When you have the Display preferences open. Should be one on each display.
There is a checkbox for "overscan" or something like that. Play with that.
That will being it all back on to the TV screen.

okay, i did as you say and i found my play as i play around with the screen display preference. I accidentally check the box that says mirror... now everything is gone >.<

Once again, I put my macbook to sleep after i can't figure to get my screen back... I had my macbook on sleep mode for a day and open it again the next (yesterday), it's still the same. So... what can i do now... *remember I broke my lcd already* so... yeah. I'm gonna check again when i get home... i'll edit this if it's back to normal otherwise... I'm waiting for help lol

thanks in advance again!

2008 Macbook

I have an Intel core 2 duo macbook purchased in February 2008. I have a mini-DVI to VGA cable which does not fit into my macbook. Through reading this thread, it appears I need to get a mini display port to VGA cable. Is this correct? Where would I get one? And what other cables do I need to connect to a fairly old TV? (red, yellow, white inputs) Thanks!

I have a Mini-DVI to video adapter and my tv or macbook doesn't seem to recognize each other when i connect them. it stop and turns blue but nothing happens .. but my friends macbook works just fine when she uses the same adapter and tv... the only difference i noticed was that she had a longer list of color displays in her system preferences. Is there somewhere i can download these or a guide to calibrate my own? or is the problem something else entirely?

Mini DVI--VGA--???--RCA

I recently bought a Mini DVI to VGA adapter for my MacBook. What cables would I need to hook it up to my RCA connection TV? Thanks in advance.

The first one I listed above will do it - it's called the Apple mini-DVI to Video adaptor ($19) and then get a cable to connect the yellow on the screen to the input on the adaptor. You'll also need another adaptor to connect the red and white cables to your headphone jack on the macbook.

Just wondering, do you need an actual yellow cable for this or will any color cable work?

I have an older tv that has a HDTV monitor but not a tuner and an older macbook, any help to connect the two is appreciated very much!

macbook to tv problems.

When I connect either my White Macbook or my 12 inch Powerbook to my TV (KDL-52Z5100), the computers act properly and seem to think everything is fine. But the TV's PC input selector is grayed out and unavailable as though the TV doesn't see the computer at all.
Both work fine with the same adapter/svga cable setup when plugged into a standard high res computer monitor, so I don't think it is a cable or connector problem.
My MacBookPro hooks up to the TV and works perfectly.
Any suggestions?
Many thanks in advance.

VGA cable

if you are using a MacBook>VGA cable to hook up to the TV, some TVs are fussy about the kind of VGA cable required. It needs to be one with all 15 pins connected.

Hi guys!

I recently bought a MiniDVI>HDMI cable to connect to my TV. It is working BEAUTIFULLY! However, I'm having trouble with the audio. I bought a cable that connects from the headphone jack to the red & white audio on the TV, but when I plug it in, the audio doesn't come through the TV or on my computer speaker. Help?

Also, this may have already been posted here (maybe this is where I found it) but the MiniDVI>HDMI adapter and HDMI cable I bought were extremely affordable on Amazon for anyone who is interested!

I am having the same problem, i checked my audio preferences in both TV and Comp, but couldn't find anything to allow the TV to receive audio via the HDMI cable. Also using the 3.5mm y adapter didn't work

My simple solution was to hook up my computer speakers to the computer, but it would be nice to have the sound come through my TV

Yeahhh. I'm pretty sure that the audio won't work through the HDMI cable because, even though HDMI supports audio, it has to go through the Mini DVI first, which, to my knowledge, does not support audio. Could be wrong. That still doesn't explain why the audio wouldn't work through the 3.5mm y adapter though

The reason for that is your TV is set on the HDMI input and not the S-Video (which also has the red and white plugs too). Your TV can't play a video through HDMI and have sound come through another source, its all or nothing.

I could be wrong though

Hello,

So, I have followed the advice early in this discussion and bought A VGA mini-adaptor, and then VGA Cord for my 2006 Macbook. When I put it all together only my screensaver was appearing on the TV. I thought I might have a big problem. Then I accidentally discovered that if I move the internet window out of view to the right of my computer that it would then appear on my TV. So, in order to view things on my TV I have to move the window out of screen on my computer. Normally I would view this as a minor inconvenience but, if watching net flix or anything else, when I hit fullscreen it goes to fullscreen on my computer and cannot be moved. So, I guess my question would be is there a way to make my macbook center everything or to change the settings so the tv only picks up what's on my laptop. Thanks in advance for the help.

Mini DVI - VGA -> RGB Component......... Does it work????

I'm having problems connecting mi 720p TV with this connectors. Does anyone has a solution or explanation???

Thanks!

Same peoblem

Guys

I am also having the same problem got;
Mac mini connected to Sony Bravia via hdmi and RCA cable coming from headphone jack on mac mini.

Using hdmi port 1 and RCA plugged into the one next to the VGA on tv. Even tried 3.5 jack in both sides.

Spent 2 hours. Still no luck. Can anyone help please.

General rule of thumb:

HDMI is digital only. If you want to get analog from this, you will need a convertor.

DVI is both analog and digital and is electrically compatible with HDMI and VGA.

I recently just bought cords to go from my macbook to my tv.
I have the mini-dvi to dvi and then dvi to vga cords. Everything fits in to where it is suppose to and when i connect it, my mac screen turns blue for a second, but nothing happens to my tv. When i change the input to VGA, all the tv says is "no signal". I tried this on 2 different tvs and had the same problem.
When i go to displays, ive tried the mirror image thing, and it even shows my tv as a display option but nothing seems to work to get my desktop onto my tv screen.
Can anyone help me?

late 2006 macbook to TV video problem

After reading all 3 pages of this thread I thought I had it. I bought the matching mini-DVI to VGA cable, after first buying a mini DVI to RCA for a newer machine, then bought a VGA to Yellow RCA (plus S-video which I am not using). Also mini jack to Red and White RCA for sound (which is feeding fine to TV.) TV is older Sony Wega (SD 480 resolution)which already had a red, white, yellow cable set hooked up to it from when I had a working Netflix instant Roku box hooked up (it died). I am using the yellow RCA from that to feed the video, When I have Macbook hooked up and come out of sleep mode the TV has a momentary white screen flash, but no video. I understand the miniDVI on these older machines does analog so I don't think there is a digital to analog converter needed. But when I go to system preferences and do display it only shows my laptop LCD display and when I try to look for another display it says the display tab is hidden because I am only hooked to one display. Clicking detect displays does nothing. How do I detect (and select or mirror) my analog TV so I can use it as a display? Help! Thanks for any you can provide, I am stumped.:(

hello
i brought an macbook a couple of years ago, and iv now just brought a 42" panasonic tv.

iv brought an hdmi cable and the mini adapter.

once it is all connected, and i go into my system preferences, i can look at all the different resolutions for the tv, but can not get any of it to appear on the tv.

what i am doing wrong?

Won't work with these cords!

Hi! Hoping someone may be able to help me.

I got all of these cords to connect my Macbook to the TV, and my desktop background shows up on the screen but it won't allow me to do anything. Are there settings that I need to change?

Also, a friend with a PC used the cord (without the Mac attachment of course) and it worked great.

It's clearly working because my computer's background shows up on the TV, but I can't get anywhere from there! Help please! Thanks.

new to all of this

Hi, I've read through everything and can't seem to find an answer here, so apologies if I'm repeating questions.

I am not technical at all and am trying to connect a 2007 Macbook to an old-skool TV set.

My Macbook has a Mini-DVI port, and the TV has 2 x Scart at the back, and the three things on the front (yellow video, and audio white L (mono) and red). Both the Scart ports on the TV work with the DVD player (just switch it on and it works, don't use the TV otherwise).

I have a mini DVI - VGA cable, and VGA - Scart cable. When I hook these up to my Macbook the screen goes huge and the TV was going blue before, but hasn't been today. In System Preferences - Displays I get the 3rd tab with "arrangement".

I take it even if I got picture, I wouldn't get sound with the VGA cables. Would Mini DVI - S Video - Scart / those three things on the front be better?

I've tried changing the channels on the TV but nothing.

Any ideas? If so, please explain with links, pictures and not-too-techy terms please :)

Many thanks
