That is absolutely ridiculous. I want to see how well a car's paint job holds up, so it is perfectly fine for me to go in and key one of the floor models??
It absolutely is vandalism. I don't think he needed to scratch giant circles on the back, he might as well have scratched a smiley face in it, or drawn an elaborate picture.

disagree, but ok.
keys (am I remembering right?) sometimes get mixed with a phone...maybe not the SIM pin. and thus they could get scratched with keys.

as far as claims to smash a TV with a hammer. people (in my neck of the woods) don't normally hammer near TVs on a daily basis. perhaps if someone used a key near a door on a floor model car and it slipped and hit the paint and scratched it...i look at cars and see from use people's nails are marring the area near door handles. if someone in a car dealership rubber their hands nails near the door handle to see how well it held up fine.

So I guess when you purchase something that has a demo (display) unit you simply look?

Sure the person went a tad too far I think but nothing that screams VANDALISM like some on here are crying. I went to look for a kitchen table the other month and read reports on how well the top painted surface held up, so I was running over it with my nails and using the chair that was with it to see if "everyday use", granted slightly sped up and thus a tad more forceful, would bother the piece. I figure if I am paying a decent amount of money i want to ensure the piece wont be destroyed within a few uses. *I guess I don't make enough money to not care how something i buy will handle* if the person in the story used a hammer on the glass or aluminum to see if it cracked or dented, that would be/could be vandalism, however, this is from an everyday object that may normally be in close contact with the phone and from a device to be used with the phone.

I had a few small nicks on the band right out of the box. I sharpie fixed the problem.

Steve Jobs is rolling over in his grave.

Other than that, this phone is amazing!

seriously, a sharpie fixed it?

Mind posting images?

For the price you pay, yeah, it is horrible.

The question is how susceptible the phone is to scratching with normal wear, and I have to guess that ifixit did a little test and found it did scratch easily. Normal wear will most likely scratch all the chamfers.

I'm not defending scratches. But if I took a key to the back of my iPad I'm sure that would scratch too. I just think its too early to tell if this is a major manufacturing issue or not. I've seen some posts here from people who got a perfect phone out of the box and others that didn't. Maybe there were manufacturing issues with the first batch of phones produced.

I agree. While I would normally say, bringing up Steve is inappropriate.

One would have to think, if they couldn't get the black to hold on there, he would have said just make it the same metal as the white one until we figure this out someday.

This phone is going to look like those Titanium PowerBooks but sooner rather than later.

Let me put this into perspective for you. Hypothetically speaking you own a small pawn shop, you are in the back and you come out to the floor and see a possible customer scratching a fine antique up with their keys, to see how durable it is. You let them go about their business? No. You take action, and in your mind want to punch them in the face.

Trust me I try. But I can't tell you how many time I have walked out the grocery store and noticed where someone has dinged my door.:(

Depending on where you live, that is very possible. Less populated areas, you can choose stores that have huge lots and not too many customers and park in the back.

If you're in a big city, there are likely no spots like that to choose. Enjoy the handling of that car nevertheless!

Why all the hate? This is important to know! I DO sometimes accidentally put my phone in my pocket with my keys, I do keep change in my pocket. I don't want these uglier than usual scratches on my $400 phone from normal wear and tear. I was hoping I would be able to use this iPhone without a case for once, to show off how pretty the new design is, but I guess that wouldn't be very smart.

This!

And I bet the same people acting like its not a big deal, will be feeling that burn once they get that first scratch or chip on their precious iPhone 5 thats barely a few weeks old!:p

....the black ones smell like licorice and the white ones smell like coconut. Kidding. First off, these phones will scratch no matter what. I just got my white one delivered and its the exact aluminum used for the Macbook Pros. And these Macbooks do scratch if you're not careful.

I'm putting mine in a small sock for now until I get myself a good cover.

Yeah, but you'd hardly notice it on the white as you do on the black.

Sorry, but you are wrong. We all know Apple will still continue to be successful, as will their phones and tablets. They've successfully recovered from mistakes in the past...

Apple will offer free cases as the band-aid. Once maps gets fully functional, it will blow away Google maps.

And do you really believe that Google will sit idly by for the next few years as Apple attempts to get a functional map app?

Yes, the man who led the company as it doubled it's stock value needs to go!

Stupid!

If you really think that Tim cook is the reason apple's stock is where it is then you have the slightest clue about apple. All Tim cook is doing is riding Steve jobs's wave. They could have had you in charge and you would probably have the stock at 750. Steve jobs created such a following for apple that despite his passing, they were going to sell millions of units. And because of Steve Jobs, whatever apple decides to do about this, apple will still sell millions of units. But I can guarantee you that with mishaps like this, over time, not even Steve jobs legacy could save them. Just can't believe a member here for years posted a reply like that. SMH.

If they got scratched in production that easily, the display units are all going to be beat to hell in a month. Every person with a ring on will put a scratch on it… Who care, just enjoy the phone. You are going to buy a new one in two years anyway.

The comments about vandilism are pretty funny. Especially the guy saying he would have fought the person lol. You better run back to the mall and stand guard from these damn kids!!

i will be getting a white one just to avoid this wear and tear issue..

I am seriously starting to wonder what kind of testing apple does on its phones.. brushed metal is a no brainer fro a phone that needs to be durable

Selling millions of aesthetically questionable iPhone 5's in days.

Apple. Putting the "con" in Foxconn. ;)

I have to hold my white 4S up to a light at a weird angle to see any sign of scratching and it's almost a year old.

EXACTLY! I've got a 4, only use a case about half the time, and I can't see a single scratch unless I do the same. It's practically flawless! And yes, I'm not always vigilant about putting my keys or coins in the same pocket, and it still looks great.

Yeah, I'm a "fanboy," and right about now, I'm VERY concerned about this. I want the new phone and will probably get it, but this ****'s unacceptable. Apologists are in denial I think.

Look, if the edges are worn and scratched outta the damn box, that's some serious ****!

maybe they should have included a force-field along with the projection keyboard and holographic display :)

That was the point I was trying to make. It is possible to have high quality anodizing and on a product far less costly than the iPhone. Many here have no knowledge of that. Again, time will tell if it is a major problem or not.

My Executive Elite E2e is about 8 years old and looks new. This is the quality Apple should have gone for...not what we ended up with. My black phone is a good one but I'm strongly thinking of changing out to white.
