You automatically assume a low price tag means better value, which in some cases it might be true but in many it's NOT. in the case of your hd-dvd player, for example, you spent nearly $200...for christmas I bought my parents a ps3 for $299 ($100 off at sonystyle.com) which is a 1080p blu-ray player, internet browser with hispeed wi-fi, 40 GB harddrive, photos, music, chat, and oh yeah a video game console (thats not any value to you right? :p ) absolutely none of the features I just listed are included with your player, which will be obsolete in a matter of months. Besides being able to play an obsolete format, there is nothing your player can do that the ps3 can not.

it only takes a slight bit of common sense to recognize that in the long term, and sadly the short term as well, you got less value for your dollar.

I did not ask you to do this, nor did sony, FYI.

Well, seeing you cannot make wise decisions for yourself and that you are talking out of your ass, I do not value your "feeling" that we will never see cheap blu-ray players. Players are already sub $300, and with competetion from many different manufactures (sony, samsung, pioneer, LG, marantz, panasonic, phillips, ect compared to only toshiba in the hd-dud camp) the prices will surely come down. I am not kidding myself, there is a lot of internal competition you obviously know nothing about. The ps2 had slow sales during its first year as well, and many analysts predict the ps3 to soon outpace the xbox360 and over the next 5-10 years the Wii. the wii is a fine system for some, but the ps3 offers a more complex and in depth gaming experience, which for me provides hours of interesting and visually stimulating expereinces.
Curious, what analyst are predicting the PS3 to come back and win the console war? Also could you point me to a <$400 BD 1.1 player that supports Harmony remote oob?

Something a HD DVD player can do that the PS3 cannot: play HD DVD's. :p

Xbox 360 has about 17 million sales to date with a one year lead vs (I'm guesstimating here based on last quarter and analyst projections) about 9 million sales to date. PS3 seems to have become a hot item.
The Wii is a hot item. According to VGchartz the PS3 is behnid the 360 everywhere but Japan. Both are behind the Wii, though...

Really? That's cool.

Well, cool if you own blu-ray players and movies... Not so sure it's good for the HD-DVD crowd.

I'm glad to see Microsoft lose this one though. I don't want to rehash the flame war in this thread but I do agree that blu ray is a superior format. It ultimately comes down to capacity, and blu-ray has a higher current and theoretical capacity than HD-DVD can achieve.

I can't fault Dreamworks and Paramount for taking a 150 million dollar bribe to go HD-DVD exclusive for 18 months though. They'll just get to sell everything on blu ray in 18 months anyway and be 150 million richer for it.

When do you expect a quad core iMac?

The rest of the post is fluff.
Based on current Penryn roadmaps and schedules I would expect the iMac refresh to occur in early 2H08. However, CES starts on Sunday and PC makers will be hawking all kinds of Penryn based wares. This may push demand which will, in turn, drive Intel to release the chips earlier.

I've been waiting for news like this because I would want Blu-Ray to gain popularity before I buy :)

I think lots of people were in the same boat as you. To me, it was pretty obvious. The PS3 alone is going to account to anywhere between 10,000,000 and 20,000,000 players, blu ray had the highest capacity, and it was backed by Sony and Disney. Tough to overcome.

As petty as it might sound, and I know I'm just a pawn of the big media, I'm happy to be on the winning team here. :D

I just thought I'd be the first to let you all know that CNBC just announced that Warner Brothers will only be supporting Blu-Ray going forward. They will no longer support both formats.

As a blu-ray owner, this makes me happy. Also, this thread encouraged me to buy three more blu-ray movies yesterday. :p

Waaaah?

(runs home to hug the Betamax and HD DVD XB360 Drive...)

About time

Hopefully this will put things in motion and this very silly format war (along with even more silly forum fighting) can come to an end.

Not unexpected, but too bad. Their hybrid Blu-Ray/DVD-HD releases were a nice way to not only appeal to owners of both formats, but to also help get their content into more hands, driving sales.

Not really. Marginalizing both formats gives neither Bluray nor HD-DVD any shot at surpassing DVD -- not even close.

With one unified format, and the HDTV push, HiDef discs now -- finally -- have a chance.

2 Niche formats do not equal more sales than 1 Mainstream format.

With Warner Bros. jumping on board the Blue-Ray wagon the war will be over by the end of 2008 and Blue-Ray will have won.

with this news I can see an option for a Blue-Ray drive in the new Mac Pros.

Umm, there aren't 10 million PS3's let alone 20 million.

Very true. I bought Blu-Ray for the same reasons I bought Beta (to record - still had VHS for movies) and LaserDisc - it was the technically superior product. Last time I bought on price was RCA's CED (it was much cheaper then laser), but when it failed, I moved to laser so I'd have been better off just paying the premium up front.

Hence the "is going" part of oban14's post, implying the future. :)

Not really unexpected, as they were actually hinting at it for weeks now. Unexpected was more a phrase that could have been applied to Paramount and Dreamworks HD DVD move a few months back.

Ah... Well maybe now Apple will actually put BD in the new Macs.

Not unexpected was what I meant to say, as I had also heard the same.

While I know they didn't do it solely on the basis of the $150 million in financial incentives they received from the HD-DVD consortium, it no doubt helped... ;)

I am sure Sony hopes they sell more than 20 million PS3's (in it's lifetime) seeing as though Wii is already knocking on the door to 20 million.

They'll get there, but I don't think they'll ever outsell the Wii. Wii could hit 50-60 million units, I'd say the PS3 tops out around 25-30 million or so.

Yes you probably make more money then I do, however I live in a small South Dakota town and rent a pretty nice little house for $225 a month so I probably save a little over you on cost of living. Anyhow, I only own a couple HD DVD's that are Combo disks, but I just was stating it is nice to be able to take a disk over to a friends house or play it in a laptop or portable player. Like I have already said, I am much more of a renter then a buyer.

I have said all along if Blu-ray wins and decent stand-alone players come out for a good price I will buy it. I plan to spend this year watching HD DVD's (mostly rented through Netflix) and then I will see where the war is in 2009 and the pricing of the stand alone players. As far as being welcomed with open arms...I think most Blu-ray supporters will tell us to get lost and ridicule us jumping up and down saying...haha I was right! I guess I'll will see if you are different then the rest. As far as being able to surf the web with the PS3my Wii does the same although with an iMac in the same room it is a pretty pointless feature for me. I guess it is kind of fun for watching a YouTube video on my TV anyhow.

I have read the message boards over at bluray.com and I have never seen such a display of hatred for people who think different. Blu-ray is like a religion. I honestly think some would get violent towards people who have a different feeling towards HD media.

Why do you think that I have no idea how to make wise decisions? I had to make decisions during my year in Iraq that kept people alive so I know how to make wise decisions. You are taking one decision I made and trying to apply it to my entire life.

well abercrombie boy, i guess I need to open my arms because as of may 2008 warner brothers is exclusive blu ray. im saying I told you so because I did, and you need to hear it and take it like a man.

I was refering to your decisions regarding blu-ray/hd-dvd related products, and face it....you made a bad one. you were roped into it by firesales and FUD, as so many others were, but the writing was on the wall for many like myself. and don't hate blu-ray.com, they just know the superiority of the format and are proud of it. you need to realize that not everyone getting into HD is looking for a bargain, they are looking for quality. warner brothers knows it, apple knows, I've known it :D and I do not understand why you haven't figured it out.

I suggest you get on blu-ray.com when you are ready to join the future and ask questions....they have some of the most helpful and firendly people on the internet, but please do not come on and bicker about hd-dvd. its dead to me, as it should be to you.

Curious, what analyst are predicting the PS3 to come back and win the console war? Also could you point me to a <$400 BD 1.1 player that supports Harmony remote oob?

dude.....thats why I said..."besides playing an obsolete format" ----read more carefully :D

the wii is cool, i agree....but aimed for a different crowd. search for the analyst yourself, because with this announcement I am confident the ps3 has a longer shelf life than the wii and we will see what happens in 5-10 years. have you played bowling for ps3? its virtually identical minus the controller being a little goofy. and of course it looks much much much better :D

Remarkable how quiet all the HD-DVD supporters have gotten all of a sudden!

yes, indeed. madoka where are you? are you just waiting for me to post something you can clip up to make me look like I contradicted myself? when I said the format war is over, i said it because I thought warner was coming over and knew apple was. even when you take me out of context I'm still right, funny how that worked out.

shouldn't misqouting be against the rules or something?

I don't understand how someone could be so adamant of their position, boasting their greatness in choosing one format over the other. IMO, this format war will not end until the technology gets passed over. Sony can boast all they want, selling 100 to 1 five years from now, but the truth is that Blu Ray nor HD-DVD will ever catch on like the DVD format did. That said, i'll now go back and watch bourne kick some ass on my roommate's shiny new HD-DVD player :D

It was amusing to read the pompous asshat (*cough* monkeytap) vs. intelligent people posts tho :p
