Well that makes it easy. No BMW for me. Next they'll start charging for every time you use a turn signal. Then again, you'd think they already do that if some of the drivers are any indication... :/
Edit:
Not to mention their math is wrong: Pay $300 once. Or, "Over the course of a 3 or 4 year lease, it would still work out to less money than the option is now." Let's see:
4 year lease, minus 1st year free = 3 years.
3 years * $80/year = $320.
Is $320 less than $300? No. (Of course the time value of money isn't counted).

Toyota and Lexus are making so their navigation is a subscription too, $80 a year. I think it’s $120 to update the maps (and you don’t have to do it), but I wouldn’t do that since just navigation is horrible.Android Auto and Car Play should be standard in every vehicle, but then if they do that, the car manufacturers can no longer get the $200 or so every year to update the maps in the car.

I AM in the market that BMW is aiming for. For me, to pay for something that other folks give away for free can influence my decision. But it wont be the only thing that makes the determination. Here is a partial list of brands offering carplay: "Apple's list of CarPlay-enabled vehicles includes over a hundred 2016 and 2017 models from 21 auto manufacturers, including Audi, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Citroën, DS Automobiles, Ferrari, Ford, GMC, Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Opel, Porsche, Peugeot, Seat, Škoda, Suzuki, Volkswagen and Volvo." And am pretty sure more are coming.
There are plenty of brands there that compete directly with BMW that could get my money. All else being equal, the fact BMW wants me to pay for something I can get for free somewhere else may just be enough to sway my decision, on principle if nothing else.
What a stupid idea. We got a Ford Flex in March of 2016 (I had to upgrade the bus with a new USB controller, but that wasn't hard) and a Mercedes GLS-450 in Nov 2016 - many cars were eliminated due to a lack of CarPlay. I did test drive the slightly smaller BMW SUV. It was a nice enough car, but didn't compare to the GLS. (And the salesman drove like an idiot before I got to drive.)
If it was a subscription CarPlay though, it would have been enough to say "Sorry, BMW."

And we have had the last cars 6-7 years or 100k miles, whichever came first.
Idi.
This is great. I always do 3 year leases on my BMW's, I just paid $300 up front for carplay on my wife's X3.... under this new method I will only pay $160 for 2 years if you include the first year free. Alot fairer for leasers.... Buyers might get screwed over though.
because you want a BMW, you don't want a ford fiesta. that's why. the person in the market to buy an 80,000 car doesn't give a **** about 300 dollars upcharge, or an 80/year fee. it doesn't matter what chevy does, because i, as a well-to-do person wanting a luxury vehicle for whatever reason (class, amenities, looks, whatever it is, doesn't matter) don't care about a chevy. I care about a BMW, and that's the price of admission.All the car manufacturers that charges for CarPlay charge the onetime fee. Why do I have to pay for another annual charge fee on top of the connected car subscription that I am already paying for.
The only reason I see them do this so you can’t negotiate the price of CarPlay into the price of the car.
3x80=240

How about a 230i Or a 320i that stars at $34,800? You think a person wants to buy an entry level BMW wants to pay all of that too? So people get those because it’s a BMW and not $80,000.because you want a BMW, you don't want a ford fiesta. that's why. the person in the market to buy an 80,000 car doesn't give a **** about 300 dollars upcharge, or an 80/year fee. it doesn't matter what chevy does, because i, as a well-to-do person wanting a luxury vehicle for whatever reason (class, amenities, looks, whatever it is, doesn't matter) don't care about a chevy. Crazy idea: BMW should start an incentive program to pay back 1 cent for each turn signal blink
