Try to use a Minidisplay port to dvi, then a DVI to HDMI cable if you can, this will give you the best picture

thanks for the tip.

do you mean mini DVI to HDMI to Scart then? This wouldn't do sound though, would it? sorry I need this spelling out...

I'm not too worried about the best picture ever, just looking for the easier (and cheapest) way to watch stuff from my laptop on the TV. would mini dvi - s video - scart do this?

thanks again for your help :)

So, I have followed the advice early in this discussion and bought A VGA mini-adaptor, and then VGA Cord for my 2006 Macbook. When I put it all together only my screensaver was appearing on the TV. I thought I might have a big problem. Then I accidentally discovered that if I move the internet window out of view to the right of my computer that it would then appear on my TV. So, in order to view things on my TV I have to move the window out of screen on my computer. Normally I would view this as a minor inconvenience but, if watching net flix or anything else, when I hit fullscreen it goes to fullscreen on my computer and cannot be moved. So, I guess my question would be is there a way to make my macbook center everything or to change the settings so the tv only picks up what's on my laptop. Thanks in advance for the help.

Go to system pref.>displays and mirror the displays to show the same thing on both screens (the tv and the MB monitor)

ok, i had the same problem as erin and took direction from MasterNile. Worked perfectly. The type on my macbook screen is now blown up. I can reset the comp screen to normal when it is connected to the tv by going to system preferences>arrangements>uncheck mirror box, but when I disconnect macbook from tv the type blows up again. I cant figure this out.

thnx for helping! andrew

Connect cable directly to MacBook Pro without EyeTV

Is there a way to connect the composite cable wire directly to a Macbook Pro and watch TV that way without EyeTV or a televison set?

I dont pay for cable but I do get local channels through the cable wire in my apartment when I hook it up to my old Sony TV. I was wondering if I could do this on my Mac with a cheap composite cable connector. Is there an app out there that can process the cable signal or do I have to shell out the $ for EyeTV.

Just looking for a cheap alternative if its possible. Cant seem to find one...Thanks in advance.

anyone having this problem?;

every now and then my tv screen goes 1 solid color and the macbook screen does the same thing and the only way i can get control back of the laptop is to reboot it. no matter what brand of tv (ive tried samsung, sony & lg). it will work just fine then randomly do the solid color, ive made it as low as 10mins and as high as 2hrs before the screen locks up.

this is using mdp > hdmi adapter.

Hi,

I've purchased a mini dvi to vga converter and a vga to hdmi cable to connect my macbook to my tv but whenever I plug it all that happens is the display on the laptop enlarges but is not displayed on the tv. Previously when I've done this the spaces double up and then you can drag screens onto the tv. Help please ?

It is treating your TV as a second monitor, and spanning the width sideways. If you go into your display properties you can set the displays to mirror mode and this 'problem' will be fixed.

And what exact Mac do you have, otherwise we could list you dozens of deals?

And where do you reside, country-wise, as deals differ from country to country?

oh cool thanks! its a mac book os x 10.6.5 in san diego Ca usa

Is it one of the newer ones with Mini DisplayPort?

You either need a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter (Apple or Monoprice or your local electronics store), and if it is a pre-2010 model you additionally need a 3.5mm to RCA cable (Monoprice or your local electronics store).

If it does not use Mini DisplayPort but Mini DVI (white/black pre-Unibody MacBooks), then you need a Mini DVI to HDMI + a 3.5mm to RCA cable.

How to: Connect a MacBook, MacBook Air, or MacBook Pro to a TV

Please help

I am having the same problem, i checked my audio preferences in both TV and Comp, but couldn't find anything to allow the TV to receive audio via the HDMI cable. Also using the 3.5mm y adapter didn't work

My simple solution was to hook up my computer speakers to the computer, but it would be nice to have the sound come through my TV

Macbook with Sharp LEDTV: The image works fine on let's say input no4 but the audio won't work at the same time which is on input 3 (RGB), so it's either with have the image with no sound or the sound without the image...
we're using hdmi cable for the image and a speaker cable for the sound.

Please let us know if there's anything else we can do... THANKS

macbook pro to TV

I have a pre-2010 macbook pro and am trying to figure out how to hook it up to the TV to watch movies from my macbook. I tried a mini display port to HDMI but I could not get any sound. Also the tv picture showed the desktop image but the movie was off the TV screen.
Does anyone know what I should be doing?

TV "No PC Signal"

I have connected my Mac Book Pro to my Sony HDTV using a VGA cable with adapter.

The connection is being recognized by my Mac but not by the TV.

I am able to change the settings in display preferences for the TV connection.

When on the "PC" input channel on my TV it says "No PC Signal"

Again the Mac recognizes the TV, but the TV does not recognize the Mac connection.

Could this be more of a problem with my TV settings?

pre2010 wont output audio thru the minidisplayport. youll need another cable from the audio socket to the tv input, probably phono. i think...

scrambled image on tv

I don't recognize this as a problem anyone else is having, so I would appreciate help if you have time to reply...
I just bought a mini-DVI to video adapter for my macbook. hooked it up to my old tube tv and it caused two problems. First and most importantly, my television image is scrambled. It does show the desktop image and i can move the cursor, windows, etc. around. But image is scrambled and no color. Second, the computer screen image kind of zooms in way far, which I was able to correct by unchecking the "mirror displays" box as was advice given for another problem earlier in this forum. (But does nothing for the scramble problem on the tv.)
Any ideas how I can fix the scrambled image on my tv would be most appreciated.

Can't drag the applications into the TV screen

Hello, I'm a new Mac user and I want to connect my new 2011 MacBookPro with my Samsung HDTV 1080p. I bought the mini display port to HDMI cable adapter and I managed to connect the MBP with the HDMI cable I already had with the TV. Reading the forum I realized it was normal to get the back of the screen on the TV instead of a mirror screen. I tried dragging the applications as people suggested but even though I managed to drag some icons, I can't drag the application itself. I'm trying to watch a program I downloaded from the internet and to use Quick Time Player to play it. If i tried to drag the Quick Time Player it disappears from the TV screen  If I tried to drag the minimized icon of the program that was already playing it does stays buy if I tried to play it once it is on the TV, there is no way I can maximized the icon, or increase it size at all, and there must be something wring I am doing because the sound keeps coming out from the laptop and no the TV while it starts playing in the little icon. (2011 models are no suppose to need a separate audio cable)
I tried to do mirror image and I don't have that option under "system preferences", "display"
I'm so frustrated with all this, I have been trying to watch this programs for more than 3 days and I haven't been successful :(
Can somebody HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!

Ok! Figured it out!

Applications -> System Preferences -> Displays (Hardware) -> Arrangement (middle tab) -> Mirror Displays

This centres it!

I have the same problem! Does anyone have a solution?

System Preferences > Displays >> Arrangement >>> Mirror Displays (but know, that the display with the lowest resolution determines the maximum resolution used on both, thus one display will have a lower than native resolution, except when both displays have the same native resolution)

help for tv hookup to imac with no screen picture

I'm sorry, I couldn't figure out how to post a new question.
I have an iMac which had the LCD burn out. I have it connected to an HDMI t.v. via mini dvi to vga, then vga to vga on the t.v. I get the background picture from my iMac, but no icons and I can't see my mouse moving around, no tool bar, top or bottom. What am I doing wrong? Can anyone help me, please?
Thanks!

The television is an extended display instead of a mirror. Give me a bit and I will have an exact answer for you.

AWallen90, were you ever able to come up with the solution to my dilemma about the black screen on my LCD and the mirror possibilities to the tv hookup? I am unable to see anything on my computer and thus unable to access my system preferences. I've tried Command F1 and F7, but neither work. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I am still working on it. I will let you know as soon as I figure it out. got half way there. I was able to change my second monitor to a mirrored extension which is half way to what we want. I'm attempting to do it with hot keys so it is a bit difficult.
