I also can't see high profile professional video editing (Hollywood style) being done with an ARM based Mac. I have not seen high quality GPUs coupled with one of these.

Tegra is the name of the ARM chip. Using Cortex-A57 as CPU and Maxwell 128SM as GPU.

Nice, but I want to see performance, not a wiki page. It must be really slow to process video and it does not run Final Cut or Adobe Premiere. Plus these are for datacenters not for video editing professionals.

Apple has been trying to merge the Mac and iOS por a while... ARM processors on the Mac would mean that they might be able tu run iOS Apps which is a huge market right know and just might push the sales of the Mac that have been dropping slowly for years. Also, Apple has been relying on Intel for their processors for a long time and Intel has just became the same IBM became a few years ago. Now that Apple has successfully tested their own processors on extremely popular devices they are ready to start moving away from Intel with a "full" in house Mac. Having control of the whole design means that Apple can fine tune and improve their products faster and better than ever instead of depending on another company to supply integral parts. And finally, using in house processors mean that the final product can be potentially cheaper (less expensive, sorry ;)) and that will benefit the consumers too.

I truly hope the new A14 or A15 Mac is fast enough to compete with the standard Intel Mac because to consumer eyes, everything is about speed.

Intel is already lagging behind ARM by single core performance and power efficiency.

You said ARM can not game and it can. You said ARM must be slow for video editing and it is faster than the fastest Xeon W.

CPU instruction never really affect their performance. ARM is faster today just because x86 was a 40 years old design and is a burden for modern CPUs.

Seems that it is still possible when reading that page wording. I've tested the JIRA app at work; Nothing really useful on both my iPhone and Mac, and I prefer to use the web based JIRA version because the app has nothing worth it.

ARM can't game, period. It cannot run F1 2019, Flight Simulator X, and a myriad of high quality PC games that are GPU intensive. Heck, ARM can't even run iRacing with enough FPS for pro gamers. I said games for PRO, not for casual gamers like Nintendo noobs or Candy Crush addicted people.

ARM is not faster, my iPad running a Qemu app struggles to emulate Windows 2000. WINDOWS 2000!!!!!

These ARMs cannot be used by video editing professionals either, since they can't run Adobe Premiere, Final Cut and similar professional video editing software capable of rendering high quality 4K videos.

Also, 3D rendering on ARMs? ROFL. Not gonna happen. I am yet to see a car being designed on it...

Apple licensed MacOS once. It was not a huge win for apple in licensing fees. It almost bankrupted them.

That was because the clone manufacturers made better computers than Apple and had a much faster development cycle than Apple.

Almost nobody writing software using assembly directly so switching from Intel to ARM is just like flipping a switch inside Xcode.

Since Catalina already dropped 32bit support and ARM64 shares same default FP64 format AMD64 is using, the source code is highly compatible and 99% app just need a recompile to run on ARM Mac.

BTW adobe already porting their App to iPad. Photoshop on iPad is running the same source code of their desktop counterparts.


I do iOS app development so I know how hard it is still to port a iOS app to Mac Catalyst.
Apple explicitly mark iOS AMD64 simulator binary ABI incompatible with AMD64 Mac Catalyst binary. This shows how much they want to separate iOS app and Mac Catalyst app.
 
I want the same drugs you are using to have a such unrealistic dream. A Desktop ARM will never beat a Desktop x86.

Actually, that "dream" was reality in the late 80s.

I was using desktop ARM machines in the late 80s/90s that ran rings around the 80186/80286 processors of the day. One of the early ARM products was actually an accelerator card for x86 PCs - the ARM was that much faster than an x86.

The reason we're not knee-deep in super-powerful ARM desktops today is that between the mid 80s and the early 00s, you could have invented a computer that would run 100 times faster than a PC, brought about world peace, cured male pattern baldness and otherwise met the customer's needs seven ways from Sunday and still not been able to sell it if it didn't run DOS. Heck, the Mac barely survived, and in the late 80s it could do stuff that simply wasn't possible on PCs. If you think that's still the case today then you weren't around then... the web, mobiles, Linux, open source and even the Mac have all taken great gouges out of the Wintel monolith, and most software written today doesn't contain a line of processor-architecture specific code.

The A12X already gives the MBP's i7 a run for its money despite being stuck in a tablet with passive cooling. Amazon have a 64-core ARM chip for cloud computing that delivers more bang-per-buck than Intel (https://www.anandtech.com/show/15578/cloud-clash-amazon-graviton2-arm-against-intel-and-amd/10) - and ARM doesn't have to beat Intel on raw per-core power, as its smaller, lower-power cores leave more space on the chip for more cores, more cache, vector units, GPUs, "Neural engines" etc. (which is why ARM cores are being used in supercomputers: https://www.extremetech.com/computi...d-supercomputer-launched-as-exascale-heats-up)

qemu is emulating x86 on iPad. Not running them natively.

A Respberry Pi 3 can run Windows much faster than qemu on iPad. Because it is running Windows 10 ARM natively.

Using qemu on Windows AMD64 to run ARM Android will get you same slow performance and you can not say Android ARM is faster your desktop.

Dude, I'm a designer, I've tested their iPad version and I laughed at this. It's terrible. Pixelmator and Vectornator can do a better job. Even Affinity can do a better job. Adobe is utterly ridiculous. That is for you, it is not that simple as in "just flip a switch to change the target architecture and its done". No, its not.

Android is another garbage. They can't make a proper OS for the hardware they put on it and thats why they lose to iOS on pure performance.

In Xcode I can just flip a switch to generate a iOS app for x86. The iOS simulator itself is running natively on x86_64.

Same goes for Mac apps. One switch and a few test and maybe fix some stupid pointer problem that haunted your app already for long time you got it working.

I have G29 and do play racing games like project Car though not simulators since G29 isn't a great fit for them. I do not see why they will not port x86 version of the game to ARM. As I said the game is written in C++ not x86 assembly. Throw the game through clang/gcc/msbuild you will get an ARM version at no time.


Windows 10 ARM is not the IoT version. It has full desktop experience and now have native Edge chromium browser.
It even emulate x86 apps.
