Seems quite late for that. I know people who wake up at 4 AM on a regular basis. I think the earliest I've ever needed to be up was 2 AM to catch a flight. Seems somewhere between 2 and 4 would work better for that purpose.
Dude, it was a joke....

"Apple says users should try to keep Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on for the best experience on an iOS device".

In an area with wifi networks that you cannot join, the phone will continue trying to join ad infinitum. Seems to prevent downloading emails via cellular on my phone. Once I completely disable wifi, I get a bolus of emails.

Incorrect. Default behavior is for the phone to show a list of available networks. It won't try joining them unless you've already joined said network before.

Turn off show available networks (should be off by default anyway). Then if you've joined a network that you no longer have access to, remove it from your list or turn off auto join. Problem solved.

If you have a crappy wifi network/connection, turn it off and use cellular. I have to do this at work sometime when I am in the parking lot because it's right on the edge of cellular/wifi.

Yes, but it also depends on how you write to them. If a tester just trashes a feature saying it's "crap" and Apple is going down the toilet.. I don't think they'll pay attention. However, if you give examples of how things in your opinion should work for a specific feature they do take it under-advisement. It's all in the lingo and how well you put things. I wasn't in favor of the way this particular "feature" was placed into IOS 11. I gave 8 examples of how it could be changed to work well for everyone. Their responses were all the same.. the way it currently is suits the original intended function... the end.. So that is why I hope the general public sends emails and posts on their message boards to let them know how they dislike the current way it works... not just for this but for anything to do with any of their OS.
You know...I wonder if feedback on their website for the general public to use are even useful.

Sounds like Apple wants to hear what they want to hear and not paying attention to detail issues.

Ouch, glad i didn't update yesterday reason? pretty much because an earthquake had just hit my city and area, mexico city.

I like this thinking!

The Control Center toggles quickly take you off a bothersome network while still making the features of those radios available to apps -- Google Timeline, AirDrop, August Smart Lock, Watch etc. If you want the radios completely off, just dive into Settings. Easy!

At least Microsoft doesn't tell me how I should really be using wireless technologies on my surface Pro.

I'm a user of Apple and Microsoft products and I have to say I'm increasingly dissatisfied by the software experience on apples devices, while increasingly happier about the experience on windows.

And Aunt Betty won't know that... Apple will keep getting her location data, using her battery etc. And people keep thinking they not being monitored on iOS.

I'll give you that one, it's really hard to know for sure. Beta testing gives you a direct line to their software crew. They'll answer questions with real replies. Their website may or may not have real comments back, just automated. Still, I would assume if enough trigger words hit their systems about issues someone would look at them.

WOW this is completely unacceptable. Apple is presenting controls to disable (turn on / off) WiFi & Bluetooth yet NOT actually disabling those services in the background when selected?!? This HIGHLY misleading and in some instances dangerous for users. On/Off should be On/Off with no deceptive grey area in between! WTF Apple!?!?

So if I turn off WiFi or Bluetooth in Control Center then it's not actually off. If I turn off WiFi or Bluetooth in Settings then it is off. So the old meme actually applies here - You're turning it off wrong.

And clearly the 5 am thing came from the song "Five o'clock somewhere" they just didn't realize that meant PM.

They've got it the wrong way round - you should have to elect within settings to exempt wifi and Bluetooth shut-off from the specific cases of the function of the control center switch.

You’re right. This is another example of today’s Apple not adhering to their own practices consistently or minding the details.

Right... So an earthquake devastates your city and your on the internet telling us that your lucky you didn't update to IOS11 because the bluetooth button doesn't do what you want it to. Think about that for a minute.

I don't know why they have to make things more and more awkward to use with every update. Theres a lot of people jumping over to android anyway without pushing them

i probably remember at least 10 times of when i forgot to re-enable wifi so my phone kept using LTE data for a few days

my brother works in the IT security area and he always leaves wifi off. if it’s something permanent then doing it in settings might make sense

i welcome the change.

An important question that Apple needs to answer if they are going to defend this feature is what is the real-world power usage difference between "wifi/bt module on but disconnected" vs. "wifi/bt module off"? From past experience turning the modules off to save battery it feels like a significant difference.

Either way, I'd be willing to bet money that the capitulate on this and change it back. There's probably a stubborn product manager pushing for this that everyone internally is annoyed with. Public sentiment will win out.

Yep... Love how people keep talking about Microsoft, but starting today my iPads will start downloading this update and I will have no way to prevent it regardless if I intend to update now or not. I just need to keep deleting it from my storage

Yeah clown electricity has just return and need a little break now go and enjoy your stupid phone.

Geez some people are just plain heartless...

If you had to get a flight at 2am why didn't you just stay up? I don't think I've been bed earlier than 2am for about 2 years.

Most people get up between 6am - 7am. Most night owls go to sleep between 2 and 4am. So 5am is pretty much the sweet spot. Of course there are random exceptions, but 5am i the bit where there's hardly anyone on the road, too late for night owls, too early for early risers.

I find this to be a good thing. I have on multiple occasions had to disable WiFi due to poor coverage, or ISP outage or whatnot and how often do I remember to turn it back on again when I should? Pretty much never.

And unless you have a lot of really ****** open WiFi's in your known WiFi list there is really no reason to have WiFi deactivated. Why would you have it deactivated? Even if you mostly never use WiFi, having it enabled doesn't make a dent in your battery life and it will save you data usage and you actually save battery life by using WiFi over LTE.

Same goes for bluetooth. Why should it ever be disabled? It doesn't affect battery life unless you are actually connected and constantly transmitting data over bluetooth and if that is the case, then you wouldn't want to disable it regardless because there is a reason why are connected in the first place? If you don't have any active bluetooth devices it doesn't make any difference whether it's activated or not. All it does is to ensure some features many people didn't know had anything to do with bluetooth will actually work.

For those very few "advanced users" out there who feel like they have legitimate reasons for fully deactivating WiFi and/or bluetooth will be fully capable of doing into settings and doing so if needed.

actually i just realized this change is great.

turn off WiFi in Control Panel and you disconnect from any currently connected network.
AND it won't try to automatically connect any previously joined network either.

but its still able to provide SERVICES connections.

turn back on WiFi in Control Panel and it will automatically connect to a the previously joined network.

still not 100% sure however if phrases like "Connect Only on WiFi" or "Download only on WiFi" would download or not download however.
