I just put mine in a Spigen rugged case/wristband and it works. Work on something else Apple! 😁

Looks like this year is shaping up to be a "leap year" for Apple Watch (though a "leap" in AW land is more like a tweak in reality)... I'm so ready to upgrade from my AW-4... but alas I'm sticking to my boycott until the Netherlands supports AW LTE... promised in 2018... and every year after, but still waiting... I may still be on the 4 series in 2025... for all the talk of the Netherlands being so advanced after 10 years here moving from SF in many ways the Netherlands is a 3rd world digital country (the amount of stuff I have ordered from Amazon US and shipped here is insane... and it's still cheaper... yeah in theory I have and pay for "1Gbit Internet", but reality is I get between 10-100 Mbit... with no other service providers to choose from)... anyway rant over and back to topic...

On the rugged side I've been in 2 major bike accidents where I landed (or skidded on) my AW4... bottom half of the screen deeply scratched from pavement, dents, etc... but everything still works great. So they can take a lickin' and keep on tickin'

Is there any way to replace the glass?

well basically Apple does a refurb swap for 325Eur... given it's a 4 series it's pointless given the AW SE is 300Eur (ok no ECG, but then a 6 is just 100 more)... basically Apple's policy is "yeah we offer an Apple Watch repair service... for idiots".

We have Apple kiosks outside of the Apple Store in our local mall and they can do some services for less or even some services that Apple won't do. I guess Apple's approach on repairability is not that good with watches compared to phones.

Honestly a g-shock case is all that is needed. The watch itself is surprisingly rugged, but if you don’t want to scratch the sides if you are often bumping it, then a case is best.

The key is making it easy to remove without making it easy to accidentally remove...

Thank you very much, but the watch is surprisingly rugged, and while I sometimes bump it against things, I hardly drop it - and even if, the small display naturally withstands a lot more abuse than bigger ones . I‘d rather take a rugged, non slippery iphone. You know, without glass back...
I agree, the Apple watch is indeed surprisingly rugged. But I have 2. The gen 4 goes out to the garden or into the garage with me. The Gen 6 goes out to party.
If they go rugged (and presumably an enlarged case), make the battery bigger. No good doing extreme sports/endurance events without worrying about the battery conking out halfway through.
I'd like a 2.5 day battery, for sure.
Could someone use it as a weapon?
Yes, it could be James Bond's new version of the exploding Seiko he used to have in the 1970s and 80s.
For running/cycling Garmin is the bee’s knees, a you say, it’s pricey, but there really is nothing to compare with the metrics it creates for you.
If I didn’t have garmin I would be tempted by AW, as it’s a great all rounder.
What I need in my roughneckin' watch is HUGE numbers and letters, with physical buttons instead of a touch screen.
Solid state buttons would eliminate the problem of gloves randomly pushing the the existing buttons, but introduce the same unreliability the screen has with fingers sweaty from a workout.
Solid state buttons are probably more susceptible to malfunctioning in a rain soaked run or hunting trip, garden, or under a greasy transmission than they would a li'l bit of sweat. Please!
Gross. An armored Apple Watch for tactical Timmy the angry cop. I’m sure it will look like a casio G Shock. (I actually regularly wear a Casio G Shock, but it is a high end model you have to import from Japan)

Apple already has a highly durable Apple Watch. It’s the steel model with the sapphire screen crystal.
Wow, I see what you did there. Well played.

You made fun of "Tactical Timmy" in one sentence, then 2 sentences later, you presented your own Tactical Timmyesque solution and immediately justified it as "okay because it's high end".
I run in freezing temperatures and the buttons work a lot better than a touchscreen. I had a Garmin Forerunner 630 which is touchscreen and I’d thought that I’d miss it with the Felix but buttons are much better once you memorize the controls and menus.
Yep, as long as the screen is readable.
Not sure if anyone has said it already but needs the ability to function without using the touchscreen. Rain/swimming/gloves make it impossible to use the watch and Siri isn't always available/able to perform what you want it to.
Siri is a pampered city girl. She knows NOTHING about fixing a fence, filling a pothole, milking a cow, or butchering a chicken. She knows nothing about real people.

"rubberized" finish is more rugged than the DLC coating? it's another type of fashion ...
And it's a BAD fashion! I have so much rubberized stuff that has just gotten all mushy, gooey, and sticky. What a mess. Rubberizing is a horrible invention!
...you can use anything as a weapon. This would not be a very effective one.
I'm waiting for this argument to be settled in the next John Wick or XXX movie.

I'll bet you can kill zombies with it. We're just not creative enough at thinking this through!

If apple wants to expand in the (extreme) sports area they really need to put some effort into the software. Sure there is improvements to be done on the hardware side, but the software side is ridiculous. How about the ability to use gps on all outdoor activities for a start? Or the ability to use auto pause for all gps-based activities. Maybe a second metrics screen? Or just don't start an activity before you get location and heart rate readings...

By rugged environments I assume they mean the kitchen ?

Really worried mine is going to get wrecked in mine . Bang bang ding bash etc

I want an Apple Watch dive computer.

This would be epic.
With support for the Pelagic Pressure Systems transmitter (they manufacture the transmitters for oceanic, aqualung, shearwater, etc.) and at a better price point as the Garmin Descent Mk2i please. (€1900 with transmitter )

No Rolex-Apple watch?

It cannot sustain cold temperatures at near Arctic or Antarctic or Himalaya climates.

It cannot be used for scuba diving as a dive computer. You cannot even control it underwater.

It will not work in salt water without corrosion.

It cannot provide long enough battery for walkabouts or hunting trips where you will be off grid for long stretches of time.

It does not have decentralized radio functionality to allow people to communicate in the wild where a satellite phone is usually required.

It does not support universal charging with USB-C

Water damage is not covered by warranty.

Those are the things you want the Apple Watch to do, in addition to what it does now?

It would end up being hideous and extremely costly to do 1/3 of what you listed. And only a small percentage of potential customers would care about that list.

Probably something similar to this:

If the watch will look hideous or not is completely subjective.
If they come with a rugged version of the apple watch, then no, it will not be as sleek looking as the normal watch.
But Garmin managed to produce a nice enough looking watch, yes unfortunately it's pricey.
If Apple could produce something similar at 80% of the Garmin price, then I'm game.

What is the Garmin price you're using as your baseline for this 80% calculation?
