I too have ordered (and am currently waiting on UPS to deliver) a black iPhone 5 and I couldn't give a damn about this.

Sorry but I recognise I am buying a device that will be carried around. No matter how good my intentions at some point it will end up in a pocket with keys, it will probably get dropped, it will inevitably get scratched. But it is a mobile device and therefore I accept that such things will inevitably happen. It has happened to every phone I've ever owned since 1998, it's happened to every mp3 player, every tablet and every laptop. It cannot be avoided and I buy a device to use, not to stare at worrying that it is no longer perfect in every way. Now if it arrives and it doesn't work, or if the home button drops out after a week THEN I will be complaining to Apple.

Oh and I really really hope that idiot who scratched up a demo unit and proudly posted pictures is identified and done for criminal damage.

It doesn't bother you that it's seemingly MUCH more sensitive to be scratched or visually damaged than the prior phone?

just got my black ip5,

found scuffs near the top out of the power button, you can actually feel the scratch

and around the ban there is a white spot which isn't coming off, almost like a spot on a car that did not get any paint

lol you apple trolls are saying the design is the best.

Wear around the edges come on my 4s would never wear around any edges

EDIT: btw 95% of you completely ignored the wear on the edges. WHo gives a **** about the scratches

Yet another thread about it :(

Prepare for the "Scratchgate" onslaught. Entire web forums devoted to this "design flaw." Thousands of outraged posts by emotionally damaged users who now must live with a flawed product. Class action lawsuits to follow demanding that this evil company be punished for its misdeeds. YouTube videos galore. "You're scratching it wrong" snarky comments. Tim Cook offers a free case.

You know in your heart this is exactly what will happen. In fact it is already in full gear in this very thread! Absolutely hilarious.

Since it went back to a counter-weight vibrate motor, when it's time to sell it (under a year warranty), I'll just open it up....disable a vibrating motor contact and have it replaced because the vibrate function doesn't work.

Alot of people are missing the issue here ! The guy scratching the phone instore is resulting in some really dumb responses . If people bothered to follow the thread They will realise units are arriving scratched, ie u an see silver metal like on mine, and one poster I read had his for 4 hours and put it in his pocket to have scratches around the edges.

If people think this is okay, then fine, but get over the tool who used keys instore .

It looks like apple went weight saving avoiding pvd or dlc coating , and as a result will scratch easily.

I'm going to use mine for a week and see, if it scratches easily it going back for a white one. The white ones are the way to go if u want to avoid blatant scratches as it naked aluminium

I can't believe some areshole went into a store and wrecked a display unit.

Next time I'm testing the durability of a TV, I'll first attempt to put my fist through the screen to see how it holds up. If it breaks, I ain't buying it..... /s

A few people complained when they got their iPhone this morning. I'm assuming they read the forums and knew to examine their phone after they got it. Seriously Apple, some people are paying $600 plus for these people. We want HIGH quality devices. Get it together! It was scuffed up right out the box. It wasn't major but still...

Yes, I totally agree. I paid $930 with taxes for mine, and I would be very angry if it came scuffed up!!

The iPhone 4 and 4S was obviously very scratch-resistant, being made of hardened glass and stainless steel.

Wikipedia says: "Anodized aluminium surfaces are harder than aluminium but have low to moderate wear resistance, although this can be improved with thickness and sealing."

I have a few kitchen implements made of anodized aluminium and they don't scratch easily, but that's natural-colour or colourless anodizing. The process can vary greatly.

And here we go again...

Design over durability.

People didn't like the glass back of the iPhone 4 because it shattered easily (I know, because I broke mine). Now the aluminum back scratches easily.

I don't think there is any material on this planet that can't be scratched, doesn't shatter and is transparent to radio signals. So we have to live with what we have. Shame we have to put cases on such beautiful things but until this unobtanium material actually ever happens, we get to buy cases.

I bought a Samsung Galaxy S3 and while the back is plastic, at least I can buy a new one if it gets damaged of scratched. Not so with the iPhone 5.

Problem is, that phone is five years old and people are getting scratches on a five minute old phone. Deffinetly a problem!

The original was prone to those same scratches right out of the box. Now, iPhones coming pre-scratched out of the box is a different story.

This is exactly why I thought the white would be the better model. It will not show scratches like the black will.

No $ale!

I heard that if you take a set of keys to a $100k BMW 7 series, it scratches like this too!!! I have already sent BMW an official letter stating that I WILL NOT be buying a 7 series due to this serious flaw!!!

While agreeing that a purposeful scratching with sharp implements is no indicator of "normal" use (and absolutely improper on an in-store phone), however there was another item in the store it seems no one bothered to read that showed a photo of a black phone with the black WORN at the edges. Of course none of the Fanbois want to speak to that do they...:)

Intentional damage to a store display?

That's just vandalism. Shame on the perp.

For some reason, consumers seem to expect perfection in everything but themselves. Its just metal, glass and plastic. Its gonna scratch. Its gonna break. Its gonna wear out. Get used to it. Take care of it. My 2yr old 4 is in good shape, with no case, no bumper, just common sense. No keys in the pocket with the phone, and reasonable care.

you people are overacting. it's obviously scratchable. it's metal. all metal can get scratches. even the back of the older iPod classic, iPod touch, and nano are stainless steel which is easily scratch-able even by a speck of dust. even the back of the 3G and 3GS are scratch-able. even by dust.

so get over it. it's obvious. and that's why there's an option for phone protections like "invisible shield" and stuff like that.

you make something trivial really big.

I would never have guessed that keys could scratch metal. My mind is just blown right now.../sarcasm

And I agree with every one else that who ever purposely scratched the stores display unit should have to pay for it, that's just rude.
