But that's exactly what I mean. I've sold about a dozen of my families iPhone's on Craigslist, it's where people without decent credit and working papers go to buy their iPhones, at least that's the clientele I've always met with sweaty hands of cash at Starbucks.

With the old forehead/chin design all iPhone's looked the same whether you were a cleaning girl or a CEO. The iPhone X changes all that. It's a luxury phone for a luxury buyer. So when people say they have an issue with the notch on the iPhone X they need to understand it's a design feature that differentiates it from the used iPhone's that have flooded the market these past 10 years.
Where do you people come up with this nonsense.

The notch will never be removed, three reasons:

1. It's necessary to have the sensors and camera where they are.

2. It's the iPhone X's signature look, sets it apart from the Craigslist crowd.

3. It's not preventing sales one iota.
No need to be like that sheesh.

I’ve seen some wonderful concepts that show holes in the OLED, rather than a bar. I’d much more appreciate that. Sure it’s impossible to fill a video or game without it getting in the way but visually.... nope just don’t like the notch. I feel it weird having to follow up my post when I was just replying to the threads question.

And technically it did cost one sale - mine. I didn’t even mention sales.... it’s strange to bring that up so.

Finally what is “craigslist crowd” when it’s at home?

I don't want to use iCloud photos, I use Google Photos for my phone pictures, and I like to have a jpg copy of my edited pictures from my camera (A7RII). In Android, it's so easy, you just need to drop a folder in the phone, and that's all. In the iPhone, I'm having a nightmare to sync my edited pics from the camera in their folders using iTunes. First of all, only one level is recognized in the folder structure, but well, that's not such a big issue. The issue is, the synchronisation does not work properly. All the time, iTunes is giving different messages like "the sync could not be completed" or similars. Some days ago I managed to delete the iPhones itunes photo database with the app phoneview in the mac, and for the first time, i could complete a sync. But some days after, i added some more pics to synchronise, and again the issue came.

Sooo. Question. If your image is already on Google Photos, why not just download it to the phone from the Google Drive app instead of syncing via iTunes?
An alternative to syncing with iTunes, is plugging your camera's SD card directly into the iPhone with Apple's camera kit, and importing the photos into the Photos app. Or AirDropping the photos from the Mac

Interesting take on the notch.

Considering you can apply that branding logic to any non-apple product just shows how much more of a poor quality design choice it was if that is, in fact, one of the main functions of the notch.

I'm just used to not having a "notch" on any platform I use to view media so until it shows up on everything else it is a different and annoyingly, mole in the middle of a supermodel's forehead, like experience.

I use google photos for the phone pictures, not for the real photos I take with the camera. Those are not online (google photos is up to 16 mpx and my camera has 42) and I don't want all of them to be online.
But after I edit the pictures, I upload some of them to Facebook for example, and I want them in high quality in the phone. In Android you just need to copy and paste the folder wherever you want, but in the iPhone, it's a nightmare. Supposedly, the itunes sync should work, but it's not working. Seems to be a problem (another one) with iOS 11. Let's see whether they fix it in the future. I don't want to use iCloud.

Putting aside how it makes the iPhone X look unique and distinguishes it from an iPhone 5 et al, the notch has the functional purpose of putting the clock and indicators up and off the screen area. Had Apple just finished off the upper portion of the display with a black line it would have forced the clock and indicators onto the display eating into the content I actually want to see.

Not to mention the bottom area with its cool rounded corners, it needs to cool rounded upper corners to make the overall design work. And if Apple had drawn a line across the top they'd have had to draw a line across the bottom and there it goes, looks just like an old iPhone 5 (yawn) again. Apple did a good job.

I think it was a big mistake to move the power on button from top to side opposite volume buttons. I sometimes inadvertently switch off the phone when I am trying to adjust volume, or using those buttons to take photos. But that is nothing new - bad change introduced with iPhone 6

Am I the only who actually uses the side button like how the pixel squeeze activates the "smart" features?

I don't want to use iCloud photos, I use Google Photos for my phone pictures

I use icloud photo back up, google photos and amazon's offering also. They're all included in services I use anyhow.

Redundancy.

I think this logic is what separates everyone who likes/doesn't mind the notch and people who are annoyed by it.

It sounds like you consider the sides of the notch "ears" or extensions while the annoyed people see the notch as something that is blocking content from being viewed on their beautiful 5.8" screen.

Aside from my previous explanation on why it's annoying to me I also don't agree that the ears are an extension because if they were, then when using the logic of measuring the screen diagonally, the screen would be 5.8" plus the additional size of the ears. The "ears" are included in that 5.8".

That being said I don't agree that the notch puts the clock and indicators up and off of the screen. The notch actually goes into the 5.8" screen area.

Gboard (Google's keyboard) is also an option for those who don't like typing on Apple's. Swipe typing will change your life. ;)

Lol. Boltjames is a fanatic. He goes hard with the praise for sure.

Swipe typing is glorious! I had to uninstall the popular one way back when, because of security concerns.... how is Google’s? Thanks for the heads up regarding fanatics too. I used to be that way when I was younger back when it was Nintendo v Sega.... lol! It’s good to grow out of it.

The home button silhouette tells the world you have an iPhone 5. The new silhouette tells the world you have taste and a lot of money.
Omg your sig is so weird! I’d rather not go into my personal belongings and achievements but why do you feel the need to broadcast yours? What do you gain from it? I ask because sometimes people will invent claims to look better (as they see it) in their eyes. I’m curious over this now since you came into my life.

I’ve never been into flash things and I’ve noticed my peers and others with similar stories to mine don’t care for flashiness either. One of the richest friends of mine is a guy that owns several software houses in Canada and is a multimillionaire. He uses an iPhone 5S as his personal phone as he finds it the best size for him I think.... I never grilled him on it. I think maybe there’s a humbleness to some that makes them great at their jobs. Who knows huh!

The home button iPhone silhouette is iconic. The X not so much.

It reminds me of a bumper phone case. Tbh I can’t believe how wild all this is I didn’t know the discussion was so full of fanboysim. All I did was post I didn’t like it and got pounced on by obsessives! Having been dragged into it yes I agree the original design is much more iconic. Of course it won’t be around forever but neither will the notch design. The moment they can get rid of it they will. It’s a compromise. It’s an acne spot in the middle of ones forehead that ruins a lovely display.

When I first joined MR I thought it was funny/obnoxious how some people listed all of their Apple purchases in their signatures and, at the time, I only had an iPhone so there wasn't much for me to say. So I put in all my other possessions as a parody. It's meant to be satirical but it is true, there is no fabrication.

Google's is great. I went back & fourth between Gboard & Swiftkey. Swiftkey's better at remembering frequently used hashtags in Twitter but other than that, they're both decent.

Throwing slash keyboard in as a swipe/imessage keyboard replacement.

Hasn’t got an update in a while but when it was it blew all other keyboards out the water imo. Has swype built in also.

"Listing possessions" - "Trophy wife".... I don't think calling your wife your possession is that cool, made... (I know it's all a joke)

I don´t like "control center" swiping from the top right.
It´s out of my way. And I use it a lot, and "search" I don´t use at all...

The notch is fine, I never noticed it, and I really thought I would!
So I´m in the camp that thinks it distinguishes the phone

My biggest issue, is the lack of the home button.
This can be described a number of ways.
  • FaceID, it fails more then that I really want it too. I'm used to quickly typing in my passcode at this point but its defniitely slower then TouchID
  • Buying/getting apps. Now on the X I have tap the get button, but then I have to double press the side button and then look and let (or hope) FaceID completes the purchase. On my older phones, it was a lot simpler.
  • Killing apps, what could be more easier then flicking up - definitely a step back on the X imo

then it isn’t satire.

Anyway the problem with the X is the same as with any edge to edge screen, no matter the physical size of the phone - it's harder to reach the very bottom of the phone since you now have a longer thumb reach than you would if it had the lower chin, which acts like a "support" for the bottom edge of the screen.

I kill apps by flicking up - hold your finger on an app for a second and as soon as the (-) sign appears, flick up (without lifting your finger). It’s much quicker than holding and tapping on the minus.
[doublepost=1516656670][/doublepost]Anyway, my problem here is not that some people dislike the notch or the X, it's that they can't seem to accept that some people don't mind and even, shockingly, like the notch.

I really like it. It doesn't bother me even in landscape. Oh, no, the humanity, it cuts a small piece of the video if I stretch it full screen - because the phone is the place where you want the full cinematic experience!

It just, you know, looks cool. I don't think I would mind it being gone one day, but I definitely love, love, love the rounded corners. Rounded corners are so Apple. I like how macOS has slightly rounded corners on each window, I like how notifications on iOS have rounded corners - I just love them (in fact, that's what makes Windows a bit cold to me, those sharp corners). So the notch is the only way to have these rounded corners on an edge to edge screen.... I totally prefer it to any added bezels. It also looks interesting. Apple certainly owned it. I like the functionality in that area (like when the clock gets a green/blue/red background instead of the top bar like on other iPhones) - it almost feels like some bonus space. I know it's just a psychological thing, but it does seem like an extra area rather than a part of the screen: similar to how the Touch Bar feels on the MBP (another very popular thing here on the forum).

Again, perfectly fine to dislike this. But people come here with that "it's a design fail" attitude. That Verge dropout Joshua Topolsky even wrote a whole article about it where he confuses his personal taste with whatever he thinks are objective design principles. Sad.

Funny - I hadn't realised why before you wrote that, but when I went to try it in a store (just like 1 minute and my only experience with it so far), I felt like it was uncomfortable for my thumb to reach down and swipe up to go home. As if the angle I had to twist my thumb to whilst also holding the phone just felt unnatural. This is clearly why

Just got one last Wednesday (1/17). I came from a 6s Plus. The notch doesn't really bother as much as I thought it would. I thought it'd bug me watching videos landscape, but it just frames it like a regular iPhone. Do I miss the real estate of the Plus? I do. Now to the gripes:

1. Why does closing apps require a force touch for the red icon and then swipe away? Just get me to multitasking and let me swipe them away like on regular iPhones. Granted the swipe up gesture is designed for going home, but can't the system differentiate between when you're in the multitasking screen or not?

2. Going back in landscape. On a regular iPhone, when in Safari and wanted to go back a page, I'd just swipe and it would go back. Now my thumb has to go further back to swipe. It's not as fluid. Still getting used to that.

3. FaceID works fine, but as someone stated earlier, it doesn't work first thing in the morning for some reason. It is generally slower than TouchID, but it's fast enough. I don't mind it.

4. Control center being summoned by going to the top right is weird. You don't have to get it precisely in a specific spot on the top right, but you can't be off even by a little to the left.

Those are my gripes. I thought that coming from a Plus would be easier, but since the screen is taller, it's about the same as far as moving the phone up and down my hand to adjust the grip to reach the top, bottom and edges. I rely on reachability a lot. However since it's not as wide as a Plus, it does help day to day. I have about 9 days left to make a decision whether to keep it or return it for a Plus model. As of now, still keeping it, but like 70/30%.

Edit - Maybe a double tap on the home screen to stop the icons from jiggling when re-arranging them instead of having to press done would be an improvement. I thought I'd miss the battery percentage showing on the menu bar, but since the battery life has proven to be great, I don't miss it as much.

I don't see how this is such a massive problem to so many people. You shouldn't close apps unless they're bugging out on you regardless. This is especially evident if you look at what happens when you do close it in the app switcher - the kernel sends SIGKILL to the process. Now how many of you would close your Mac or Linux apps with SIGKILL? I didn't think so. You'd use SIGTERM or something. And even if the apps are still appearing in the app switcher doesn't necessarily mean they're running. Far from.

I'm just a little OCD about it being cluttered. I know it doesn't help anything, but whatever.
