I so miss the faux wood of yore.
Though I guess we'll be making fun of "glossy" in 10 years too.
My first and only CED player was the RCA SJT-400. Lasted for over a decade and we had scores of CED media, most of which held up pretty well.
Seriously, you guys think a BluRay drive will be in excess of $1000 optional? NewEgg has internal drives starting at $200 for readers and $400 for writers. I'll admit that these are probably not the brands that Apple would sell, but still, $1,000 seems too steep.
What do you think Apple will call these drives?
SuperDrive = DVD/CD writer
??? = BluRay/DVD/CD writer
Considering HD DVD is a much more reliable format those who don't need the latest and greatest might be able to build a pretty nice HD library for pennies on the dollar. The only issue would be finding a player if yours broke down in the future since I assume player manufacturing will probably end later this year unless Toshiba feels there is enough of a market to continue building one as a replacement model with minimal engineering expense. Exactly how many years would the HD DVD discs last if properly cared for? Anyone know?
very true about getting a decent amount of titles for cheap. I WANT THE BOURNE TRILOGY!!!
I would imagine this would also be the case for players, prices are already coming down A LOT!!! I am not sure how it will affect combo players....at first I thought they would drop in price too, but they might be a hot commodity for the hd-dvd enthusiasts. I don't think many people besides hd-dvd owners have a reason to buy a combo anymore though, so prices should come down as format war dwindles.
i assume the hd-dvd discs would last long enough, but im more familiar with the blu-ray discs so ill let someone else answer that
Well seeing where they are going with prices on the players (now with an msrp of $149 on the A3 and likely a sale price under $100 and the 1080p model for $199) it appears that Toshiba is basically trying to sell them as an alternative to a upconvert only DVD player. I own the A3 and it is a solid well built player, probably a lot better then what you are going to find for $49.95.
I am sure I will be in the market by next year at this time for a Blu-ray player and I would love to see an a dual format player for under $400 so HD DVD people have a way to transistion to Blu-ray. It would also ensure that discs are not just wasted and thrown out because throwing away a disc with a 1080p movie on it would be stupid no matter the format. Anyhow, it might just be cheaper for me to have 2 players, but I will see by next year.
I know you are a big Blu-ray supporter and I have became neutral (in mind for now) after the Warner announcement, but you might have to get one and experiment with it if the hardware and movies get cheap enough. I think you might see that those of us who bought HD DVD were not crazy. It works very well, however with the Warner announcement HD DVD owners have to at least add a Blu-ray player or they will be left out.
