Rugged version of the Apple Watch is a dumb down version like the Apple Watch SE? No thanks! Who wants to wear a budget Watch with limited features inside it?

My Garmin has a titanium case and band and I like how it looks. It’s understated black carbon look. The option for the current model is silver titanium with vented titanium band.

The options for women in the S models are very nice as well.

Those of us who just want to track outdoors activity whilst in harsh environments, whilst keeping in the ecosystem.

This would be a no brainier for me and I’m sure others, if Apple tried to target some of the Garmin crowd.

Not sure if anyone has said it already but needs the ability to function without using the touchscreen. Rain/swimming/gloves make it impossible to use the watch and Siri isn't always available/able to perform what you want it to.

A rugged Apple Watch is cool and all, but PLEASE give us a standalone model; meaning active cell / data service without having to tie it to an active iPhone cell account...

I don’t know. I can’t see there being a design for something like this that would fit with the Apple design mentality. It would have to be very bulky.

I’d be more interested in them coming out with a model that just has much longer battery life or even just a smart band that has extra battery life.

I have a Felix 5+ and it’s fantastic and i may upgrade to the 7 when it comes out. I originally bought it after a cardiac episode but it’s great for running and Garmin Connect is great for managing your sports and health data. I look at the AW from time to time but Garmin Connect, battery life and special device support keep me with Garmin.

I also prefer a round watch. There are some rumors that Apple is working on a round watch and I may look at that. AW is a much better smart watch and that’s what the vast majority want. Garmin is for people who want more fitness functionality, and battery life.
Have you tried using garmin coach yet? It’ss little hidden in the system but it is a priceless resource for training to get a specific 10K, half marathon time. Works brilliantly with your Fenix

Casio G Shock has some models you want to consider....
Casio‘s look over-the-top extravagant for my tastes. They are like “butch” drag queens of watches. I just want something plain and simple.

"rubberized" finish is more rugged than the DLC coating? it's another type of fashion ...

Super interested in Apple's take on a beefier watch. Would almost buy that, sight unseen.
Combine that with some sort of iUP for Apple Watch, and I'm in on launch.

One of the hard parts for the active Garmin customers is that Garmin Connect is sticky for long-time users. I have 9 years of activity and biometric data in Garmin Connect and I don't know that there's an easy way to transfer that data to another platform. I also don't know if there's another comparable platform. My data was 8 GB back in 2018. It' probably at least double that today as there's far more data collected now.

Garmin Connect is nicely integrated with iOS too. I've heard that it's not so nice with Android.

The maximum battery life on the 6X Solar is 56 days in expedition mode and I don't think we're going to see something like that from Apple anytime soon.

Active users accept bulky for battery life. I had a Forerunner 610 - 92 grams I think. It was a brick. I think that's what the current 6X weighs but you get up to 24 days of battery life.

I'm not training for a race; my training is more to support my tennis and overall fitness. I used to be in much better shape (40 MPW) but got hit with cancer and recovery from 18 months of treatment is very slow.

But it's a point about Garmin - they give you the kitchen sink in terms of features.

I know that there are devices I can add to my home spin bike as well to track power and effort and I may do that in the future.

In recent years, a new generation of PVD + PACVD (plasma-assisted CVD) coatings has gained widespread commercial success. As is well known, carbon can exist in three allotropic forms. Carbon, in a diamond crystal structure, is one of the hardest know materials. Carbon, in a graphite crystal structure, is very soft and lubricous. Carbon-based coatings, referred to as Diamond-like-Carbon (DLC) coatings, combine these two different properties of diamond and graphite - hence possess high hardness levels - in the range of conventional tribological PVD coatings (1500 - 3200 HV), coupled with a coefficient of friction which is 200-500% lower than that of conventional PVD coatings.

Agreed, I don’t think they’d ever do a direct competitor (or could) but something that offered the more robust outer shell would be a good start.

When I go to replace my AW 5 Nike sport edition, I’m more likely to trade up to a stainless or titanium version BECAUSE I used my Watch daily for exercise tracking. Rugged, for me at least, is having a metal casing that can take more punishment and the scratches simply become part of the character of the watch. And having the sapphire crystal should resist most scratches.

My Seiko Automatic survived (and continues to work flawlessly) for 15+ years now with zero scratches on the screen - the stainless case and band on the other hand are beat up from all those years with no babying the thing, including ocean swimming, doing major car repairs and other general rough conditions. I only went the cheap route with the Apple Watch as I wasn’t sure I could give up wearing my Seiko full time (I LOVE the mechanics of it and the fact that it doesn’t require any maintenance). But the Watch has been such a great game changer for tracking my health and exercise, I’ll definitely upgrade to the next version.

Ya no thanks. Knowing Apple somehow thinks they don't have to warrant water damage on an IP68 rated device they already sell, I'm sure they'll figure out how not to warrant this thing too.

How about the other side of the spectrum and a Apple Watch Air with no health features and all week battery for $99?

My first smartwatch was the Apple Watch Series 5, purchased for tracking HR while running. For casual running it was great, but then once I needed to see simple things like my "lap distance", the metrics were not there to add to my running workout watch face. I eventually decided to go with a Garmin Fenix 6 and it has been a far better experience with sports. The Apple Watch is hands-down the best everyday watch because the integration with iOS is perfect, but now I can customize my Garmin to show more metrics when running, record multi-day hikes (with a 10-30 day battery life), and switching to buttons from the touch screen has actually been enjoyable.

This makes sense as the market gets larger.
Actually, as people work out, the market gets skinnier.
Could someone use it as a weapon?
You can use anything as a weapon. This would not be a very effective one.

Water gets into devices through buttons and charging ports. If you get rid of them, water becomes much less of a problem. Apple got rid of charging ports from the start. The crown is basically an optical sensor with no access to the main part of the phone with the electronics. If they decided to go with virtual buttons, the watches would be almost completely water resistant. I guess if you dove deep enough, pressure would push water through the seals between the sapphire and the watch case.
