Lol... the last eight years?
Well, not on as high of a $ scale... bought I bought things too!!
This might be a shocker, but a lot of technology, functionality and features we associate with Apple, Google, Microsoft and other big ones, are not invented inside those companies' walls. They're bought.
Added values / improvements might be just plain rebatching, implemented in existing technology or anything in between. While these acquisitions are not publicly announced in general, they're mostly no secret.
Apple's iTunes, iWork, Final Cut Pro, iCloud, Siri, Maps, Touch ID, iBooks, Filemaker and even OSX are results of technology bought by Apple cash rather than Apple creative brainstorming. Some are (heavily/partly) based on bought tecnologies, some swallowed the technology in existing products.
Google's gMail, adSense, Picasa, Google Maps, Google Analytics, Android, YouTube, Google Docs, Google Inbox, all bought.
Microsoft most famous ones are Hotmail, Skype, Visio, Bing, Microsoft Dynamics.
Does this makes them bad? Absolutely not. Some of these companies wouldn't have survived, others saw their technology projected to millions of users they otherwise would never have reached. Some company stakeholders got seriously rich overnight, others got their dream job. In the end everybody wins.
