I don't think they would remove that option. I see MagSafe as more of a portable/laptop only charging method. Many people are using only one cable with monitors, so I doubt Apple would stop that all of a sudden.

They clearly wound't remove that option. So why would they add an additional charging port? It just doesn't add up. Why making things more complex for no benefit whatsoever? So that they can sell new chargers?

It's superior in terms of "it just pulls away if the cable gets caught". But it doesn't carry data, so it's inferior in terms of "I want fewer cables to connect".
but when I’m plugging my MBP into power, I hardly ever want to get data from my AC power adapter. I don’t see a win there. One more cable doesn’t bother me.p, I’ve been doing it that way for decades.

The MagSafe rumor probably refers to this, hard to imagine new MagSafe charging ports replacing usb-c...

This method of charging is not highly recommended, it will swiftly shorten the MacBook Pro battery life.

MagSafe will be supplementary and offer a faster-charging speed.

Newsflash: there are devices other than AC adapters that will provide power to a laptop.

Newsflash2: you aren't the only user of laptops on the planet.

Magsafe? Why? That would be a significant step back, now that USB-C is the dominant port. Not to mention that MagSafe has been rebranded as an iPhone charger. Maybe a wireless charring option for the Mac? I could see that.

Removal of touchbar, possibly. It was there mainly to differentiate the Mac from other PCs. Now that Apple has their own chips, it's not really necessary. But going back to function keys, sounds extremely backwards. What I see as more likely are the reconfigurable OLED keys...
They aren't mutually exclusive, lots of Windows machines have proprietary/ barrel plug charging and the option to top up with USB C.

This is the big that doesn't quite make sense.

On a laptop: use MagSafe and it will charge faster.
On a phone: use MagSafe and it will charge slower.

Some of us here understand that one is a magnetic connector for a physical wired charging circuit, and the other is an inductive charging coil. Joe Six pack likely does not, and I'd imagine the confusion would be widespread. People latch onto names.

I just got the m1 MacBook Pro. It’s my first time with a Touch Bar and I really like it. It seems to have (most of the time) just what I need when looking for a function.

I really can't imagine Apple will implement redundant charging over MagSafe *and* USB-C. Too little benefit, too much additional cost.
Dell has this even in cheap notebooks, they can be charged with their old-style charger and usb-c too. I would be surprised if Apple lets Dell school them at the third of the price.

How much you wanna Bet?

Touch Bar going away because of Future Touch Screens

I will bet any amount of money that all Mac Laptops including the iMac will be touchscreen.

The Mac Pro will eventually be dropped because of no touch screen.

The future for MacBooks is to resemble the touch Microsoft Surface Pro's in every way.

No More Mac Pro. Not enough people buy them and they wont be converted to TOUCH.
**** touch.

iphone and watch batteries are so small, it's highly unlikely to affect the lifespan of a macbook battery.
could charge only when plugged in is another option.

Nice! I am tempted to offload my machine whilst it still holds value. Will be watching carefully.
Note: Amazingly I just sold my fully loaded 1TB 2016 MBP 15 (Apple having just replaced the KB and display) for 1400Eur, and this was to a no hassle reseller in Germany. A few hundred less than maybe a private sale, but no headache and I think a good price since I just got a M1 MBA that would blow it away for the same price, so a "swap"

As much as a complain about Apple, they do hold their value and for the most part stand behind their products long term (though they're not fessing up to the external display-GPU power issue with the MBP 16 🤬)

I find it disappointing that neither leak mentions built-in 5g. That was one of the main reasons I was waiting for Apple Silicon.

But does it come with a charger in the box? Of course not!

At this point and time I couldn't care less about magsafe. I've got one beefy USb-C brick I use to charge EVERYTHING. I don't want any proprietary garbage no matter how convenient it might be. It doesn't compare to not having to have two extension cords to have enough slots to plug in a different charger for every device or the ability to have a charge port on each side so I can always use whichever is the most convenient for me. I actually purchased two different "magsafe" cables for USB-C. Ended up donating them both as I didn't see need for them and it was getting annoying having to pick out the adapter from the port whenever I needed to use that port for something else.

So thanks, but no thanks. Give me USB-C or give me death.

Oh hell no, that would mean less battery capacity for a retarded feature.

How is that a "retarded" feature? It would be extremely convenient. Half of the time I don't use my Apple Watch is because I can't be bothered to bring a charger with me. If I could top it off with my laptop, that would be incredibly practical.

Can't be charged with a cable?

It takes up space for something only a handful of people needs, I have the same problem with magsafe in iphone too.

Only if you carry a cable around.

It doesn't take any space at all. What are you talking about? It could be incorporated into the existing form factor without any changes. Obviously it's not a wanted feature if it would increase the laptop size, price or sacrifice battery life. But if they can add it in "for free", it would be a really nifty little thing to have.

flat design means lid and bottom to be flat...today the mbp has flat bottom only...so the lid will be flat also...that agrees with Kuo flat iphone 12 design but also marks that says will be similar...since it will not be major design...simillar does not equal identical
Flat lid design (probably close to razer blades laptops) means Apple has now the room for 1080p web come and in the future place for faceID tech

They would probably need to slightly increase the lid thickness to accommodate miniLED backlights. FaceID is still way off IMO (sensors need too much space), but a 1080p camera could be a possibility.

Apple can add their own, faster power delivery spec for faster charging through MagSafe.

Consumers will be still be able to charge via USB-C but MagSafe will be even faster. And of course, MagSafe accessory profits.

Gurman always copies Kuo’s info after these major announcements. Take a close look at a current MacBook. The bottom is far from being flat. The 14” and 16” will be major redesigns.

I have never once wished I had faster power delivery on charging a laptop, but thats just me and really like the simplicity of the current machines. An additional port for charging is just painful to me and the ability to currently charge on either side is something I really enjoy.
