I'm kinda glad I got my X5m when I did. I was able to order the exact car that I wanted with no options deleted. I'm glad I'm not in the market for a new car now.
The thing that annoys me is BMW haven’t even been in touch. I was given a delivery date of April. Now it’s July. No BMW i3’s have shipped with the current head unit since March. So I can leave my order on and hope something changes (doubtful) or find a nearly new one that matches the specification I ordered.

Am I missing something? How would an ota update add Carplay if there's chip shortage? Wouldn't that mean a chip is needed to provide this function need to be physically soldered or plugged into the cars infotainment system?

They had to change the chip supplier (making the previous software unable to work).

The cars have a new chip, which supports CP and AA when the software comes around. Which it will, with an OTA.

The chip is there, but just a different chip than they used before. So a software update is required so CarPlay works with the new chip design.

Unfortuaily for the consumers, it's a a sellers market so either you take it or walkaway. Have you looked outside of your home state?

For me because I was ordering an M model each dealer only gets a certain amount of allocations per month/year. I just happened to be at the right time and place when was looking.

Certain things I could see being ok on. Certain things are non negotiable for me especially since I own and not lease. If I lease I wouldn't care "as much" as in a 2 years or so I'd get a new car. But since I own and plan to keep the car, I want it with my specs. If I'm spending a nice chunk of money on a luxury care the few hundred dollars "credit" doesn't mean much to the bottom line. I was reading if you order the massaging seats its only the driver and not the passenger side since they have a passenger lumber delete it won't work and the credit is only like $300...

You know what is worse? When a car company releases something and says it is complete. I bought the 2019 Acura RDX and the infotainment system was a complete disaster. It took them multiple years and the threat of a class action lawsuit to get it mostly straightened out. It still is unreliable and I'm considering never buying another Acura again because of it.

It's better for a brand to omit the feature then to release a disastrous one or they may lose loyal customers to their brand.

This article is about Apple Car Play, but it also mentioned no Android Auto either, which is what I'd be using. Quite a bummer! I hope the OTA updates come soon, and will be relatively painless to get through

I have a BMW with CarPlay and I never use CarPlay. The BMW's own navigation and software are superior to anything that CarPlay can offer.
Curious, did your car come with a CD player? Mine didn't and I hear many others these days don't. While I get that we're in "new times" where they want to make the console less cluttered, make way for bigger screens, etc., I still have plenty of CDs on hand. I do have Sirius XM, and use music from internet, but I do go through areas at times where I don't have internet access.

Oh, as for navigation, some of the manufacturers (e.g. Honda) have long gotten rid of navigation on their vehicles. They just given up since especially these days, everybody has a phone that can do GPS navigation :D

A lot of people seem to really appreciate using Apple Maps or Google Maps in place of their car’s default navigation display, and CarPlay/Android Auto allows your car’s in-car entertainment setup to control audio playback settings on your phone (so media control buttons on your steering wheel [a feature of some cars, especially luxury cars] can control music playback on your phone). Those are two advantages to CarPlay that immediately come to mind without having used it. (Besides, since BMW makes CarPlay compatible cars in Europe, I’m pretty sure that means they have manual transmission cars with CarPlay. Manual transmission and fancy tech toys are hardly incompatible. Edit: If I may firmly plant my tongue in cheek [and engage in some self deprecation] your truck’s chief anti-theft device is that it’s 22 years old! It’s okay, I was driving a 2003 until it gave up the ghost [and before I could afford a new car, I ended up moving to a place where cars are expensive and public transportation decent enough where I don’t need one for now, but I do miss driving for fun])
Buy an Apple Watch. Set iPhone in console. To Apple Watch, directions to ? All done, Apple Watch will tap you on needed turns, iPhone connected to audio will say out loud. No need whatsoever for Apple CarPlay to use maps. Use it all the time, no CarPlay.

Well, that is annoying. It’s 2022, why would anyone want to buy a vehicle without CarPlay.

Also, what's the guarantee that it will be available to the customers by end of June?
Totally agree with you.

Amazing to me when people downvote having CarPlay. Guess - they have no clue how great of a system it is, especially if using it wirelessly like on a BMW. It is all about choice and people should be able to choose if they want CarPlay in their car or not and the others that don’t like can move on. :)

Well I’m not in the States, but I’m looking all over the U.K. That was how I found out about the change of head unit. I was asking other BMW dealerships to send me details of cars they had in stock and found out the standard speck had changed.
There are some features I could live without, but Apple CarPlay and a reversing camera are two of the things I won’t budge on.
That’s why I’m looking at nearly new stock now. If you choose to buy a new car (also not a leaser), you should get what you ordered.

VW is shipping some cars without rear sensors due to chip shortages. They do give a $450 credit and it’s on the sticker, but lack ofrear cross traffic alert sucks considering how nobody stopsfor backup lights anymore.

My pickup has the rear cross traffic, lane change, backup and front parking sensors. This is the first vehicle I've had with this package.

It's all ready paid for itself with things I haven't backed into, people who haven't hit me coming out of my driveway, and cars I haven't side swiped on the highway. It's worth every penny it added to the cost of the vehicle, and I won't buy another without it.

That’s the way car technology works though isn’t it? Once you get a car with a feature you’ve not had, it’s something you’ll never buy a car without it again.

As you note, my truck is 22 years old and my car is 24 years old. A bit of humor I tell people is that not only are my vehicles old enough to drive, they are old enough to drink! I've been in cars with the onboard maps. It is a nice convenience but since I have the same capability by using my phone, I haven't seen a need to buy a new vehicle. The hard part for me is that my stereo isn't new enough to have bluetooth so I have to use a bluetooth to radio converter which is ok in the remote areas but doesn't work well in urban areas. I have considered updating the radio but that doesn't seem worth it as I can get by with what I have. Just turn off the radio in urban areas and turn up the volume on my phone plus I get the turn indications on my watch.

I don't dismiss people who want the latest and greatest, I just don't see a big cost benefit to me. I haven't had a car payment in over twenty years and my insurance costs are low. Major repairs when needed are less than two or three months car payments. I had to do one on the car in each of the last two years and will have one to do on the truck this year. That works for me but I know I'm a bit on the odd side of things.

Yeah, VW Nav works the same and I prefer it over carplay except I don’t pay fortraffic alerts so the routing is “dumb.” But Carplay Maps uses way more cellular data than it should so it costs me to use it.
I'm not sure that you're using the same VW nav system that I am in my 2021.5 Atlas. Mine's pretty rudimentary, doesn't support real-time feedback and POIs, and the UI is not at all intuitive. That's why I use Waze instead. My wife insisted on getting Acura (Honda) nav in her MDX, found out how lacking (and ugly) it was, and also switched back to Waze.

Exactly what I do.

No need to be so dramatic, it's not missing forever, it'll come as a OTA update.
I've received my letter that invites me to the dealer for the first on-site software upgrade. It brings, among other things, WiFi hostpot. Once that's done, the OTA can happen and my dealer also said delivered in June at the latest.

It's been impacting most Europeans BMW orders (at least) since at around December 2021 (yours truly impacted). But for a few months of waiting, and coming from a car without CarPlay anyway, that definitely didn't change my purchase decision.
The only hardware-related thing that's missing altogether in most new BMWs as well is the wireless phone charging tray. And that, I regret not having. But again, not to the point of cancelling a vehicle purchase. Still got 4 wheels and an engine...
Did you order the car with CarPlay? I didn’t, as the dealer said it’s an over the air update anyway, and we can do it later, just for me to find out that I can’t do it now. I got the info that I won’t be able to at all, but I cannot see what hardware needs to be in place, which I haven’t got anyway. Let’s see whether by June I can update.

but it is annoying that it still costs €300.- to get a free software.

Just got my new X1 4 days ago, and it came WITH wireless CarPlay & digital key.

I had ordered it since February, though...
I really want to get a BMW simply because of this Apple integration! Bye bye Model 3! Hello i4!

CarPlay is moot at this point, Tesla doesn’t have it either. CarKey is what I’m excited about, but hope that they sort out the CarPlay situation soon!
