Take some steel wool to this puppy and rub off all the black. Then it will be much harder to see any scratches. :D

That was the point I was trying to make is it is possible to have high quality anodizing and on a product far less costly than the iPhone. Many here have no knowledge of that. Again, time will tell if it is a major problem or not.

I had am E2D roll off the bed of my truck (forgot it). I found it five hours later in an intersection on a 4 lane road. Didn't lose its shape, scratched to hell, the Pyrex glass was intact and best all, it fired up and never skipped a beat. It then grew legs one day and I never saw it again.

1. Taking a hammer to the touchscreen affects it negatively

2. Inserting the new iPhone 5 in a 600 degree oven is not good

3. Dropping the phone from 35,000 feet is detrimental

4. Placing the phone in the center of a campfire is conducive to noticeable excess heat

5. Swimming with the iPhone 5 in your swim trunks increases moisture inside the phone

But most people will carry the phone in their pocket or purse and it may be susceptible to scratching. Your analogy is off the wall.

Guess what?????

My car scratches if i drag my keys over it and look after your property and all will be good.

Guess what?! This has been said 218 times already in this very thread! Yet people still ignore how EASY it is to scratch the iPhone 5 EVEN IF you take care of it - many being marked straight out of the box!

That said just opened mine and it's perfect at the moment :D

Regardless of how stupid this article is, I am happy that I have a case to throw on it right away, cause I always have intention of selling my stuff, and the better it looks, the more money I get back

Very true. I do the same thing.
Besides that I know few people who just doesn't care a their phone last very little because of dropping it and breaking scratching.
Buying a case is always a smart investment.

They do make a high quality product.

Was it the outer band and/or the rear?

Again, all these "My facebook friend", "My buddies wife", "My aunts third adopted Nigerian child's original birth mothers anonymous donor's facebook friend"

Let's see some damn pictures...

You guys can call it what you want... but we did go a step backwards.

The back of an 4 or 4s will not scratch as fast as any aluminium. Of course it will scratch eventually, but aluminium will scratch faster.

The moment I saw it was anodised I told people that this is crap.. I got plenty of anodised Lian-Li pc's, and you need to be REALY REALY careful..

I my humble (apple love) opinion.... This is a bad decision, Glass was way WAY better. Besides... I don't like the look of it, but thats an opinion...

how the hell are these things coming scratched out of the box?

I don't doubt it, but find it damn hard to believe.

Record Breaking profits! :p

Some stuff does, I recall my XBOX's and PS3's and other computers had little spots if I looked hard enough. For the price Apple wants it hopefully is minimal.

I agree. Many people seem to go off topic. We all know that everything will get scratched eventually, but its entirely unacceptable that a product should get scratched hours after being opened. This is very concerning about the products durability.

Power Drilling the iPhone Front Glass will Crack the Glass

I also discovered if I placed a fully charged power drill on the front glass of my new iPhone 5 and turned it on, the glass will first scratch, a hole then appears and then presto a crack appears across the iPhone.

What a piece of crap!

I also discovered if I try to flush it down the toilet, it doesn't go because it's to big!

These non-stories are so stupid. The only case I ever used for my iPhone 4 was the Apple bumper. There is not one scratch on it, never cracked it or needed to replace it.

I just don't get it, are people really that careless, reckless and stupid?

I get it.

It's a purchased item that can break - duh.

However, resale value is a big deal to me...

One person on another forum got straight to the matter and took keys and a SIM card tray pin to the back and edges of an in-store iPhone 5 unit with these results.

1zoykg7.jpg

I don't believe this at all and for the following reasons.

1 If it is in a store than why is the background not the usual table.

2 It is way too dark for it to be a store, flash is used.(intentionally made it dark so can not see it's fake)

3 It seems that the background is leather, and worn out, not in an Apple store.

4 Where did he get the SIM card tray pin from, I find it hard to believe anyone is carrying such a pin.

I think it's someone who just doesn't like Apple for whatever reason, plenty of "Enemies".

And even if this is true, that person is a complete moron.

Seriously?

I don't get why everyone's making a big deal about the back of the iPhone 5...
I for one will be suing all of the key manufacturers for making my keys too sharp.

I can't believe some moron vandalized that phone. And on top of it... the amount of derp that is involved with concluding that, yea, a key or other metallic object will in fact scratch almost anything.

We have a real scientist at work here ladies and gentlemen.

Tune in next month when we run the same test on a Lumia 920 and are shocked to see it also suffers the same fatal scratching flaw.

After looking at the side of the ip5 in the posted image, I'm not entirely sure that's scratching and not a white reflection point.

Just a thought.

I am reading dozens of posts of people defending Apple. If Apple's manufacturing engineers are so inexperienced that they couldn't make it more scratch resistant, they should have just hired Ruger or S&W for metal manufacturing consulting. Both of those firearms manufactures know how to adequately anodize aluminum to the nth degree. Of course someone would find out that Apple worked with a firearms manufacturer and their public image would evaporate.

I wouldn't want to be a Quality or Sustaining Engineer at Apple right now
