I'm still waiting for them to be able to let an iOS device act as screen/input device for a headless MacMini or similar "home server" box.

There are plenty of 3rd party remote apps that already provide this functionality. In fact, I'm using HippoRemote and Rowmote on my ipad and ipod touch to control my MacMini HTPC. Mouse functions, keyboard input, etc. all from my iOS devices. Very convenient.

My iPod idea

Maybe I'm going out on a limb here, but I wonder if they might go so far as to include a SIM card option in an iPod. Yeah, that'd basically make it a tiny iPad, but think about it. More and more of everything Apple depends on the Cloud, which requires Internet connectivity. Maps, Photo Stream, Find My iPod, Home Sharing, iTunes Match, etc. etc. etc.

It's getting to the point now where capacity of an iPhone or iPad doesn't matter, because your music is simply streamed. Why not do it for the iPod too?

nice and all. but...it's where the iphone is that the money is. "mp3-players" is a shrinking - soon to be dead - market.

Apple has lost the plot... Ipod was about music, not GPS' or cameras. I think the direction ipod has headed in the past few years is totally wrong.

Instead of encouraging more space for higher quality of playback, it has become a superficial music player dressed up in fancy colors and displays. I still use the Classic iPod since it is the only thing that can contain a reasonable amount of Apple lossless songs.

The iPod has in short turned into a non-phone iPhone...

*Is not sure if serious*

You do understand that a good chunk of the appeal of an iPod over an iPhone IS the lack of Data Plan charges. Putting LTE in would basically negate that.

You Europeans and your more diverse cell phone markets, making us Americans jelly of your carefree attitude toward data costs. :p

I am serious, and I'm not European. A $30/$40/mo data plan would still be a lot cheaper than my AT&T voice and forced iPhone plan.

Sounds like it's really the ipod touch that's getting the big upgrades/star of the show (and this from some one who is mainly interested in the iphone cause that's probably what I'm getting).

i wanted a SIM in the ipod touch for the last 2 years... it's too late to care now.

and this new ipod touch i don't see what's so special just a gps?
nexus7 has gps and so does samsungs galaxy player (ipod touch clone)
i've always thought it slack that apple never included the GPS.

Man, all they need to do is add an LTE model and I don't need a phone anymore.

I wonder about LTE (4G) plan like iPad 3G. no-contract plan. Many deaf users don't need voice plan. Cheap data plan than iPhone data plan.

So with no apparent upgrades to the Classic, what is the non-Apple alternative for large capacity music players?

They know that.

Which is why they won't do that.

YES YES YES! Ugh, waiting 2 years for an update was painful...heck, the 4 was dated 2 years ago, basically 3 year old hardware.

But GPS! That is AWESOME. TomTom's iOS GPS software is fantastic, but having to use it on a $630, 10" iPad I don't normally have with me is less so. This'll be worth it just for GPS, if that's true!

And obviously *FINALLY* getting A9s is awesome, as will be it hopefully getting at least 512MB.

I gotta say the GPS is unlikely. The problem is that Apple has been getting the GPS antenna/chipset as a bundle deal in the 3G/4G cell chips, not in the Wi-Fi only board. To include GPS that means there has to have been a shift in that part chain which I haven't seen any news on by anyone. As much as I'd like to see true satellite based GPS show up in the Wi-Fi only versions of Apple products, I just can't believe its going to happen.

Maybe all the wifi only products go away, and we only have 3G/4G enabled devices? That gives you GPS even without a Cellular Data plan, and a simplified model range, which means more economies of scale. Sounds very Tim Cook to me...

So its basically a Nexus 7, only a third the size for the same price?

Probably more expensive, though larger capacity, and they're really separate types of products...one fits in your pocket, the other doesn't.

Yes, but Apple has TomTom's awesome software available...no Android device does (yet...I think supposedly coming finally this year?) Having GPS and nothing to use it isn't particularly exciting.

And there is no true Android competitor to the Touch-yes, Samsung finally makes small Android devices, but they're not supported with OS updates. There needs to be a Nexus 4 or Nexus 5 or something from Google to have a true competitor.

Sweet - I don't need a phone and love my iPod Touch, but the one thing it is missing is GPS. I play a lot of golf and there are some great golf GPS apps out there. I also have an outdated portable navigation in my car.

If this rumor is in indeed true, I'm buying and giving my kids my current iPod Touch. :D

Tom Tom is not all that good, and there are multiple superiorAndroid Nav apps alternatives.

too late for me, I wanted to buy a 4th gen ipod touch 2 years ago but just didnt feel like it was worth it as a new toy for me(still playing with 1st gen). I was hoping for a 3-5mp camera then, and since it couldnt even replace my crappy P&S camera i passed.

Now data plans are getting easier to manage with shared plans, ill prob just hold out for an iphone sometime this next year for my next upgrade.

Im sure they wont have a problem selling these but i do think apple fell short a bit the way they staggered the tech so much between the iphone and ipod touch when it doesnt seem like they had to.

Actually the one rumor about all this I DON'T like is it being thinner. Thinner? It's already way thinner than it needs to be. I'd like it at least 2x as thick as the current one, and fill that sucker with battery. Of course I'd really like non sealed, non proprietary batteries, but I know THAT'S not happening. But 2-4x the thickness, filled with battery would be awesome. I hate having to worry about battery all the time with Apple's products.

Like what? TomTom's software is awesome, and they're waaaaay ahead of competitors-years in fact.

But they don't work out of the box. In other words you have a fresh MacMini and a fresh iPad with no initial setup on either.

You can't just plug the iPad in and let it act as both screen and keyboard/mouse. I have a MacMini that is normally headless. If something goes wrong enough I have to go get a monitor and keyboard when I lose wireless access.

What's missing is the ability to physical plug in an iOS device and drive the Mac. Same deal can apply to the AppleTV in a way.

Hmm...use an iOS device as like a remote display for a Mac that's normally not connected to a monitor? I like that idea... I've got Folding @ Home running on some systems like that...

I get why Apple would want to add colour to the iPod Touch but I can pretty much add colour with an external case. I just hope that the easily scratched back shinny plastic is replaced with something that isn't so easily scratched.

I'll will definitely be waiting several years to acquire one of these hopefully wonderful upgrades just like I did with my current 4th gen. iPod Touch. (got it refurbished last year).

Ugh, I've never had a touch LAST that long lol.

I don't really understand how the colors will work, but I'm sick of black, and I don't like the shiny, scratchy backs. Hmm...wonder if it won't be metal? A good plastic might be both cheaper and more durable. I'd be fine with that.

I'm extremely fed up with my iPT4. If the iPT5 doesn't have a GOOD camera and at least 1GB of RAM, I'll probably not buy it.

And by good camera, I mean at least what the iPhone 4 had. I don't even want it for use as a dedicated camera (I've got my D7000 for that), just for the occasional on-the-go pictures. The <1MP current camera is horrible for pictures.

I'm already not sure if I'd even buy the new one because of the new dock connector. I already have multiple rather expensive accessories based on the old connector, if there's no adapter from new to old then I'll have to reconsider getting a new iPod, because I really don't want to ditch my accessories.
