I'm glad this person scratched the in-store unit (and I could care less about on-line ethical claims from anonymous users) because consumers here and in the store can see what there phone will look like in a month or two of normal use.

Yes the ipods ect. got scratches but the black anodization layer is going to really show it given the contrast. It might end up looking pretty cool though - a hardened battle look of sorts. I've kept my 4 case-less it's entire life. I would think twice with these.

I would agree with you, but here is the problem. It probably would not happen to the majority of users. Why? The guy who scratched it said it himself. He used the SIM ejector tool, which is very sharp BTW and he said
the back I had to apply a bit of pressure on to scratch it

If they all scratch, doesn't the resale value adjust?

So Gazelle has three levels: Broken, Good, Flawless

If all the iPhone 5's get scuffs....wouldn't that just be considered in the Good category? And the price would adjust accordingly since that's what the majority of the phones will be.

Sure, you wrap it up in a case and throw it in your sock drawer....it will be flawless....but what fun is that? :D

Go to the nearest mall, restaurant, school, whatever. Spend an hour and count the iPhones. Then, add up on 1 hand the number of iPhones that are not in cases.

Aluminum scratches...

Then Dont! live dangerously.. I know I do! Raw dog baby!!

Haha! Same here. For some reason my post before that showed up twice and I couldn't find a way to delete the last one, so I just edited it to say that. Friends think I'm crazy for not using a case, but they look to good to be in one.

2012

Oh no, Titanium Powerbook all over again. And free bumpers. Again.

And a knowledge base entry describing the "natural" properties of anodized Al.

Oh Apple, finally your after-sales debacle support group can shine again.

Last I checked Aluminum Macbooks Scratched.. Metal Scratches, Glass breaks, the sky is blue, Roses are red and that guy is a fool.

I had an original TiBook G4. It never had a scratch on it. Why would a laptop ever get scratched? What the hell are people doing with their laptops, tossing across the counter on their cover? Putting them in their toolbox? Leaving them on the floor? They should be pulled from a laptop bag/sleeve , used, then put back.

So this guy would appreciate it if a visitor to his house decided to pull out their keys and see if his computer, refrigerator, or tv were scratch resistant?

I believe he would if he were selling his computer, refrigerator or tv to them as a very high priced fashion statement.

instead of the title being "Black iPhone 5 Anodized Aluminum Susceptible to Scratching?" it should be "Vandal takes keys to in store display unit of new iPhone 5 to show that it isn't indestructible"

The act of vandalism should have been the headline, not the fact that the phone is able to be scratched...

3 Things

1. Purposefully damaging an in-store demo is super lame. Boo.

2. Aluminum is a soft, scratch-prone material. While I have not yet seen one in person, it's a bit disappointing that a handheld device that sees such heavy/daily use would be made out of such a soft metal. And the anodization will only highlight the contrasting silver color of a scratch. This singe aspect lead me to, for the first time, wait on pre-ordering an iPhone.

3. And for the first time, I am considering the white model.

"hardness of the anodized aluminum oxide coating rivals that of a diamond, enhancing the abrasion resistance of the aluminum."

So.... the material is harder because it is anodized, but since the color is added after the anodizing process, it's susceptible to scratching off.

I have some anodized aluminum cookware that has held up very well. It has a darker "slate" color to it, but I didn't think it was added as a color -- I thought it was part of the metal, so that if you scratched it, you would just have more of the same color beneath the scratch. Too bad the iPhone 5 doesn't have the same color all throughout the material. I wonder what is done to achieve that vs. what is being done to the iPhone back.

Folks you can make fun all you want. I just got to work with my phone and OUT OF THE BOX the phone is scuffed already on one of the corners. Not really a scratch, but this is definitely an inexcusable issue.
