Well that makes it easy. No BMW for me. Next they'll start charging for every time you use a turn signal. Then again, you'd think they already do that if some of the drivers are any indication... :/

All the car manufacturers that charges for CarPlay charge the onetime fee. Why do I have to pay for another annual charge fee on top of the connected car subscription that I am already paying for.

The only reason I see them do this so you can’t negotiate the price of CarPlay into the price of the car.

Edit:
Not to mention their math is wrong: Pay $300 once. Or, "Over the course of a 3 or 4 year lease, it would still work out to less money than the option is now." Let's see:

4 year lease, minus 1st year free = 3 years.
3 years * $80/year = $320.

Is $320 less than $300? No. (Of course the time value of money isn't counted).

3x80=240

Man, you beat me to the punchline in your own original post, lol.

Android Auto and Car Play should be standard in every vehicle, but then if they do that, the car manufacturers can no longer get the $200 or so every year to update the maps in the car.

Isn't that the truth?

Toyota and Lexus are making so their navigation is a subscription too, $80 a year. I think it’s $120 to update the maps (and you don’t have to do it), but I wouldn’t do that since just navigation is horrible.

What absolute ******** is this? Why would this be a subcription? Guess that's BMW off my list of cars to buy, shame as my current one is rather nice.

Happy to pay a one of fee (even although that's really BS) but if they think I'm subscribing then they can think again.

it might seen better for those who lease, but this **** is ridiculous. They know most people go for whatever cheaper new BMW is in the lot, but by already including it and make it a service, they give themselves the chance of selling their customer another service they wouldnt otherwise have gotten it when they signed the deal.

I got rid of my bimmer and got me a Durango and couldnt have been happier, the "GPS or Screen" was already capable of Carplay and Android Auto, all included for $FREE, even on their entry model.

no. their market is not "someone that might buy a car" it is "someone that is looking for a luxury vehicle priced between $60k and $80k" not a ****ing chevy volt. you are not the target market. if you care about a 300 dollar charge, or an 80 dollar subscription enough that it will dissuade you from purchasing an $80k car, you are not their target market. I don't need a run down of other, completely incomparable vehicles that include carplay. because that's not the point. you are missing the point.

so you're saying a 300 dollar upcharge changes your price range for a new vehicle from it's current range of $15,000 to $100,000? are you walking in to a dealer prepared to pay either 15,000, or 100,000 for a car? or realistically, your range is somewhere in the realm of 15-20k, OR 60-80k, OR 80-150k? because your range is absolutely not 15k-150k. you either are a working class person that needs a reliable vehicle for 15-20, you're a somewhat well-to-do person that is looking for a luxury brand like bmw or mercedes, or you're wealthy and looking at 100k+. someone that has the money and is in the market for a 100k+ car is not going to also consider a ****ing chevy volt because it's got carplay for free, just like someone that is in the market for a 15k honda is not also going to be in the market for a 150k bently. the price and taste range is simply too vast.

you're being completely unreasonable.

I AM in the market that BMW is aiming for. For me, to pay for something that other folks give away for free can influence my decision. But it wont be the only thing that makes the determination. Here is a partial list of brands offering carplay: "Apple's list of CarPlay-enabled vehicles includes over a hundred 2016 and 2017 models from 21 auto manufacturers, including Audi, Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Citroën, DS Automobiles, Ferrari, Ford, GMC, Honda, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Opel, Porsche, Peugeot, Seat, Škoda, Suzuki, Volkswagen and Volvo." And am pretty sure more are coming.
There are plenty of brands there that compete directly with BMW that could get my money. All else being equal, the fact BMW wants me to pay for something I can get for free somewhere else may just be enough to sway my decision, on principle if nothing else.

Why the hostility? Is it because BMW is charging a subscription fee, or because Apple is not getting a 30 percent cut? If Apple got a 30 percent cut, would people start saying it's ok?

My, how times have changed. In the past when someone argues about Mac vs. PC prices, the response would be "Mac is like BMW while PC is like Ford..." Now BMW is the bad guy that nickels and dimes their customers.

What a stupid idea. We got a Ford Flex in March of 2016 (I had to upgrade the bus with a new USB controller, but that wasn't hard) and a Mercedes GLS-450 in Nov 2016 - many cars were eliminated due to a lack of CarPlay. I did test drive the slightly smaller BMW SUV. It was a nice enough car, but didn't compare to the GLS. (And the salesman drove like an idiot before I got to drive.)

If it was a subscription CarPlay though, it would have been enough to say "Sorry, BMW."

And we have had the last cars 6-7 years or 100k miles, whichever came first.

Idi.

3 * $80 is $240. Now 4 * $80 is = $320

Some people who purchase cars, do so without getting the fully loaded infotainment system with nav, sat radio etc. They just get base and CarPlay. BMW is clearly trying to circumvent that. Also currently all new Porche's come with CarPlay as well, I have seen several video reviews where they have stated to get the base model without upgraded infotainment system and use CarPlay. In the end this is all about BMW wanting to recoup some loss money for people who use CarPlay and not purchase expensive infotainment packages.

This is great. I always do 3 year leases on my BMW's, I just paid $300 up front for carplay on my wife's X3.... under this new method I will only pay $160 for 2 years if you include the first year free. Alot fairer for leasers.... Buyers might get screwed over though.

Shouldn't that $300 investment up-front result in around $100 extra in the buyback value after four years, more after just three? That is how premium additions have always worked in leases. The value of the option is amortized across the expected life of the car (with an up-front depreciation curve). Given that the BMW is going to last for a lot longer than three years, the $300 up-front investment is a far better approach than resigning it to a subscription.

If you are right, and the $300 up-front is just "lost", then I hope BMW isn't selling their previously-leased cars with CarPlay for any more than their similar previously-leased cars without it. And if that is what they are doing, you would be far better off privately selling that vehicle in three years instead of signing onto a lease, and getting a good chunk of your $300 investment back in the sale.

An $80 subscription is only better than $300 up-front (assuming favorable financing) if the feature's useful life is less than 4 years (5 years given the first year is "free" [for now]). I would expect CarPlay to still be a useful selling feature on a vehicle five years from now, so the $300 up front is a better bargain.

Ha ha ha.

Buy a plain cheap Ford vehicle as they come with sync 3 and that has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for free.

They even have a free Waze update any day now.

because you want a BMW, you don't want a ford fiesta. that's why. the person in the market to buy an 80,000 car doesn't give a **** about 300 dollars upcharge, or an 80/year fee. it doesn't matter what chevy does, because i, as a well-to-do person wanting a luxury vehicle for whatever reason (class, amenities, looks, whatever it is, doesn't matter) don't care about a chevy. I care about a BMW, and that's the price of admission.

Don't we see the same same arguments used by the Mac owners on this site to explain why they buy Mac vs. PC? Or to justify the price of the iMac Pro? So it's a bit odd to see these people now complaining about BMW.

How about a 230i Or a 320i that stars at $34,800? You think a person wants to buy an entry level BMW wants to pay all of that too? So people get those because it’s a BMW and not $80,000.

Really funny to see people respond with madness for a subscription model with a moderate value. Like Apple CarPlay is that great, I have paid for it and am VERY underwhelmed and wish I had the possibility for a subscription

Trust me, in its current shape CarPlay can not even stand in the shadow of the basic functionality of the BMW standard entertainment center. And that is developed by a car company... fill in further for the great achievement of Apple ...

Crazy idea: BMW should start an incentive program to pay back 1 cent for each turn signal blink

Why are people so upset about this? I mean, there is not much to gain for BMW (or other car brands) when an external device steals al their possibilities for upselling by offering an alienied user experience, Apple should be thankful BMW wants to integrate CarPlay instead the other way around! In a few years, the automobile industry will tremendously change and current car brands could be degraded to be the Foxconn of the industry, that is run by companies like Google, Apple and other ICT companies. That perspective is not appealing to me, keeping focus and control on the user interface is now of tremendous importance and worth fighting a battle for...

There is nothing to gain with companies seeking for world domination by harvesting car-interface possibilities, go BMW !
