The only reason Apple is releasing this is because they're targeting young kids to subscribe to their ecosystem (and move from Android). Apple doesn't care if she's good or not, they care about how to make more and more money. It's never enough. Personally, Lorde is 1000 times more talented (which Billie Eilish takes a lot from) but Apple TV wasn't around to make documentaries about her.

Another 'documentary' (hagiography?) to stoke the cult-of-personality. I went through goth and Em0 and this is yet another similar trope.

I find the young demos of Kate Bush much more interesting - and musically within the B.E. genre Fiona Applegate is, IMO superior but clearly not marketable to that core 13-18 demographic...

To me it's insane that we idolise 18year old musicians for their accomplishments - but ok.

Not to sound like a fuddy duddy, but does the world really need a documentary (let alone a $25 million one) about a teenager with a single album? I mean, I think maybe we could manage to remain in the dark about her several minutes of life between her meteoric rise and the present day. 🥱

is this a documentary because there is a extraordinary story to her life or is it to promote her further to sell more records? like what's is the angle here? sexual abuse? failed rehab? tragic events?
I think the “angle” is that she started on SoundCloud and now, 5 years later—at the age of 18—she’s is the youngest person and second person ever to win the four main Grammy categories – Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Album of the Year – in the same year.

According to a two second Google search, anyway 🤷‍♂️

She’s been famous for 5 minutes and there’s already a documentary about her?
To be fair, a documentary isn't the same as a memoir or even a biopic. Even people who aren't popular have documentary films about them or something that they have done or do.

Love MASH. But Billie is a fan of The Office. So maybe everybody should share their favorite Office episode. It’s hard hard to pick just one but: The Injury; Booze Cruise; Casino Night; Grief Counseling; Business School; Dinner Party.

Come to think of it, if a large portion of this documentary were spent on Billie being a fan of The Office, that would be pretty interesting.
Mine would be The Convict.

You understand, though, that there’s approximately seventeen million things one could fill in the blank of “does the world really need a _____”, besides this? And a lot of them would be less worthy than this. Including a lot that have already been filmed and released.

Wikipedia has a page for the awards she’s received. It goes on for... a while. It includes a pile of Grammys. She’s not just a little bit popular, she’s something of a phenomenon. Yes, she has one album. At one point, she had 14 tracks in the US Hot 100, 12 of them from that one album. That’s pretty impressive.

I’m not the target demographic for her music. But I really like some of the things I’ve heard from her. I wouldn’t mind a documentary about her. If you’re gong to make a solid case for this documentary being “not really needed”, maybe you should start by tackling thousands of more frivolous documentaries that have already been made?

Is this a thread full of grumpy whingy boomers or what??? Billie Eilish and her brother are unbelievably talented, and if you can't see that, you're already half deaf and half dead.

Corporate social engineering. Make the kids feel depressed and bored and dead. The whole top 10 same thing. Kids are much easier to manipulate if they act like the walking dead.

Remember when the top 10 had music from every genre and it was mostly uplifting stuff. Louder than life personalities, very independent people with their own style, everyone unique. Even though some were young they had mature adult minds and could think for themselves.

Yeah that was a long time ago.
first of all, just by reading this, I can tell you’re a boomer.
Secondly, if you honestly don’t think that there has been terrible music that is flooded the hot 100 since it’s inception back in 1958, you’re absolutely ridiculous. Go back and actually look at the number ones from the 1960s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and the 2000s. Of course there are classics that hit number one, and the top 10. But there is also hours, and hours, and hours of complete garbage and gunk that has been forgotten over the years that has landed on the charts.
I mean hell, Kenny G hit The top 10 in 1986 with a boring saxophone solo song that’s basically elevator music.
In terms of diversity, how about we go down the top 10 right now for this week.
#1 is BTS ( 방탄소년단) ' Dynamite. An upbeat Korean pop boy band dance song.
You mentioned that there are no louder than life personalities on the charts anymore, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Example, our number two this week, Cardi B’s WAP, which is a rude, crude, explicit, and loud s*x song with some of the least radio friendly lyrics I’ve heard hit the top ten in years.
#3 is Justin Bieber - Holy ft. Chance The Rapper. A gospel influenced love R&B/rap song.
#4 is Drakes laugh now cry later, admittedly a boring song, but if you want to talk about an absolute mega star, anything drake touches hits the top 10.
#5 is 24kGoldn - Mood, A guitar slathered modern R&B jam.
DaBaby’s Rock Star is #6, another guitar influenced R&B rap jam.
#7 is Blinding Lights by The Weeknd, a full 80s throw back with synthesizer keyboard passages and a post disco beat.
#8 is Harry Styles Watermelon Sugar, clearly a 70s soft rock homage.
#9 is Savage Love by Jason Derulo, a Latin influenced track, and #10 is I Hope by Gabby Barrett, a country song.
In terms of music styles, this is actually extremely diverse. We’ve got 80s synth pop, 70s soft rock, Korean dance, Latin, hip-hop, R&B, country, etc.
One of the main criticisms that boomers give modern music is that they used to many writers and producers. Well, Billie Eilish has one producer, her brother, and the two of them right, produce, mix, master, and release all of their music. It’s just them too, in her childhood bedroom.
Compare this to someone like... let’s say... Elvis Presley, who rarely actually wrote any music, and the majority of his hits were other peoples songs.
Also, calling today’s music repetitive is completely irrelevant. The silver convention had two hits in 1975 and 1976. Both songs are over four minutes, but the both of them only use a combined 12 words. They’re both extremely repetitive. Repetitive music has been going on pretty much since the beginning of time. So that’s nothing new.
So any boomer saying that today’s music is nowhere near as good as yesterday‘s music is just full of them self. First of all, when it comes to music, quality is subjective.
And secondly, the practices in the music Industry that you claim ruin current music have been going on for decades.

does her brother have a name? i keep hearing billie and her brother but no one calls him by name. like is is unbelievably talented but not talented enough to be more than billie's brother.

and i don't think talent is in question here. what's in question is what makes her an interest in a documentary.

What’s so special about her? Actually next year no one will be talking about her anymore because someone else will take her place as the music industry’s next crush.
Well she had her first hit in 2016, and it’s been four years since then, and she still here

Ever since the 60s, there have been documentaries that accompany albums. They don’t have to be about something, except for the making of each album, or touring the album, or something like that.
This isn’t really a documentary about her life, but it’s a snapshot of a place and time. If she continues to be wildly successful, and 30 years from now she’s on her 24th album, and she still has fans, I’m sure a lot of them will be more than happy to look back on this documentary, just to see where she was at back in 2020, right after her first full length album. It’s not interesting for everyone, but for some people, it’s very interesting.

Yeah it is a bit weird, but "their" "band name" is Billie Eilish, so that's the name that's used, even though it's a strong collaboration. So yep, no one really remembers his name.
