don't get me wrong or anything, i would love to see the burnable bluray drive inside of the MBP as BTO, but for the price and lack of speed in the drive it would hardly be worth it. for just a 2x burnable drive, (probably not even RW capable) you are looking at $700 at least, from apple anyway, we all know what they are like. that drive would take way to long.

according to wiki...

if you are burning a full 50gb DL bluray disc, that is going to take around 5hours to burn. unless you are fine leaving it on overnight, there wont be much time in the day to just let it go. for backup purposes only wouldnt it be much easier (and cheaper) to have a nice big external HD to backup to while you are away on trips etcetc?

i donno thats just how im thinking..

When I say backup purposes, I mean should the desktop Blu-Ray writer die, and I really need to burn off some material. Don't forget though that not everyone wants or needs to fill a full Blu-Ray disc. Each to their own though :)

yes thats true, but for $20 a BluRay disc (at least!) i for one wouldnt be wasting my money on the discs....

bluray support as in it will be able to play them in a program such as "DVD Player" (except with a different name).

I'd rather see a new version of FairMount that would decrypt and de-HDCP the disc, then we'd be ready to go since both Plex and XBMC can already play Blu-Ray video disc files. But I doubt they'll produce one since BD encryption is disc-dependent (unlike DVD encryption) and would require updates for new discs.

I tried this 'Plex' program. It isn't nearly as fantastic as you are boosting it to be. It struggles at best, the interface is almost unusable while playing high bitrate content, and it can't even handle BDMV folders. Granted, it's doing better than anything else out there at the mo, but we need support built in to the OS.

Not sure what you're playing or doing, but it works perfectly fine on my 2 gHz Mini so long as I don't have anything else running. No dropped frames at all. Most of those files are in the 30 mbps bit rate range.

and it can't even handle BDMV folders.

It's getting there. Just not a priority for the devs since there's no official support for BD on OS X.

No argument from me.

so funny, you guys would prefer a way to pirate Blu-Ray discs. instead of making sure that macs can even read them and playback movies to begin with.

piracy is evil, whether stealing music to doing this on movies.

i just want proper blu-ray devices, support and more for the new macs.

I haven't pirated anything. You should be more careful about your accusations.

Is this a sentence?

Perhaps you should send an email to steve@apple.com to see if you can arrange that.

Mac Mini Prediction for 2009

I would like to predict that the Mac Mini is announced with Blu-Ray in January 2009.

It just makes sense because this holiday season, many blu-ray players will be sold. The mini is aimed at the HTPC niche, so it is going to need blu-ray and I would guess sooner than later.

When I installed Toast it asked me if I'd like bluray support. Whats all that about? I declined, as I don't have bluray discs or a drive (and I seem to do fine with mkv files for my hidef content) but does Toast bd support work at all?

Yes, but Apple doesn't care about Blu-ray. Optical media is dead to Apple. Digital copies of movies are all they care about. If Apple DOES add Blu-ray support, it will just be for OS X native data disk burning.

Yes... it does... you can burn data BD-R/RE disks with Toast. OS X recognizes Blu-ray disks natively, but it can't burn them. Toast adds that.

The only thing Apple needed to add was HDCP-compliant hardware. Now that that's done (and presumably with future Macs), a third-party can release Blu-ray playback software, since all they would need to do is arrange for decryption with the studios. If the market is there, it will happen.

*sigh*

You can already burn HD video to DVD and Blu-ray disks in OS X!

The only thing that you cannot do is burn or watch disks that use HDCP. That's IT!

My wife expressed that she didn't want *her* DVDs to be Blu-ray, even though we're getting a Blu-ray drive for Christmas. That's because she watches movies on her iMac. (She wonders if the Blu-ray disks have the Disney games she likes).

One thing that bothers me about the iMac design. Why can't we plug in laptop computers into the beautiful monitor? If they go that direction, they could also consider a HDMI plug (or two - one input and one output).

It could be. But Apple does care about hobbyists. When someone makes a Blu-ray movie from his high def camera and Apple software - he wants to be able to play it at his computer.

The Mac isn't the best gaming machine (Apple doesn't seem to value games), but it is the best hobbyist machine as long as it continues to offer the best software that hobbyists want.

Leopard CAN burn Blu-ray discs natively. As can Toast and ArchiveMac. Blu-ray burners are pretty cheap too. I have an LG from NewEgg for ~$240 including 2 discs. Media is still pricey.

blu-ray

To be honest i think blu-ray is no diffrent than hd only that it plays on diffrent systems.
and is more money might i add.
why didn't sony just add hd to there ps3 then we could just have god old hd :apple::)

i think you are forgetting the difference between formats and encoding, and the way the discs are burnt, and the size of the lazer... etcetc blaa blaa

Blu-ray and Backwards Comp. As Well!

Hopefully there will be cross-over drives for blue-ray for the mac by that time. Backwards comp. Make the drive play everything!

currently, most Blu-Ray drives you buy can also burn CD and DVD media.
The LG blu-ray burner that I have, that I'm very happy with will also burn CD and DVD+-R/RW and will also read HD. So you have everything thats useful in a single drive.

i think i know the drive you are talking about!! i was going to get the rents to get that for me for christmas, but computer parts arent really that chrismassy.. ill buy it at a later date haha. its only $140AUS

I only buy movies on Blu-Ray. I have a 52" HDTV and after seeing movies on Blu, you won't be able to go back to DVD. The great thing is that the most Blu Ray movies comes with Digital Copies for iTunes. Best of the both world. HD movies at home, and digital version on the go. (iPhone) :D

i agree!!! BluRay is amazing.

are you serious?!?!?!?!?! you get a digital copy??? oh wow i am so jealous, here is aust we get the plain old BluRay movie, nothing more.

I buy tonnes of cheap dvds for my shelves while my morals stretch enough to give me a free 1080p rip to watch on the telly.

Obviously this is a joke post, 'stealing' off incompetent scumbags and watching films how you want is not allowed.
