Why ridiculous? Comparable large screen phones such as the Note push "pro" features. What's the difference? In the end, it's just added features so I don't think it matters all that much.

Because there is nothing “Pro” about a smart phone. Not to mention, the term Pro would be conflating with other products the Apple has their lineup already, and a phone labeled “Pro”would just make it that much more confusing.

Why not just "iPhone."

It starts to get silly with all the letters and numbers, especially once you get past "10."

I mean honestly, do people really care anymore? If your friend asks you "Oh, that iPhone "Ex" looks so good!" are you really going to say, "Oh no, it's not the TEN it's TEN-C because it only has an LCD screen, not an OLED screen like the TEN or TEN-TWO."

And then your friend just gives you a weird look and checks a text message on their 6 Plus.

I don’t really agree. There’s nothing necessarily “pro” about an iPad or a MacBook either, just more power and or features. The pro moniker just means higher end to Apple, they could easily spin that about the X Plus. If people understand the difference for iPads and MacBooks, why couldn’t they with an iPhone? I ultimately don’t think it’ll swing this way, but your reasoning doesn’t make sense to me. I just think they could clean up the lineups with a consistent naming technique for their main products, making it simpler for consumers.

Seems my reasoning is why Apple never has the term ‘Pro’ for an iPhone in some aspects, and it’s not like they likely haven’t considered it, but it doesn’t make sense. The MacBook and iPad are products for productivity, a smart phone is a commodity and a communication device first. Those are two things are not mutually exclusive in your argument and contradict each other. Also, everything in Apples lineup needs to be labeled ”Pro” again I think that’s conflating.

For the record, every year it comes up the iPhone should be named ‘Pro’. And Apple never does it. Why? Because they still are continue to use the numbering scheme devalues the older model iPhones by showing the newest models with the highest number. At some point Apple might change that, but the numbering system still works.

Fair enough. Apparently it’s just moving to 11, from what I saw. So I guess that’s that. You’re right.

It's iPhone 11 apparently. Not sure about the 6.1, but the OLED models will be called iPhone 11.

Edit: Not confirmed, just from a reputable source on twitter. Could have been talking about the betas, but he did not deny it being linked to the phone name.

Introducing the all new iPhone xtra small plus size model

We like to call it the iPhone xs+ but you ***** in the media will **** with us over the naming so we made the joke first.

Someone inside Apple should leak the damn names...

Hey HomePod....

My money is them sticking w/X like they did forever on OSX. That will be the "Pro" line of iPhone and it will just come in two sizes like the iPad Pro does currently and the "base" model just being "iPhone."

iPhone
5.8" iPhone X (2018)
6.5" iPhone X (2018)

I like it. I’m sure they’d like to get the budget model to be simply “iPhone”, similar to the budget iPad.

So no Touch ID or notchless designs anymore? This is a huge mistake. They better release a decent SE2 otherwise my choices will be very limited.

iPhone X already exists. So you want people to be saying iPhone X (2017) and iPhone X (2018)? That's a horrible idea.

I'm sure they can come up with great marketing names.

Did I miss something?

Not really.
You didn’t miss an Apple announcement or anything- that was just @DNichter making up some nonsense & purporting it as fact... pretending like he knows something he doesn’t. =)

As far as naming conventions go- I wish they’d mimic the MacBook line. Like, if you have a 2017 MacBook Pro... it’s obviously a bit higher-end than a 2011 MacBook Pro. No need to have one called MacBook 27 & the other the MacBook 33- they only drop one phone of each size per year, so just name the size & year... slap “iPhone” after it & voila/Bob’s your uncle.

That’s a good thought. I do think they will still carry the Plus suffix for the larger X.

So there will be
iPhone (2018)
iPhone X (2018)
iPhone X Plus (2018)

Definitely a lot simpler. Having said that. Samsung will reach the 10th revision next year (Galaxy S10 and Note 10). I wonder if that would push Apple to adjust the naming scheme into numbers again (ie. 11). Many lay consumers still rely on numbers to gauge how recent a product is released.
