...using the phone without a case is madness. Unless you're an Apple exec with a drawer full of free spares, you're gonna have a bad time.
ahh but that's exactly the mental trap case manufacturers want you to have! It's the "no one can help you" that EvilDoers tell their victims to put them into an "I'm helpless, and only you can take care of me" mindset (control their victims). Seriously, it really is. You are better than you think. It's precisely the case that makes you more clumsy and "helpless", causing you to handle your device that way.

Do yourself a test: if you have carpeted floors, go without your case for a few days. Yes you will have anxiety for about three days. Day 4, it fades. By day 6 or 7 you'll see what I mean. Plus, cased are a regressive tax and an inflationary measure to the total bill of sale. You don't need it.

You likely have an iPhone 12 or 13. You'll notice that you can (and should) pick it up by the flat edges and you can do so safely because that flat edge gives your fingers grip space. Likewise, you can even hold it regularly and safely by the flat edges with just two or three fingers; death grip not required (and a death grip paralyzes your muscles and inhibits grip tension after you release). If you have an iPhone 6-11, then you'll see what all this fuss is about lamenting and criticizing the rounded edge designs (because that also was stupid; merely a visual trick at the cost of comfortable hold and reasonable grip space).

Seriously, cases are a mental handicap and a mind trick. You're better than that. #YouCanDoIt

Apple will never win, if they design a thicker phone to accommodate the lenses, people will moan, if they don’t, people will moan! if Being able to lay the phone flat on a surface is for some reason so important, then buy a case ? I personally don’t get why the wobble is so much of a problem, I use the phone in my hands, not as a typewriter on a table. Get a grip folks Lol just appreciate you will be getting a better camera. I will be coming from iPhone 7 Plus to iPhone 14 and I am sure it will then last me another 5 to 6 years as performance increments these days are too marginal and I don’t use it for the **** games on App Store that try to bleee your wallet dry, rather use a Nintendo switch.

Can we stop telling people that want to lay the phone down flat to buy a case? I have yet to find a slim case without a camera bump.

Pretty much every case advertises raised edges around the camera for protection. So a case isn’t the solution.

On the 12 I picked up a back protector (basically a screen protector for the rear) that helped somewhat. On the 13 it doesn’t eliminate enough of the bump 😭

How big is the iPhone 15 camera bump going to be with periscope next year  at some point the weight shift to one corner of the phone must be noticeable right
eriscope
The Apple acrylic case has a bump around the bump on my 12 pro max, so it's not flat in the end. Does not bother me, and I usually have the Magsafe wallet attached anyway.
Periscope will allow the camera bump to get smaller I believe.

The sooner they redesign the camera system to get rid of the bump / reduce it the better.
Alas, you can cut camera depth only by cutting the focal length (going ultra-wide vs sorta-wide or by making the sensor smaller (trashing its low-light capability and making regular photos worse)

Or a bit of both

If you are an engineer who has a magic solution to the current laws of Physics, your talents are worth millions and you wouldn’t waste your time here, wishing for the impossible, or merely accepting the worse
