I look at it like my aluminum aftermarket wheels, anodized black can scratch and fade over time, and beats chipping from painted wheels in my personal opinion.

personally i'm not too bothered by it, it'll get a shield and a cover

I wonder if the side of the phone and the bevel is too small to create proper adhesion, thus chips, flecks, etc

Tim cook has to go. Somebody has to take the fall. This is 110% unacceptable.

I think it will along the lines of "The CEO of iPhone Introductions Past":

This is the Apple share price when I left it to you ($500)... this is as it is now ($700)... this is what it will be ($7)... it's not too late to change your ways Tiiiim Cooooook..."

Oh here we go, first we have excuses for the Maps fk up, now all the fan kiddies wanna make excuse for the shoddy durability that has always been a trait of iPhones. Apple has always been about form over function. We all know this. We also know the fan kiddies just don't care. When android phones were thinner and lighter, it meant cheap phones that were too light. Because iPhone users here have repeatedly said they want to be able feel the phone in their pocket. They didn't want a phone that was so thin and light that it felt like it would snap in half. But NOWWWWW....they love thin, light phones. Because it's just so unreal and amazing.

Form over function??? I am terribly confused by this statement. I was forced to use an Android phone for about 2 years while I waited for the iPhone to expand to new networks. I assure you, function is not something that is a weakness of the iPhone.

Actually was just looking at it and they may have made the scratches themselves, but it's not spelled out.
I'm not defending scratches but there's a different between having scratches out of the box and taking a key/coin/sim card and intentionally scratching your phone. That's like getting a new car and running your key across the door to see if it scratches. I mean seriously what do people expect is going to happen?

A scratch? Oh dear Lord, the horror of it.

For the price you pay, yeah, it is horrible.

The question is how susceptible the phone is to scratching with normal wear, and I have to guess that ifixit did a little test and found it did scratch easily. Normal wear will most likely scratch all the chamfers.

I have to hold my white 4S up to a light at a weird angle to see any sign of scratching and it's almost a year old.

Why all the hate? This is important to know! I DO sometimes accidentally put my phone in my pocket with my keys, I do keep change in my pocket. I don't want these uglier than usual scratches on my $400 phone from normal wear and tear. I was hoping I would be able to use this iPhone without a case for once, to show off how pretty the new design is, but I guess that wouldn't be very smart.

No, he's right. Apple have repeatedly crossed the "form over function" line. For example their non-replaceable battery that makes the phone slightly thinner. Glass backs that don't scratch but make the phone heavier and more fragile, etc, etc. also see the "Cube".

guess Zagg will be selling a lot of back covers for these. I would be pissed if I got one and it got all scratched up from normal use. The white model has silver aluminum so I am guessing it should be fine then. Perhaps Apple was testing this thing inside a case again LOL

So much for the "beautiful" iPhone 5. I'll stick with my iPhone 4S, thank you very much.

X2

I thought apple made the best products? Even if you don't take keys too it will wear off slowly. I have make products that that's happened to. Looks like apple isn't as great as they should be

Pretty typical responses for this site :)

--Should that guy have scratched up an in store model with his keys? Of course not. Not only was it vandalism,...

--telling someone you scratched something with a key doesn't mean anything. I can scratch all sorts of things deliberately with a key.

--However... the point of all of this is that *allegedly* the phone scratches very easily, which I'm sorry if true, is not ok. Apple and its customers obviously care about aesthetics. They go out of the way to make the phone look nice anodizing it in the first place, and a lot of people appreciate that sort of thing. So, it looking great so long as you ensconce it in a display case or wrap it in a cover of some sort so that you can never see it is not really acceptable.

I have a 4S. I've never put it in a case. I often carry it in the same pocket with my keys and a pocket knife. It looks brand new aside from the fingerprints, which I can simply wipe off. That's what I want from a phone I'm paying this kind of money for. Especially coming from Apple.

So I don't understand the attitude here. (Well, ok, that's not true. I certainly have a handle on the typical response from people from this site... both extremes.)

People scratching up store models? Not ok.

People being upset that if you deliberately take a key to something, it'll show marks? Not ok.

People being upset if their phone scratches ridiculously easily? Nothing wrong with that.

To all the people talking freaking out about the guy scratching the phone. What do you think these black iPhones display units are going to look like after every 8 year old kid in the mall has tossed them around a few times? They get slid around on hard counters all day. People with rings are going to be holding them all day. Honestly, who gives a crap…

So by saying the phone will not scratch without a key or major effort is idiotic. If you wear any ring and use it, it will get scratched to all hell. I can go look at my first iPhone to remind me of this. Displays are going to get scratched. Hell, I saw a guy test the iPhone 4S back on his titanium wedding ring… Yea, big scratch. This phone will not stay flawless without a case, especially not the display units in the store.

Scratch-n-sniff

....the black ones smell like licorice and the white ones smell like coconut. Kidding. First off, these phones will scratch no matter what. I just got my white one delivered and its the exact aluminum used for the Macbook Pros. And these Macbooks do scratch if you're not careful.

I'm putting mine in a small sock for now until I get myself a good cover.

I'm curious, do the Samsung or HTC phones not scratch when taken a key or other sharp metal object to them? This is getting ridiculous. Seems they are nitpicking at every little aspect. It's not perfect, NO apple phone launch was perfect. if you don't want the phone, don't buy it.
