I was skeptical of Apple Watch and waited until recently to buy one. I've come around and find it really useful with the cellular option. I can't wait to see what they put out if true. I would definitely look at a more rugged version. I mean, what's not to like about something that can potentially protect your $500+ investment that you swing around on your wrist all day long?

For running/cycling Garmin is the bee’s knees, a you say, it’s pricey, but there really is nothing to compare with the metrics it creates for you.
If I didn’t have garmin I would be tempted by AW, as it’s a great all rounder.
I would agree, however I am not a runner. I started out with a Jabra UP then a fitbit, then a better fitbit. I have not used a watch is decades...seemed unnecessary seeing that I have time on the iPhone. I then went to the AW because of the Apple ecosystem.

I have a Felix 5+ and it’s fantastic and i may upgrade to the 7 when it comes out. I originally bought it after a cardiac episode but it’s great for running and Garmin Connect is great for managing your sports and health data. I look at the AW from time to time but Garmin Connect, battery life and special device support keep me with Garmin.

I also prefer a round watch. There are some rumors that Apple is working on a round watch and I may look at that. AW is a much better smart watch and that’s what the vast majority want. Garmin is for people who want more fitness functionality, and battery life.
Can you link the rumor to the round smart watch? I have never heard that. It would be HIGHLY doubtful even if there has been a rumor. It’s likely more wishful thinking.

do not hold your breath

Agreed, I don’t think they’d ever do a direct competitor (or could) but something that offered the more robust outer shell would be a good start.

Garmin is giving their users a considerable amount of cloud storage with Garmin Connect, definitely more than Apple is providing free with iCloud.

Let’s be realistic here. Apple is more likely to be considering making a rugged watch band and case combo, and will charge $150-$200 for it, than design protection into the watch hardware itself.

And please stop ignoring mountain biking 🚵‍♀️in the list of potential sports within workouts.
Just in case you have noticed... MTB is by far much more popular than most other sports in the lists.

That’s great but has no appeal. To others it will. I’m just saying a more robust Apple Watch would be welcome for certain situations, whilst retaining activity rings, notifications etc

It’ll all good if it’s not for everyone because nothing in life really is 👍

I used to own a LiquidMetal tennis racquet but my guess is the quantity in the racquet wasn't enough to make a difference in performance.

I would love to see an Apple Watch more like a Casio G-Shock.
I love that, not only was I going to say this, but someone already did and it was the FIRST reply.

I love my G-Shock. It's a "wear it and forget it" watch. I bang it against things all the time yet it still looks brand new.

If Apple released something like this I might actually finally get an Apple Watch!

Or, just add ApplePay and iMessage functionalities for the G-Shock Sports line and call it the Rugged Apple Watch? That would be a wilder collaboration than with Nike.

If you had a smaller watch would you bang against things less?

Those of us who just want to track outdoors activity whilst in harsh environments, whilst keeping in the ecosystem.

This would be a no brainier for me and I’m sure others, if Apple tried to target some of the Garmin crowd.
So the full version of Apple Watch, an additional $100 more, you would not buy it?

is it really the case that needs to be more rugged?? Will they put the next gen Ion-X Glass in the rugged version?
/s

It's the battery that kills its utility not the ruggedness. I've worn my Apple Watch on a lot of rough field work strips (doing remote fish biology, etc.) and it held up fine, it's when I want to do a very long trail run or multi-day hike with the GPS on that it becomes useless compared to my old Garmin watch that could run for most of a week doing the same.

Garmin gives you these choices for the case:

Stainless Steel
Titanium
Titanium with Diamond-Like Coating

My Garmin is three years old and there are no scratches on it.
