I'm using a moshi displayport to hdmi female and then using an hdmi cable and it works perfectly! It ends up costing less than $30, and even less if you have an hdmi cable already lying around. Links below for the best prices I've found on the web.

Moshi Displayport to HDMI $25.30 with free shipping

HDMI cable! $1.71 with free shipping

The quality is amazing btw!

No. You need a cable for audio as well.

Hello everyone! I'm about to join the ranks of people confused and a bit lost when it comes to connecting my Macbook OS X to my older tv that has an S-video port and the yellow, white and red audio and video ports. So far I have a mini display port to VGA adapter cord to go from my Mac to the missing cord that I need and a Stereo Mini RCA "Y" Cable that is supposed to connect my Mac's audio output to the speakers on my old tv for sound. Now I was told to look for a cord that at one end has a VGA port that would connect to my mini display port and on the other end of this much needed cable should have an S-video connection to connect to the port on the back or front of the television because there are both. Now my question is this.... Does this cord exist? I am having trouble finding it or maybe I'm looking for something that I don't need and should be searching for something completely different. The type of tv I have is older and is a Sony Trinitron box set. Also, the mini RCA "Y" cable that I just bought only has a red and white connection...not a yellow. Is this fine? will it still work? A quick educated response would be more than appreciated so I'll be eagerly checking for answers. Thank you everyone for taking the time to read this and hopefully reply.

Hi
I've read through this entire thread and not seen my question brought up. If I've missed it, my apologies.

I bought a Display Port to HDMI Cable Adapter so I can view stuff from my MacBook on my Samsung TV.

My issue is that the TV displays my computer screen as quite dark and the brightness controls (on either the TV or the Macbook) do not effect the display on the TV. :( Any help deeply appreciated :)

Maybe it is not a brightness but a colour issue. Go to System Preferences, Displays, Color and try another profile.

Also for some people having issues with HDMI sound, depending on your setup, check out System Preferences, Sound, Output. You might be able to choose your television there.

Hi, and thanks for the response. I tried another profile. Nothing I changed affected the display on the TV, although it changes the display on my Macbook. I'm completely miffed. Can it be the cable? I bought it off ebay, very cheap £5.45.

I appreciate the help

Well I've had to bin the Mini Display Port DP Male to HDMI cable I was using. Ontop of the picture quality being poor, and not being able to adjust the brightness of the TV displayed picture, which was dark.... the cable today no longer even works. One of the pins broke off. It lasted 3 weeks. The company will not take it back because they say once you open the packaging they will not take it back. So despite the cable costing £5.45 + postage, its ended up a complete waste of money.

Beware of cheap cables on ebay by Plusbee :(

Would anyone be able to recommend a seller for the minidisplay port to HDMI cable. Its for my Macbook to Samsung TV (it has both HDMI and VGA input at the back). Im in the UK and there are so many listed on ebay for around £4-6. In PC world they want £30 for the cable! yikes. I'd like a cheaper version, but with my last experience (posted above) I don't want something so cheap its rubbish. Help greatly appreciated. :apple:

Have you checked http://www.monoprice.com/ they tend to have well proced decent merchandise.

You didn't say where the one that didn't work came from.

Hey. Thanks for the reply. The cable I bought from ebay.co.uk, seller is plusbee. Monoprice lists their prices in dollars, so I am assuming they do not have a UK site... Im in the UK so don't want to pay for international shipping.

I got the dvi - vga from my macbook, then I bought a vga - hdmi cord to go to samsung tv. This isn't working, any suggestions? Thanks

What about telling us, what exact Mac you have?
Or maybe have a look at these links:

Anyway, MacBooks did only come with Mini DVI ports, the MacBook Pros had DVI.
And audio is not transferred via those outputs on those Macs. You need an extra cable.
And if you have a Mini DVI port, maybe look into a Mini DVI to DVI adapter and then the DVI to HDMI cable.

Later models have miniDP so it really does matter which one it is.

I suspect the problem is deeper though.

Usually you can't stuff analog video into a digital port (VGA->DVI or HDMI) you can occasionally go HDMI/DVI-> VGA if the analog signal is carried on the connector.

The problem I see with this is that you are going from a digital connection on the macbook to an analog connection in the vga (which the macbook can do without problem) but they you are going back to a digital connection with a vga-hdmi cord which does not process the image in order to make it digital.

Get a mini-dvi to dvi connector to plug into the computer and them convert dvi-hdmi and you shouldn't have any problems.

I actually use the VGA in on my Sammy TV for my Macs using the Apple adapter and a VGA+audio cable from Monoprice.

You could also probably just get the right single cable to HDMI from monoprice if we knew which Mac and you are in the US so they can ship to you...

I have the old Macbook Version 10.5.8. I was thinking of trying the Mini DVI adapter to HDMI http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001PVUIL4/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&m=A3E5K6GEFSI075

And then I'd have to have a separate cable for the audio??

I don't have surround sound, but will that cable work for my audio? Just from my computer to the tv? Or do I need the RCA (red, white) ??

You will need either this: http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Unlimi...6IV8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325888715&sr=8-1

Or this: http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-Audio-...Z5CP/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1325888715&sr=8-3

Many tv's have small lines showing groups of inputs, on this tv you can see that there is an audio input connected to the hdmi 2 slot by a white line. http://www.google.com/imgres?q=tv+i...8&tbnw=199&start=0&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:9,s:0

Okay, my tv has a slot that says "DVI Audio in" beside the HDMI slots. So I would just use the first link you sent?
