case makers will be happy ...

shame that, shiny new toy needs to be put in a ugly case. hopefully powersupport releases back screen protector.

Yeah, you would think that Apple considered that people may not like the idea of the aluminum back getting scratched up, but maybe they did not, I don't know. Maybe they forgot about the original iPhone, which would be weird. I thought about this when I heard that the new iPhone was going back to aluminum. One thing they got right with glass is the scratch resistance, however galss is extremely susceptible to shattering. Oh, and the plastic ones cracked. What's left to use that is affordable?

Better paint on the aluminum shell...

There is a big difference between being able to take a lot of abuse, and not being tarnished one little bit.

You can drop your phone and scratch it all you want. Chances are, it will still work as well as the day you bought it. Just that because of the abuse it is receiving, it may/will have scratches and dents here and there. But it should in no way cause it to function any less properly. I bet it's practically the same with just about every phone out there, just that Apple is receiving more flak because it's cool to bash apple these days, even for things that aren't necessarily apple's fault.

And why were there scratches? Because apparently, someone thought it would be a good idea to damage it with keys!

i don't condone what the kid did but we must be reticent to the fact that even removing the phone from in and out of our pockets will damage the painted chamfer.

That isn't abuse.

That will hurt resale my friend.

I am reading dozens of posts of people defending Apple. If Apple's manufacturing engineers are so inexperienced that they couldn't make it more scratch resistant, they should have just hired Ruger or S&W for metal manufacturing consulting. Both of those firearms manufactures know how to adequately anodize aluminum to the nth degree. Of course someone would find out that Apple worked with a firearms manufacturer and their public image would evaporate.

I wouldn't want to be a Quality or Sustaining Engineer at Apple right now

Excellent post. It is quite possible to make a most durable anodized finish. And I'd venture to guess that Apple makes more profit per unit than Ruger or S&W.

Would love to wait for some experiences saying that the white one is better. But I have to decide NOW between black and white.

Isn't there already something like a bumper case for iPhone 5? I love the Apple bumper case of my iPhone 4.

Scratching is inevitable, but having a contrasting colour underneath is enough to warrant using another material. All the components have been fitted into the shell too, so not easy to change.

This is really poor considering the price.

apple makes such beautiful phones, shame you have to put them into thick, ugly cases to stop them from looking trashed after a few weeks. I can't remember the last time I saw an iPhone that was out of a case.

Keep paying those Apple premiums!

It's amazing the stuff people will put up with just because it's Apple.

This is a major concern, basically forces you to use a case if you want to keep your phone mint. It's going to be very hard to resell your phone if it's scratched all to hell, even if you "babied it".

Of course, fanboys will try to blow this off but like all the other problems the iPhone has had over the years. "meh, no big deal".

"Black iPhone 5 anodized aluminum susceptible to scratch?" Needs another article to follow it:

"All other phones more susceptible to scratching because they are made of crappy plastic!"

No one is forcing you to buy an iPhone, or any product for that matter that is made of metal, which is vulnerable to scratching. My car is covered with scratches and I paid much more for it than any iPhone.

Dude you just don't get it. I own every recent apple product that's been released including rmb, iPad 3,4s and a 27 iMac. And I'm going to still buy a white iPhone 5 today. I'm actually on line as we speak. It's about sacrificing quality for a better design. I would rather them charge $20 more for the phone and use a better coating material them having me have to look at the coating vanish before my eyes over time. It just baffles me. This is where Steve jobs comes in. He would have nipped this in the butt after the first testers experienced the wear, cause now if this turns out to be a issue that every device experiences then Samsung and every other company is going to bash apple every chance they get. This will make the national news and could really hurt apple. I don't care what any body says, but if this phone scratches very easy then apple is so wrong for releasing it like that. I just googled iPhone 5 photos and even in some pictures where there showing off the phone you can see scratches all over the metal part of the phone. It does not look good at all. And it's a shame cause I really think the design of the phone is amazing and the best looking phone I ever seen. I can't wait to get one in my hands and see in a week how it looks. I just hope I'm not disappointed.

ok, why don't you repeat the experiment on your iPhone 4 or 4S and see if you get the same result. you won't

Actually, the aluminum-colored aluminum on my i4 is worn to a shinier aluminum color in places. That's what happens to metal.

Darn, the same thing happened when I did it to my bosses $375,000 Lamborghini Aventador. You just can't get acceptable products these days, no matter how much you pay.

Seriously, what is Apple thinking? We mined Unobtainium since 2009. Use that!
This is a deal breaker. I'll return 100 iPhones I stole today.

How dare that employee scratch our sacred jesus demo phone. Put him in jain throw away the key and have judge koh fine him 3 billion dollars for this autracity. On a serious note its just a freaking phone you morons.

lol! That is why you buy a protective case for your phone regardless of make or model. If you want to have it naked and flash it around beware that it could be violated. Simple fact.

The media.

Humans...

Seriously. Asking the question "Who does that kind of stuff" is dumb.

I see dummies every day. High functioning morons. That's the society we live in...

We live in an effed up world and some jack hole scratching a phone is superfluous to me.
