I can't understand why a change in hardware providers requires a software update to enable CarPlay.

And I find CarPlay wireless to drain too much battery.
From others it looks like a hardware upgrade is necessary first, then it will come as an OTA update. It is weirdly stated as it can't be a software only update if its a chip shortage typically, unless they are figuring out they don't need certain hardware but need to update the software to get around the missing hardware.

Is that a joke? Their stuff is HORRIBLE. Even before CarPlay was a thing I’d use my phone for nav over that built-in garbage (that they charge you hundreds of dollars for updated maps).
I use BMW's navigation all the time and also find it pretty good and well thought out, the 3d view, the convenience of the iDrive dial as a zoom tool, the detailed pop up with lane assist when near an intersection, the traffic integration, using the BMW App to send car destinations.
I don't buy maps, a few years old map works nicely, roads don't change that often. Last year I did buy an update because they did a great Black Friday and I do own and keep my cars for some time and the map was getting a bit old. It's also nice to have a year of traffic data. I probably won't pay for it again, next year back to Waze for traffic sensitive journeys. I do prefer the built in iDrive Nav but I won't accept a subscription out of it.

My understanding is the hardware is all there and the car just needs a software update for the hardware to work. It sounds like for example Intel chips were no longer available so BMW switched to Arm chips, so now we need to wait for the OS update that can run on Arm chips. Made up example, but you get the idea.

To me, CarPlay is as basic as A/C. I don't even use the radio anymore (obsolete). Glad it was possible to install it in a car from 2009 before CarPlay even existed and it is lightyears ahead of the navigation that shipped with the car.

To me, this sounds like this is a situation that BMW doesn’t really have control over for that specific market with the chip shortage. It’s not like it’s BMW’s choice if that they don’t want to offer CarPlay/android auto, it’s more or less; they’re working directly with the situation that’s at hand. I mean, they’re hoping to rectify the issue by switching to a new chip supplier. I don’t fault BMW for this. But…. I do think it’s something that will thwart their sales for those who want the technological convenience of CarPlay/android auto.

By the end of June at the latest.

Oh darn, look. Coffee all over my monitor as I laughed excessively.

No one seems to keep deadlines anymore. Everything is blamed on the pandemic, or shipping issues, or supply chain.

No one ever comes out and says "We don't know when it will work, but we screwed up and will do our best to fix it."....

If it needs a chip now to work how is an over the air update going to work? And, will it be as reliable.

Maybe they are waiting on apple to make it compatible with whatever bootleg chip they settled on.

VW is shipping some cars without rear sensors due to chip shortages. They do give a $450 credit and it’s on the sticker, but lack ofrear cross traffic alert sucks considering how nobody stopsfor backup lights anymore.

"It's more important to ship the car than it is to wait for QA to finish testing CarPlay and AA."

That sounds like a surprisingly modern decision by a carmaker.

You think this is bad, for years customers have been paying $12,000 (originally was $6,000) for full self-driving from Tesla and it still hasn't been delivered years later. How there's been no action against them by the SEC is beyond me. 🤣🤣

Yeah, VW Nav works the same and I prefer it over carplay except I don’t pay fortraffic alerts so the routing is “dumb.” But Carplay Maps uses way more cellular data than it should so it costs me to use it.

All of the "underpaid" bureaucrats at the SEC are waiting for it for their Teslas. They don't want to delay it anymore by getting involved.

BMW is temporarily shipping new cars without Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality due to the automaker changing its chip supplier (via Automotive News Europe).

The new chips built into many BMWs manufactured this year require updated software to be able to run Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. BMW customers who receive a new car without CarPlay are being asked by dealerships to wait for an over-the-air update that will enable the functionality "by the end of June at the latest."

It is not clear how many BMW models are affected, but a large number of customers in the U.S., Italy, Spain, the UK, and France have posted online about their new vehicles being delivered without CarPlay. Affected models include the code "6P1" in their specification.

While some BMW owners will have to miss out on CarPlay functionality for a temporary period, BMW is switching chip suppliers to strengthen its supply chain in the long term amid the continued impact of the global chip shortage, which could reduce component shortages in the second half of the year.

BMW offers one of the most integrated experiences with Apple's ecosystem, with support for Digital Key, Ultra Wideband Digital Key Plus, and a feature-rich dual-screen wireless CarPlay experience. BMW only started offering CarPlay in 2016 and came under fire for charging a $80 per year fee for access to it, before reneging on the subscription following negative feedback.

Just got my new X1 4 days ago, and it came WITH wireless CarPlay & digital key.

I had ordered it since February, though...

I agree. I feel bad for the car salesmen people. Because they have to inform the customers that the vehicle comes with no CarPlay or it does not have a chip. It makes it so difficult for them to sell the car.

In at least a few reported cases, the dealership never informed customers until after a car was purchased...

I own a BMW motorcycle (BMW R 1250 GS). It doesn't support CarPlay at all (unlike Honda AfricaTwin) but a stupid system that forces you to use the bad BMW navigator for smartphone.
