Anyone with this issue go to the Apple Store yet?

What are they saying?

I am still waiting for my Black iPhone 5.

Thanks!

Yea seriously, I also want to know. Mine finally came in from my apple.com order and sure enough there was a little chip missing from the bezel...

What to do

Well I have say after looking at a bunch of black ip5's in the store, I'd say there is an abnormal problem here.

One 32g black from Apple, one 16g black from ATT. Both spotless out of the box.

Get a Zagg skin and call it a day...doesn't look like the Zagg goes around the turn of the metal though...

I have Zagg on my MacBook Pro and it is damned protective. I've never used skins/covers on anything before but this has changed my mind.

EDIT: For those who didn't receive the 5 with a scratch, that is.

A tech reviewer said in his review that his new iPhone 5 had scuffs along the edge when he took it out of the box, so this is not just customers being careless with their new phones.

These kinds of defects will drop the trade in value.

How long is the standard warranty against defects? And will customers who purchased from Apple's website be able to return the iPhone at an Apple store in person or will they have to mail them in for an exchange?

My phone had 2 scratches out of the box - one was very noticeable. I saw it as soon as I took the top off, before I even touched the phone. I went straight to Apple after work and they swapped the phone no questions asked. It ended up taking me about 4 hours to get the phone activated though (5 calls to Sprint and 2 trips to Apple). There was an issue with getting a new SIM card to work with the swapped phone.

Yes, I realize the phone will get scratched eventually, but I should be the one doing the scratching!

You want Apple to note this? whining on here if fine, but ALSO be reporting this to Apple!, give them the feedback.

If you are NOT happy then don't purchase their phones, buy another handset, keep your 4s, the only thing corporations listen to is their coffers not being filled.

I am so smug that I didn't pre-order a IP5 though :D

umm... i bet i could scratch it ...

They use Gorilla glass just like most other phones and most Apple phones, but its not impossible to scratch....

This sounds like more of a "You cannot scratch this phone" type.. :)

But its the media, this would grab the biggest attention right ?

Why dont you since you clearly dont know how it works.

I won't waste waste my time. It has been pointed out by myself and a few others that there are products that are far cheaper than the iPhone that have a durable anodized finish. Believe what you want, it's easier that way.

curious, are most of these scuffs and scratches from fresh out of the box phones? or are they after a couple hours of use?

maybe it is just the way it was handled in the factory, and it is in fact more durable than people expect it. from the way everyone is talking about it, it sounds as if the moment you touch it the paint will start chipping. I carried the phone in my pocket for a few hours today and it still looks new. obviously, i'm not talking about banging the phone against keys and coins.

Not another "-gate"

Spending hundreds on a phone to have nicks or scratches fresh out of the box is completely unacceptable. That is a flaw in the manufacturing and quality control process and Apple needs to make good on that for its loyal customer base. Many of whom who are obviously its most loyal early adopter customer base.

As for the choice to use anodized metal versus glass. It's an example of form being considered over function. Beautiful yes, but practical - no way.

ifixit's video is all I need to see: http://youtu.be/OSFKVq36Hgc

Obviously the video is very tongue in cheek, but certainly a hastened example of normal wear and tear for anyone who would use the phone in a typical pants pocket. I, like many of you, bought right at midnight and will opt to simply sell the phone before opening it.

Suddenly my "outdated" 4s looks better and better.
Unlike the antenna gate issue, this one will not fizz away into obscurity. People would rather have a sexy device that drops the occasional call when handled, than a scratched $500 smartphone that works flawlessly.

*It's sad, but 100% true.

After having the phone for a couple of hours an light use (in and out my pocket a few times),more scratches appeared randomly. Took the phone to apple store and they brought out 2 more which also had the scuffs. They could not do a exchange for a swap because they were sold out. Decided to return the phone and switch back to my 4s til apple gets this sorted out.

If the movement catches on, the stock is going to get pummeled. ********** Apple man. They need to get their ****** together with quality control. iCloud, iMessage, Maps, iPhone 5... It's one thing after another, where the product is 80% of what it should be.

Obviously with Steve out of the picture, the attention to detail is gone.

If Steve were still with us he would have walked into the manufacturing and/or quality control department and demanded they perform a Seppuku.

This problem won't be as easy as just giving out a free bumper case. Any customer who spends top dollar has a right to get a mint condition iPhone out of the box. As for the accelerated wear and tear on the phone. That is just bad design that will turn more than a small amount of high end consumers away.

*Myself included. I'll either opt for the white, or just live with a 4s for the time being.

My black phone has two scuff marks right out of the box. It kind of bothers me but I think I will just forget about it. It is too much hassle to get it exchanged. Maybe I will exchange it when they have enough at the stores.

Your first post was great, but this one is just lol.

I waited in line early this morning and was pretty disappointed to see straight out of the box that there were chips/discoloration on the band of what I thought was gonna be my new sexy black iphone. Mine were near the antennae line around the phone. At first I thought it was glue, but then realized it was uncoated aluminum. Like they missed spots. It was really noticeable and horrifying. The manager exchanged it and said they were gonna send it back for Apple to look at. Opened up the 2nd box. Same thing. I know phones get scratched and scuff with wear and tear, but straight out of the box?? Ended up going with a white one. Wasn't til I got home that I realized there is a nick in the bezel on the white phone. :( :(
