Not really.
You didn’t miss an Apple announcement or anything- that was just @DNichter making up some nonsense & purporting it as fact... pretending like he knows something he doesn’t. =)

As far as naming conventions go- I wish they’d mimic the MacBook line. Like, if you have a 2017 MacBook Pro... it’s obviously a bit higher-end than a 2011 MacBook Pro. No need to have one called MacBook 27 & the other the MacBook 33- they only drop one phone of each size per year, so just name the size & year... slap “iPhone” after it & voila/Bob’s your uncle.

Rambo on twitter mentioned it. He usually has a good track record with stuff like that, although I realized later he may have been talking about the upcoming beta.

Did I miss something?

Rambo on Twitter mentioned it. It very well could be about the betas though.

Gotcha.
Future note:
Prefacing things with “I wouldn’t be surprised if”, or “in my opinion”, rather than stating as fact “they are going to”, “this is what is happening” (when you literally have no idea) will make you look like a much more solid honest dude, & not some rando pompous bs artist.
I genuinely appreciate you admitting that you were talking out of the side of your neck, generally quoting someone you don’t know, that doesn’t work at Apple, and that you think you may have misunderstood anyways- that’s actually VERY big of you.
Most people will take a minor faux pas & double down!
You absolutely have my respect for that.

Edit:
As an aside... Rambo is a software dude. He is VERY good at reverse engineering OS files, poring through minutia for hints about interoperability & upcoming features, etc.
That’s what he’s been “reliable” doing in the past. Clearly, the next naming convention on Apple’s iPhones isn’t hidden in iOS code (they reference devices like iPhone 9,4... iPad 7,3... etc.), so hearing him casually refer to the next phone as “the 11” would in no way confirm Apple’s plans.
You’d get just as solid & reliable info if you asked your mail carrier, or polled a 2nd grade class, etc.
Anyways... we’ll all know soon! =)
Fingers crossed for the automobile & MacBook naming convention to spread to iPhone (2018 iPhone, 2019 iPhone, etc)

I have no issues admitting if I am wrong about something. I jumped the gun. I agree though, hoping for a simplified naming scheme as well.

My vote (not that it matters): Use "Plus" to describe an enhanced feature set, not size:

-- iPhone
-- iPhone Plus
-- iPhone Plus

... and then give both "Plus" models the same damn features.

If the next iteration of the X only contains speed and camera improvements then this will be the first year I won’t upgrade. No criticism of Apple but I’ll be very pleased to save the cash and perhaps put it towards a Series 4 watch instead.

This is what I’m thinking at the moment as well. Might be tempted by the new iPad Pro too, and we’re talking about getting an iMac for home (hopefully if they release updated ones soon) - could be a very expensive few months!!!

It was pure marketing genius that Apple named their flagship as iPhone X last year, with emphasis on pronouncing the number "10". Not because of the decade anniversary which had a bonus meaning to it, but seemed they intentionally wanted to remain ahead in the consumer eyes with the competition from Samsung since they just released the Galaxy 9 this year... But when September comes the new iPhone X models will still cement Apple as being higher than Samsung's phone numerical wise, that portrays them as being behind and therefore the older version in tech. Once Samsung catches up to what seems likely that the next Android phone will be called the Galaxy 10, Apple is therefore in a position to easily again one-up them, branding the 2019 iPhones as the iPhone 11.

For this year with all the color variants being rumored, it appears Apple is trying to bring back and have a repeat in the style of the release of the iPhone 5c. But interestingly this time with more premium features included. Apple has probably learned to make sure they are more enticing this time. Therefore possibly calling the 6.1 inch model as the iPhone XC, since it uses similar design of the "X" series. While still remaining on top of Samsung from a marketing perspective by avoiding to call it iPhone 9.

As for the other model names for the new 5.8 and 6.5 - which will most likely be based on the current iPhone X. Naturally calling them as iPhone XS does sound logical. But does present a connotation of being "extra small", which is similar to the abbreviation of clothing sizes, that might present confusion to the average customer and probably something that Apple wants to avoid in their marketing. So the official names to the successors of the current iPhone X will remain a mystery. We are only a few weeks away until the announcement reveal in September.
