This is going to be the death of the Mac computers as a whole. Arm Macs won’t have any compatability with any of the software available until the software developers update their software and most will be left behind. Microsoft tried to transition to ARM with the Surface Pro X and Windows 10 on ARM has been a failure. I expect this to fail as well, especially since ARM will probably not have the same performance for all tasks compared to X86-64.

Very true. But Apple is going to completely transition away from x86 over the next few years. They don't see this market (virtualization on the desktop/laptop) as big for them long term. They see cloud based VM's as the future. They are looking to control the hardware completely to differentiate and push advancement forward.

could always stuff in x86 emulation compatability layer

i had some kind of Fujitsu laptop 20 years ago with a Via CPU that did that. It was fine.

Off topic, but I had one of those too. I think it used a Trasmetta Crusoe processor with no processor registers and used something called "code morphing" technology.

It was a super cool little laptop, but I sold it after about a year.

Open to the idea. Been a Mac user since the 68030, through PowerPC and then Intel. Swift applications are probably simple to port or emulate, and Catalina already started killing legacy applications and frameworks. All about implementation and what layers are or aren't present for applications to run.

Could take the ChromeOS route with what they've did with Android and add the ability to run iOS / iPadOS apps on the device since the instruction set would be virtually identical. That's a lot of software.

I don't care about the price, as long as my Mac does what I want from it.

Good for you. I don't care about the price. the RPi is sh*t, couldn't go further than just an home app to open/close my garage door or turn on/off an lightbulb in my bedroom. "how exciting!". NOT.

Thing is: I do not want to switch, end period. I've been using it for ten years and I want to use for another ten years.

I've seen their iPad port and I've laughed miserably hard at this. It's terrible. Pixelmator and Vectornator does a little better - but does not match my desktop stupidly quick and painless workflow.

Lies, lies. ARM aren't energy efficent. Look at the iPhones, the main complaint is always "it drains my battery too fast". And it does drain the battery faster than COVID19 is killing people. I cant use my phone for straight 4 hour without draining the battery.

Thank you. I have more faith in x86/x64 than the ****** ARM and I do not want to put it on emulators like WINE (I know the name is "Wine is not an emulator" but frankly, IT IS!). And I will keep using the last Intel Mac until the end of my life.

It's not a confusion, it's a pretty firm belief. ARM is sh*t. x86 is a GOD. I'll keep my last Intel based Mac, but I'm more than prepared to be switching to AMD based PCs with Linux for work and laugh at the ARM based PCs failing when it happens. I can live navigating between Linux on x86/x64 and macOS Intel. I just do not want to have anything to do with the terrible ARMs. It has potential to be worse than PPC/Rosetta days. And boy, these days were a nightmare I will never want to relive.
Your argument is like random word generator.
Switch will happen whether you want it or not. You are free to go for the platform that suits your needs.

This is exciting though. I wonder if they are gonna use the opportunity to make any alterations to macOS desktop or to make the transition familiar and easy, maintain the traditional macOS Finder Desktop Experies: Dock, Global Menu Bar etc. Apple should use the iPad style dock in the new macOS on A series.

It is an assumption that MacOS will be running on ARM at this stage. It really wouldn’t surprise me that these laptops aren’t just a clam shell iPad taking advantage of a slightly larger form factor for increased thermals and battery.

Funny, take away the 'impressive' graphics and that's how I feel about PC games. Many of them use the same game engines. Listing iOS games isn't going to change your mind, is it?

I wasn’t being snarky or passive aggressive. I really want great mobile games, I subscribe to Apple Arcade for goodness sake, so I very much want recommendations. So far the games I play most on iPad are PC game ports (Civ VI and XCOM, both of which I think are better on iPad than on PC (though I wouldn’t think that if I wanted to use mods)). I also really, really want want Into The Breach (haven’t played that but it looks perfect for iPad) for iPad, and Two Point Hospital. But I’m kinda getting off topic here. I’d love recommendations (and if they’re in Apple Arcade all the better).
Doom 3 I'll give a point to for getting back to the roots.

Oh I think it’s the other way round - Doom 3 was the departure, Doom... whatever the last one was called seems more like getting back to its roots, or at least that’s the impression I get, like I said I haven’t played it.

I believe more in AMD rumours than in ARM rumours. Since Apple has been testing macOS with AMD chips as seen in code found on macOS Catalina betas. I would perfectly welcome an AMD based Mac, better performance and a little bit cheaper than Intel. Ryzen has been doing great.
I really wanted to believe this rumor but looking into it it seems there were only a bunch of text strings found with codenames for all of AMDs GPU and APU models. These strings could likely have been supplied by AMD themselves and be related to a GPU driver. There were a bunch of really old codenames in there as well.

What makes me even more doubtful is that the rumor was never regurgitated in any form, the Air received Ice Lake, and the ARM rumors are simply more consistent.

Yawn...... This is the same Bloomberg news that said this was going to happen and was announced almost two years ago.

This is also the sam Bloomberg that said spy chips were on motherboards from Apple and others that could be activated for spying.

I take everything I hear from them with a grain of salt.

blokmberg I doubt ever stated that. They ran an article at the height of the Trump vs.China trade war when Huawei was banned for sales and infrastructure in the US with US “intelligence” stating any hardware manuafactured in China would have rogue chips that would send the components use and connections back to China gov. The article simply mentioned Apple manufactures its products in China and could be suspect.

unless of course you have the specific article stating what you claim.

They JUST released this amazing laptop that fixed all the problems and they just couldn't resist toying with it again and (probably) ****ing it up. It's so frustrating as a consumer to constantly go into forums and read "Yeah, everyone agrees year X is the best but the company refuses to rebuild it."
Boo. Hoo.

Technology moves on and evolves.

Why not just get an iPad?

Seriously if Mac goes to ARM without the legacy software transitioned in then might as well use iOS 14 / Mac Catalyst apps. At that point it is really not much different now from using iOS apps.

Have you seen some of the ported iOS apps? Current macOS version are much better. macOS Mail is better than iOS Mail.

Because a new rumor suggested ARM delayed to 2021.

Did he edit in the article after you replied? Because it's there, from 2018, and they did in fact say what the poster claimed they said.

Even so, they'd only be off by 6 months or so. It's been clear Apple plans on creating ARM Mac products (if not a full transition away from Intel) for several years.

I really liked when Apple transitioned to Intel for their processors and still think that it is, in spite of the flaws, the best option. I like the idea and capabilities of RISC type processors but I still feel strongly about them having their place outside of the mac ecosystem. If they do decide to go this route, I hope we are left with options.

In March 2001 Macs were not x86.

I didn't need x86 at that time, but my work has changed since then. I only mentioned it to drive home what a big deal it would be for me to transition to Linux, which would be my only realistic choice in an ARM-only Mac world.

x86 has been a requirement for my job for about 10 years now. If that weren't the case I'd be excited for ARM Macs.
