute them to localhost, route other DNS traffic to your preferred other nameserver.
Setup your now local name server as your primary name server in the network settings and problem gone.

Detail explanation (for Linux, but it's the same basically on Mac OS): https://www.it-dan.com/blog/block-ads-linux-and-bind9

Wipr doesn't. Adguard doesn't either in the new version, as long as you disable the Safari icon. 1Blocker also doesn't, but it's outdated, and I wouldn't recommend it at this point.

Btw, you can check if any extension has this ability by going to Safari->Preferences->Extensions, and then clicking the extension you're wondering about.
What about AdGuard for iOS? I don’t see a way to check what permissions it has on iOS.
[doublepost=1556178009][/doublepost]How can I block the intrusive pop ups on certain sites that load when you click on something? I have Pop-Up blocking enabled and have tried with Firefox Focus and Ka-Block. They still pop-up.

Bumping my question above. Why do I get on pop ups even after using ad blockers? This is usually on streaming sites.

Thanks to the recommendations in this thread, I tried ABP, AdGuard, and uBlock.

Alas, none of them can block ads on sites such as this:

https://www.poemhunter.com/poem/the-pleiades/

https://www.poetrysoup.com

It'd be great if people would try those sites and report on how well their favorite ad blockers do!

It's horrendous to go to a site about poetry, wanting a moment of contemplation, and be bombarded by adverts.

I'll have to go back through the thread and try out more.

I know this is slightly off topic, but I just navigated to both of those using AdGuard for mobile Safari on my iPad and saw zero ads.

I went to those sites for you. With uBlock Origin 1.16.0, there are no ads on Safari 12.0.3. None.

I just picked up a raspberry pie and set up a pi-hole on my network. The advantages of this is that its compete network wide, any device on my network will have ads blocked. It was very easy to set up, though I did find this guide to be fairly useful

Pi-hole as mentioned earlier in the thread acts a dns server and blocks any urls from a series of pre-defined lists. You add a customized list as well, which I also did which helps block youtube ads. So far everything appears to be working very well.

One thing I had not noticed when buying my raspberry pi, was that it was HDMI only and I don't have any monitors natively supporting that, but I have a TV in close proximity to my router, and so that worked well enough.

I'm still poking around and seeing what tips and tricks I can employ that will be helpful.

I have a Pi-hole setup also and I've never even attached a monitor of any kind to the Pi. I do everything either over SSH in Terminal or through the Pi-hole admin web page at the link above (substitute your Pi's IP). It works out pretty well.

That IP address is specific to you ;) my pi is on a different address, and I do in fact use putty to remote into it, however to turn on that feature, I needed to be connected directly to pi and use raspi-config. Once I did that and retrieved the IP address, I could use my laptop to access the pi and install pi-hole from there.

Understood... that is why I mentioned you would need to substitute the IP of your Pi.

to turn on that feature, I needed to be connected directly to pi and use raspi-config.
There is sort of a workaround to avoid that. You can use NotePad or TextEdit to make a blank text file called ssh (no extension) then just copy that file to the root of your Rasbian install after you have setup the SD card on your Mac or PC. That enables SSH upon the first boot, so you can get in without having to turn on SSH with raspi-config.

I tested this on my MBP with Wipr, and there were no ads at all. I used to use 1Blockr until the devs went silent and stopped really supporting their legacy version. I love Wipr and it has been great since I switched several months back.

AdGuard for Safari seems to be working great for me on these sites.

Tested with my cMP, Safari, and Wipr. Wipr must have blocked all the ads, because I saw none at all.

So, I already had Wipr on my MAC, but after all this discussion, I decided to install it on my iPad. I’m already reaping the benefits. Great ad biocker.

I do not trust any commercial apps when it comes to navigating the web. They all have a "privacy policy" but we all know like Goole and Facebook, they will not be held accountable if anything goes wrong. Free and Open Sources Software is the way to go.

I don't understand why there is no uBlock Origin for Safari. Its the de facto standard with privacy concerned community on the internet.
