That sucks, but I use a case on my iPhones anyway. It looks and feels great naked but I like my smartphone too much to risk damaging it, therefore I encase it ASAP.

It's highly likely that if you ever take the case off, you will see the damaged edge. Not only taking the case on and off, but any little debris that gets in the edge, will damage it.

Get it exchanged if it came out of the box like that. I would.

Smaller screen then the competition, less features then the competition, defective native apps (ie maps) and now substandard parts and finishes ......

This will be the last successful iPhone launch. The competition has finally passed the iPhone.

What competition? Wp8 possibly, surely you aren't talking about driod?

Did anyone actually load the text that accompanies the image of the scratched iPhone? The guy works in the shop where the phone is on demo!! He may have been testing it for customers' benefit - let's not jump the gun and call for prosecution!!!

What a Surprise!

Someone takes keys and deliberately scratches a phone and everyone is worried and surprised at the results ???

Folks if you take keys to a 2 million dollar bugatti, guess what will happen ? Good grief!!!!

And that fellow should pay for the phone.

Wow, good idea, let's go down to the Ferrari, Porsche and Rolls Royce stores and see if my keys will scratch them...WTF?

I see you have not bothered to read the thread...... so the other example is, would you be pissed if your Ferrari, Porches or Rolls Royce was delivered scratched???? I WOULD BE!

whoa whoa

all those guys who is defending APPLE, get your iPhone 5 and then reply here...

Check out the new iPod touch once it arrives...

definitely APple could have gone to use some other material to avoid this issue.

I'll be sure to not scratch my phone...What is the issue here? Phones can be scratched. Oh the humanity.

The fact is if you do the same thing to the 4 and 4s, it doesn't scratch.

So to me that's an issue. It's very feasible that you may put your phone and your keys in the same pocket at some point. Removing your phone only to find it's scratched is a bad thing.

No, what everyone is worried about is not that a phone is getting scratched, all my cell phones get scratched to all hell. What everyone is worried about is that on the black model, the scratches are way more apparent than on past devices because the black color is only on the surface and as such, scratches show the underlying shiny silver color which makes for quite the contrast.

Yes, I think it's been confirmed he was the OWNER of the shop, and therefore OWNED the phone. He was performing a service for his customers and should be applauded, not attacked.

I, for one, am glad this was posted because now I get to make a better informed decision about buying this thing.

Like I said, I have an iPhone 4 and have had it since its launch. No visible scratches unless held to special light. Clearly THIS phone won't be nearly as durable.

This picture was taken with a Galaxy S3 as well. They didn't even bother removing the Exif data. I haven't dug further for GPS info...

no problem!

I use Sharpies to fill in the black on all sorts of things. It's permanent, applies easily, doesn't glob ... though on a phone that's held very closely it would probably be more noticeable.

Is the rear on the white model anodized? I understand the bands are "bare" aluminum.

It seems that the new case design is as good as the new maps!

I'm still wondering why they changed stainless steel and glass, for this anodized alluminium coating.

My iPhone 4 with two years of daily use, after cleaning the finger prints with a cloth, looks absolutely as brand new.

iPhone 4/4S stainless steel doesn't have any weird coating that can peel off, and looks always great. Glass is extremelly more resistant to scratches than metal.

It's all a bunch of baloney

I just got my black one and it looks awesome. I was on the fence about black vs white, which was only exascerbated by all the scuffgate nonsense. But one look at the black and I knew I had made the right choice. I take care of my phone, so I'm not concerned about it getting scratched. Both phones will get scratched if not cared for. The black just looks better. Much better than it does in pictures. And I think just the opposite for the white. It looks awesome in pictures, but in person, it looks, meh.

It's not about it being scratch proof. It's when the phone scratches the top color comes off and your black iPhone is now a two tone iPhone. I can already see in about 6 months where people will sand off all the black to reveal a new metal iPhone. It's really funny how people re brushing this off. And for is to be coming from the ultimate fanboy is a lot. This all boils down to the captain of the ship not doing a good job. Yes Steve would probably have not allowed this. Apple really needs a new CEO. Tim cook is the best at what he does and that's the supply chain. Let him focus on that nd get someone who has at least a tenth of the strive for perfection that Steve did. And on a side note I don't know how the hell that map app was released

so you're blaming a bad decision made by the new CEO? and yea, maybe steve wouldn't have allowed this yea. but steve also said before he passed away, that these people shouldn't think of "what steve would have done".

and it has nothing to do about fanboyism. it's ALL ABOUT not minding the most trivial thing. why complicate a very trivial issue when we know everything gets scratched no matter how careful you are.

and why would i sand off the paint of the iPhone, that's just stupid. i mean anyone who is in a good state of mind wouldn't do such thing to a phone that has a couple of scratches. at least personally, i wouldn't.

also if you're worried of the black phone getting scratches, then send it back. get a full refund. you have 30 day period to get your money back guaranteed.

Obviously, everybody puts a phone in their pocket and there's either keys or coins in there...
I don't. Never have. Keys are always in a different pocket. Plus when I carry it, it's in the sena slipcover. And mine still looks brand new after 10 months.

I picked up a black today - was very concerned about the scuffing. After playing with both the demo model in the store, and my own new device, I've concluded that while there MAY be some bad finishes out there, I don't believe this is going to be widespread. Here's why I believe this:

1) There's not a lot of chatter about scuffing on Twitter this morning.
2) I fingernailed the demo along the sharp edge. It remained totally intact.
3) I bought a Speck CandyShell case with the phone. Those aren't kind to edges when you put a phone in, or pull it out. I did both - installed the device in the case, then later removed it to put on a screen protector. Again, no visible damage to the phone.

I hope this helps some who are worried. I was too - but not so much any more.

Seems lots of people are upset about this 'vandalism', but I wonder if it's just a guy who works at the store with an already defective model?

something wiggling inside my iphone 5?

It seems like something's wiggling inside my iPhone 5. I turned it on and it works, but something is definitely moving if you shake the phone even just a little bit.
